摘要
Interest in human dimensions/social science (HD/SS) is running high among wildlife managers. Our 50-year experience with HD/SS integration in wildlife management indicates that HD/SS capacity development requires continuous pursuit of five objectives: (1) demonstrate value of HD/SS to wildlife managers and stakeholders; (2) expand types of social science contributions to management; (3) improve integration of HD/SS in management; (4) build strong relationships between HD/SS specialists and wildlife managers; and (5) support evolution of public wildlife management. Challenges and remedies associated with each objective are identified. We believe these objectives are important for HD/SS capacity development in wildlife management regardless of the specific model of expertise procurement used by a wildlife management agency. Our opinions are based primarily on long-term experience in the U.S.; with appropriate consideration of different sociocultural and political contexts, these ideas should be applicable more widely.
