Rain Rate and Water Vapor Density Measurement based on Millimeter-wave Backhaul Links

With the frequent occurrence of global extreme weather and the deepening of the public demand for weather forecasting, the development of near-surface, wide coverage, high spatial and temporal resolution atmospheric environmental information monitoring means has become more and more important research direction. In this study, an inversion method for rainfall and water vapor based on millimeter-wave backhaul link attenuation parameters is presented based on the rapidly developing cellular network system around the world, and the model performance is verified based on a pair of full-duplex E-band backhaul links (73.5 GHz and 83.5 GHz) measured for about 4 months. The results show that the atmospheric environmental information monitoring method based on E-band backhaul link can obtain accurate rain rate and accumulation in real time, and can be used for long-term effective monitoring of water vapor density near the surface. In the future, with the continuous increase of the frequency of microwave link transmitted by cellular network, it will greatly promote its application in the detection of pollutants, dew, fog and other atmospheric environment information.
