Hampshire Constabulary is the territorial police force responsible for policing the counties of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in South East England, United Kingdom.The force area includes Southampton, the largest city in South East England, and the naval city of Portsmouth. It also covers the New Forest National Park, sections of the South Downs National Park, large towns such as Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Andover, Fareham and Aldershot, and the historic city of Winchester. The constabulary, as it is currently constituted, dates from 1967, but modern policing in Hampshire can be traced back to 1832.In late 2015, the force moved its strategic headquarters to Eastleigh, into a building now shared with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. At the same time, the force moved its Operational Headquarters to Mottisfont Court in Winchester. The Support & Training Headquarters and control room are located in Netley, near Southampton, in buildings of the former Netley Hospital.
The study sought to explore the levels of stress management among teachers in public schools within a district of a second-class municipality in Southern Negros during the school year 2022–2023. Stress management was examined in three areas: self-care and well-being, supportive relationships, and professional development. It also aimed to determine differences in teachers’ stress management when grouped according to age, sex, civil status, plantilla position, and average monthly family income. Employing a descriptive-comparative design, the study used survey questionnaires and applied the Mann-Whitney U test for statistical analysis. Findings revealed that teachers effectively counterbalance the effects of stress, exhibiting strong coping abilities and a positive outlook in sustaining health and well-being across all domains. The highest ratings were observed in maintaining supportive relationships, while the lowest were in engaging in personal hobbies outside of work—suggesting that teachers have limited time for recreation. When compared across demographic variables, significant differences were found only in civil status under professional development, where married teachers reported higher levels of stress management than their single counterparts. The study concludes that teachers successfully manage stress through mindfulness, social support, and professional growth. However, more emphasis should be placed on work-life balance, individualized professional development, and structured team-building activities. It is recommended that schools implement comprehensive wellness and professional development programs that holistically address teachers’ physical, emotional, and professional needs to enhance both teacher well-being and instructional effectiveness.
Background When considering the policing environment of 2022, many roles previously in the domain of warranted officers (police officer) are now performed by nonwarranted police staff equivalents. These police staff roles have expanded rapidly into other areas such as investigations, custody, and contact management, which were traditionally seen as police officer functions and put staff under some of the same stresses as police officers. A UK police force requested help in investigating technologies that could be used to improve health and well-being for both officers and staff. Objective The aim of this study was to create a health and well-being app for police officers and staff, which considered the unique requirements of the users throughout the designing, building, prototyping, and testing stages. Methods This study involved quantitative approaches (demographic web-based survey questions and the System Usability Scale) and qualitative approaches (open web-based survey questions and semistructured interviews). Unsupervised usability testing of a prototype app was undertaken by members (N=48) of the commissioning client using their smartphones. After completing a preregistration application for screening purposes, participants downloaded a trial version of the app. Then, they completed a web-based questionnaire after testing the app for 10 days. A subsample of participants (9/48, 19%) was interviewed. Deductive thematic analysis was undertaken to identify key themes and subthemes. Results Data collected during usability testing concerned the 6 domains of the app—food and diet, activity, fluid intake, sleep, good mental health, and financial well-being—and informed the creation of improved design during prototyping. Some usability and design issues and suggestions for improvements were also addressed and implemented—including shift management and catch-up cards—during this cycle of development. Conclusions This study highlights the importance of coparticipation with officers and staff across the entire development cycle, to coproduce a human-centered design methodology to enable the development of a considered and user-centered solution. It demonstrates the need for producing a multifunctional tool rather than focusing purely on an individual element for this user group. It also highlights how linking and being able to track optional, personalized elements of health data against one another, cross-referenced to individual shift patterns, might help to inform and provide users with a chance for reflection and therefore influence behavior change.
Participants will learn how Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is important if police culture is to change. The facilitators will share their experiences from both a national and agency perspective on the development and delivery of strategies and action plans that can lead to real change.Participants will then be encouraged to share their own lived experiences and discuss how an EDI approach could be considered within their own working environment.
Participants were introduced to the concept of Gender Responsive Policing and why it is important within police organisations but also for their external service delivery. They also learnt why the Civil Nuclear Constabulary became the first police service in the UK to develop a Gender Responsive Policing Strategy, why it was needed and what difference is it making?
Because of the lockdown conditions imposed in the United Kingdom to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus, police services responded to the risk of increased domestic abuse and intimate partner violence in a variety of ways. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a multi-agency pilot program put in place to increase the engagement in both the criminal investigation and safeguarding actions of the police and other agencies for victims of intimate partner violence. In this program, independent domestic violence advocates and independent sexual violence advocates work side by side in a police patrol capacity, conducting joint incident response to reports of domestic abuse in an effort to provide enhanced, immediate victim support. The early findings indicate significant overall increases in engagement with criminal prosecutions. The level of engagement of repeat victims in respect of safeguarding and criminal investigations also greatly increased. In addition, individual offences of controlling and coercive behaviour, harassment, threats to kill, affray and malicious communications showed significant rises in engagement. The findings indicate that improved victim support at an earlier stage improves the likelihood of agencies protecting, preventing and reducing cases affecting victims of intimate partner violence. Areas of further research include victim and practitioner perspectives and a more comprehensive data analysis to evaluate if these early findings remain at greater volumes and over time.
