A review on the progress, challenges and prospects in the modeling, simulation, control and diagnosis of thermodynamic systems

Thermodynamic systems play an inestimable role in engineering applications. With the rising demands for information and automation in operation and maintenance in thermodynamic systems, the essential technologies of operation management have been quickly advancing in recent years. It is challenging to direct engineers to choose a focused strategy to accomplish effective matching between the rich monitoring information, experiential knowledge, and practical applications given the variety of thermodynamic technologies now available and suggested for distinct functional requirements. The limited adaptability of field applications is further hampered by the low compatibility between the current technologies and engineering backgrounds. The detailed technical advancements and drawbacks of managing thermodynamic systems using dynamic modeling, performance simulation, system control, fault detection, and isolation were summarized in this paper. There is a thorough comparison and analysis of the traits and adaptability of various technologies, a thorough discussion of the technical shortcomings impeding engineering applications, and some fresh suggestions for future advancement. These studies primarily focus on the use of advanced dynamic modeling techniques, effective performance simulation approaches, precise operating control schemes, and sophisticated defect detection algorithms to increase the reliability, automation, and informationalization of engineering decision-making. It supports the information development of knowledge-intensive thermodynamic systems toward human-computer intelligent interaction by providing scientific basis, improvement direction, and unique additions to contemporary research for engineers and researchers. Additionally, it offers certain focused strategies for effectively resolving technical issues.
