How can cinema actively participate in the disputes over memory? Focusing on the short film Dreams of a Revolution (2023), directed by Pedro Neves, we propose to think about cinema and, more specifically, documentary, as a vehicle for (counter)discourses about reality. Through the novels The Tuner of Silences (2022) by Mia Couto and O Museu da Revolu & ccedil;& atilde;o (2021) by Jo & atilde;o Paulo Borges Coelho, Pedro Neves questions the weight of Portuguese colonialism in the present, highlighting the role of filmic language in this process. From the discussion on the categorization of documentary as a genre, this article illuminates the complexity of this exercise in light of the relationship between cinema and the idea of truth. Finally, the analysis of Dreams of a Revolution re-updates this discussion, highlighting the role of cinema (more specifically, of documentary) in the critical interpellation of collective memory.
Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to protect crops from animal pests, diseases, and weeds, helping to maintain yields under diverse production conditions. However, their widespread and repeated use has led to environmental contamination, biodiversity loss, and growing concerns about human health. While integrated pest management and organic farming have sought to reduce pesticide dependency, both approaches still permit pesticide use, and their adoption remains limited due to technical and economic constraints. In this context, we explore the feasibility of a third way: pesticide-free agriculture based on agroecological crop protection principles. Drawing from the Rés0Pest experimental network launched in France in 2012, we present 10 years of results from nine sites covering a range of pedo-climatic conditions and socioeconomic contexts. Rés0Pest implemented cropping systems that excluded all pesticide use, including seed treatments, while maintaining synthetic fertilizer inputs. The systems were codesigned through participatory methods, following a system experiment approach that evaluates the effects of a combination of cropping practices and their interactions on cropping system performance over the long term. Results showed that in pesticide-free systems, it is possible to achieve yields comparable with conventional and higher than organic systems and, in some cases, generate higher net farm income. Pest and pathogen crop damage did not significantly increase over time, although weed management remained a key challenge. These findings suggest that technically and economically viable pesticide-free arable systems are possible under certain conditions and that new solutions are needed to support their adoption across a wider range of contexts. We discuss implications for research, farming, and policy and emphasize the need for adaptive experimentation and systemic performance assessment to support agroecological transitions.
Farmers are confronted with the issue of mycotoxin contamination of cereals, regardless of the type of farming they practise. People who are aware of the presence of mycotoxins in food often associate organic farming with a higher risk of contamination. Legitimate questions are also being asked about the sanitary quality of cereal products marketed through short distribution channels, which are rarely inspected. However, there is a lack of specific, usable data on the risk of mycotoxins appearing, to assess the specific features of the organic farming cereal system among farmers growing, storing and-processing on farms involved in producer-to-consumer food chains. The data acquired as part of the Myco3C project provide answers on the sensitivity of these production systems, raise farmers' awareness of the mycotoxin issue, and offer them recommendations, thus providing consumers with better guarantees on mycotoxin contamination levels.
