Size-based Separation of E. Coli using Viscoelastic Microfluidics

Here, we achieve the separation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) clusters from its singlets using a viscoelastic microfluidic device. In this work, 1- and 4.8-μm polystyrene particles are used to mimic E. coli singlets and clusters. Results show that 4.8- and 1-μm particles are arranged close to the channel centerline and sidewalls, respectively. Also, separation of E. coli singlets and clusters is demonstrated. Considering the significant role of E. coli clusters in biology and the importance of biofilms in nature, this microfluidic platform hopes to be extended for various applications across a range of scientific fields.
