Siliguri College, also known as city college, was established in the year 1950. It is the oldest college in Siliguri situated in the Indian state of West Bengal. It offers undergraduate courses in arts and sciences and also offers PG courses in Bengali and geography. The campus is in Darjeeling district. It is affiliated and accredited to University of North Bengal.
The "queen of vegetables" broccoli, is grown worldwide in a wide array of cultivars. Broccoli grows well in West Bengal's Terai region and helps a higher income for the farmers. This study tested eleven broccoli cultivars under three Polyethylene glycol induced osmotic stress settings (-0.4, -0.8, and -1.2 MPa) and a control set to determine the best. GREEN MAGIC had the lowest Mean Germination Time and Reduction of Germination values at -0.8 and -1.2 MPa, respectively, indicating faster germination and higher seed viability than other cultivars. Moreover, GREEN MAGIC has lowest shoot and root phytotoxicity. Further, GREEN MAGIC had the highest Root Length Stress Tolerance Index, Plant Height Stress Tolerance Index, and Shoot Height Stress Tolerance Index values, proving its resilience under stress. GREEN MAGIC was the sole cultivar that by and large, outperformed others under osmotic stress conditions for various morphological features and indices. Thus, the morphological comparison of this experiment clearly indicates that GREEN MAGIC is the cultivar that is most resistant to osmotic stress conditions and should be preferred among the eleven common cultivars.
The health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of married women in rural areas is influenced by a range of socio-economic and health factors. This study aims to assess the HRQoL among married women residing in the rural areas of Koch Bihar district, West Bengal. A total of 569 married women were selected using a simple random sampling method from 58 villages across all 12 blocks of the district. Data were collected through a structured interview schedule designed to capture information on various dimensions of HRQoL. The findings reveal that rural married women face multiple challenges that impact their physical, psychological, social and environmental well-being. The study highlights significant variations in HRQoL scores based on age, education, economic status and access to health care services. The results emphasize the need for targeted interventions to address the specific needs of rural women, particularly in improving access to health care, education and economic opportunities. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers and public health professionals aiming to enhance the overall well-being of women in rural settings.
River channel centerline migration indicates the lateral movement of a river's central path across its floodplain over time in an alluvial river system situated in tectonically active areas, such as the Sub-Himalayan foothill region, resulting in many socioeconomic and environmental problems. This study analyses Channel Centerline Migration (CCM) resulting from bank erosion and accretion along the River Torsa in the Koch Bihar Sadar subdivision between 1973 and 2022 using RS and GIS. We examined four distinct periods (1973-1992, 1992-2001, 2001-2013, 2013-2022) to assess channel centerline migration patterns, rate of bank erosion and accretion, morphological characteristics (sinuosity index), and rates of width variations using Landsat MS, TM, and OLI-TRIS data. Results indicate gradual increase in channel width, channel stability and reduce channel meandering along stretch over time. The average erosion and accretion rates were found 74.72 ha/year and 72.13 ha/year along both banks. These results are significant for the prediction of channel migration rates in the context of engineering, planning, and soil-water management.
The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) was a temporal phenomenon of intense turmoil in international financial markets and banking systems, spanning from mid-2007 to early 2009. The crisis was sparked by the collapse of the U.S. housing bubble and the massive failure of subprime mortgage loans. Due to the extensive interconnections of the global financial system, it rapidly spread beyond the United States, resulting in a worldwide economic meltdown that had lasting impacts on economies, employment, and financial regulations. In this background, this paper presents a theoretical framework to study the significant role of foreign direct investment and export in limiting the impact of global financial crisis. The study further reinforces its theoretical findings through comprehensive empirical investigation of the crisis-impacted economies. The theoretical model is based on Cobb-Douglas function with market capitalization of listed domestic companies as dependent variable and foreign direct investment and competition-augmented export as independent variables. The findings of the study strongly determine the positive influence of FDI and export on financial crisis. However, the theoretical framework in the present paper also helps in determining the critical values of FDI and export at which global financial crisis is minimized. The paper thus provides directions for reviving the economies from the grips of financial distress by adopting FDI and export driven policies.
