The Job as Work Role and Profession

Abstract The new world of work is dynamic, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, making it increasingly less possible to precisely describe, prescribe, and directly manage work and workers. The reality of the modern work world is that workers must use their discretion as they carry out their new and expanded roles and responsibilities. To make this new work role effective, companies must focus on more than upskilling workers. They do this by actively creating a climate for professionalism commensurate with the new professional work role. This chapter details the human resources (HR) practices necessary to create the climate necessary for modern organizations to be effective in this new world of work.
