This paper provides a succinct outline of the findings from the 2023 excavations conducted at Kuldor-tepa in Urgut, Samarkand region. The excavations, focused on the south-western suburban area of the site, have revealed a complex that is reminiscent of Sogdian variations of Zoroastrian sanctuaries found in Central Asia. The complex includes a cella with two stairs in the innermost area, connected to a larger hall with smaller side chambers. This arrangement resembles the layout of the temples of Panjikent and appears to support the hypothesis of its function as a temple. Kuldor-tepa is situated approximately 25 km south-east of Samarkand. The original name of the site remains uncertain, with arguments suggesting it may be the remnants of Boxide ((sic)(sic)T), mentioned in Chinese historical sources as the capital castle or town of Mi (f ), or Maymurgh principality, one of the major yet little-known Sogdian city-states.
This study reassesses the five Greek gospel leaves preserved in Vienna as P. Vindob. G 2324 (Gregory-Aland Lectionary 1043), long regarded as one of the earliest extant lectionaries. Through codicological and paleographic analysis, this article argues that the fragments in question did not originate as an independent lectionary, but rather formed part of the Sahidic Gospel codex sa 131 from the White Monastery in Upper Egypt. The scribe who copied the Coptic text also added selected Greek gospel passages at the end of the manuscript. The same scribal hand can further be identified in a companion Sahidic codex of Acts and Catholic Epistles. The codicological reconstruction of the original manuscript sheds new light on the relationship between Greek and Coptic in seventh-century Christian Egypt.
This article examines an overlooked Bohairic parchment codex of the Gospel of John from the White Monastery in Upper Egypt, dating to the 9th–10th century CE . Oddly enough, this manuscript was copied in an oblong, horizontal format characteristic of contemporary Abbasid Qurʾāns. By codicologically reconstructing its fragments and analyzing its script, illuminations, and textual divisions, the study situates this codex within the broader history of Coptic book culture. The article argues that the adoption of the oblong format reflects Christian engagement with Islamic manuscript aesthetics in Northern Egypt, where such interactions were more pronounced than in the south. It highlights the role of book design as a medium of interreligious contact and cultural negotiation in early Islamic Egypt.
