Web-Based Application for Rehabilitation of Fine Motor Skills

Abstract
People rely on their fine motor skills to do key everyday life tasks. There are a lot of causes that can affect these skills, making detailed movements of the hand difficult to perform. A commonly used tool in upper limb rehabilitation is the Box and Block Test (BBT). This functional test measures the manual dexterity of patients, serving both as an assessment tool and a rehabilitation exercise. However, the test can be characterized as time consuming and clinic dependent since it requires special equipment and the presence of a physician.In this paper we present our web-based approach to the traditional BBT. Our application is an innovative tool that can be used at any place, any time, by anyone who has access to a mid-range PC connected to the internet and a webcam. Our proposed solution integrates all the guidelines and procedures of the original BBT, offering a digital environment that recognizes the user’s hand poses and moves. It imitates the real world’s test, providing appropriate feedback, allowing users to keep track of their performance.
