The Counter is a high-end casual dining restaurant chain in the United States, Mexico, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, and Japan offering custom-topped gourmet burgers with over a million possible burger and burgers-in-a-bowl combinations through a checklist-style menu.
Easy access to resources is a primary concern for researchers and libraries. Maintaining user privacy is also important. This session presents three services that navigate issues around access and privacy. Counting Online Usage of NeTworked Electronic Resources (COUNTER) has determined methods to provide data while upholding user privacy. SeamlessAccess streamlines the discovery process for users. GetFTR helps users determine which articles in their search results are accessible. Although these services are very different, they all aim to protect user privacy while providing the best user experience possible. Please note this article is a record of the recorded presentation.
ABSTRACT COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of NeTworked Electronic Resources) Release 5 has brought many improvements to reporting usage of e-resources. This session covered the three main developments which are the ability to see both total and unique downloads, the default exclusion of Gold Open Access usage in Standard View reports, and the introduction of the Unique_Title metric for reporting e-book usage. Examples of the manner in which different types of e-journal and e-book usage are reported with the new metrics as well as recommendations for calculating cost per use were also provided. Purpose - Librarians need to measure returns on the investments that they make, and for digital content, the COUNTER Code of Practice for usage statistics is an important metric. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - This paper is a viewpoint. Findings - Release 5 of the Code of Practice has been developed to make it easier for publishers to be compliant. It can be adapted and extended as digital publishing changes over the years. Originality/value - Release 5 consists of four master reports, a reduced number of metrics and additional attributes. These will enable librarians to roll up or drill down through reports with ease, eliminating the need for the kinds of special-purpose reports required previously.
