Comprehensive Analysis of Multilevel Inverters: Topologies, Control Strategies, and Modulation Techniques

The capability of multilevel inverters (MLI) to handle high power within medium voltage settings is one of the reasons why they are gaining popularity in today's market. This research was carried out with the intention of providing a comparison of all possible topologies, modulation methods, and control systems. As a result of the high levels of total harmonic distortion (THD) produced by conventional modulating methods, the primary emphasis of this article is on determining which combination of approaches is optimal for each and every MLI application. Phase shifting (PS) carrier-based pulse width modulation, phase disposition (PD) carrier-based pulse width modulation, phase opposition disposition (POD) carrier-based pulse width modulation, and alternate phase opposition disposition (APOD) carrier-based pulse width modulation are the presented techniques that are evaluated via the lens of total harmonic distortion (THD), which is described and compared. When compared to the other methods, the inverter that utilizes COPWM demonstrates superior performance in terms of obtaining a higher fundamental RMS output voltage.
