Development of Solar-powered EV Charging Station With Energy Management System

This paper explains design and development of solar based electric vehicle (EV) charging station (EVCS) using the reachability concept sliding mode controller (RCSMC). The proposed system is modular and environmentally friendly. The system optimization is accomplished by an energy management system (EMS). It is required to utilize solar PV power as much as possible. The EMS strategy of SPEV system is designed in such a way that the EV is charged efficiently either by the PV or by the distribution grid. An improved EMS is designed for automatically manage the power distribution for charging the EV battery, supply to load of home appliances and rest to grid. The availability of power in different modes of operations, such as PV-EV, PV-Grid, Grid- EV and EVGrid and for smooth conduction, the proposed system employs several power electronics converters. The DC-DC boost converter with incremental conductance (INC) based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller and DC-DC bidirectional converter with RCSMC controller for battery charging and discharging. An improved energy management system (EMS) is designed for automatically manage the power distribution for charging the EV battery, supply to load of home appliances and rest to grid. It is verified through the result of MATLAB/Simulink.
