Introduction: Risk management in emergency services in remote or rural areas is vital for ensuring safety and effective care. These settings present complex challenges that demand well-planned, efficient, and swift approaches. Remote locations are defined here as geographically isolated places, with limited, difficult or slow access to services, infrastructures and/or communications. The perception of risk by healthcare professionals in these areas is crucial for informed decision-making and improved service management. This work presents the first study of existing scientific evidence concerning healthcare professionals' perceptions of risks in remote emergency settings. Methods: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with a previously published protocol, using the Scopus, PubMed, LILACS, Cochrane, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases. The review followed the Population, Concept, and Context framework, focusing on healthcare professionals (population), risk perception (concept), and emergency care in remote settings (context). Studies published in English or Portuguese were considered, with no restrictions on publication date. Eligible study designs included observational, quantitative studies, qualitative studies, and systematic reviews. Data extraction and validation were performed independently by two reviewers. Results: Based on the inclusion criteria, 26 articles were selected for analysis. The review focused on study objectives, methodological approaches, key hazards examined, primary risk perceptions reported by emergency healthcare professionals in remote settings, perceived challenges, and identified coping strategies. Conclusion: The analysis revealed that studies predominantly focus on individual risks or fragmented understandings of hazards. Risk assessments are typically based on ad-hoc methods, with an emphasis on clinical judgment and decision-making processes. None of the reviewed articles approached risk assessment using a consequence-probability framework as recommended by internationally accepted standards.
Objective:The objective of this scoping review is to systematically organize and analyze the existing rehabilitation programs and exercises for inpatients, particularly older adults, with proximal hip fragility fractures, focusing on the characteristics and methods of exercise programs.Introduction:Hip fractures are a leading cause of disability and long-term care needs among older adults, with rising incidence due to aging. Early and effective rehabilitation is essential, yet existing research often focuses on single interventions or specific aspects of rehabilitation. For inpatients who are 65 years or older, a comprehensive analysis of rehabilitation programs and exercise interventions is needed, in line with the FITT-VP framework and incorporating multidisciplinary involvement.Eligibility criteria:This scoping review will include studies involving inpatients aged 65 years or older who have undergone surgical treatment for a single proximal hip fragility fracture and received inpatient rehabilitation in the same hospital. Studies must describe rehabilitation programs or exercise interventions. Methods:This review will follow the JBI methodology for scoping reviews. The databases to be searched will include PubMed, CINAHL Ultimate (EBSCOhost), Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane Library, Scopus, JBI EBP Database (Ovid), PEDro, and Epistemonikos, and fragility fracture-related websites. The search will be conducted from January 2015 to February 2025, with no language or country restrictions. Two independent reviewers will screen and extract data, with disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. Data will be charted and presented using the FITT-VP framework, with results in tabular and narrative format to highlight characteristics and trends.Review registration:OSF https://osf.io/cysng/overview
The systematic assessment of empathy is essential for identifying psychologists' competencies and developmental needs, ultimately contributing to more effective clinical practice. Given the multidimensional nature of empathy, comprehensive evaluation requires consideration of its cognitive, affective, and behavioural dimensions. However, no existing instrument is specifically validated to assess psychologists' self-perceived empathy in clinical contexts. To address this limitation, the present pilot study aimed to develop and undertake a preliminarily validation of the Portuguese Psychologists' Empathy Scale (PPES), a self-report instrument designed to assess empathy among psychologists working in Portuguese-speaking contexts across these three components. The study proceeded in two phases: item construction and initial psychometric testing. A total of 106 Portuguese psychologists completed a 57-item Likert-type instrument. Bartlett's test of sphericity was significant (χ2(45) = 811.56, p < .001), and the KMO index (0.73) indicated moderate adequacy for factor analysis. Exploratory factor analysis revealed three core factors explaining 48% of the total variance, with strong internal consistency. A subsequent confirmatory factor analysis supported model refinement, leading to the removal of items with low factor loadings. The final PPES comprises 43 items distributed across cognitive (16), affective (16), and behavioural (11) dimensions. The findings provide encouraging preliminary evidence for the PPES, demonstrating robust internal consistency and acceptable initial factorial validity. Nevertheless, further studies using independent samples and external validation procedures are required to fully establish its psychometric soundness and clinical applicability with Portuguese-speaking psychologists.
