Background The convergence of biological systems, ecological economics, and computing offers a novel paradigm to mitigate climate anomalies and systemic food insecurity. Traditional neoclassical production functions treat thermodynamic degradation as an exogenous anomaly, trapping smallholders within high-entropy corporate and chemical dependencies. Objective This study operationalizes the Andean-Amazonian Bioeconomy Model by integrating it with deep learning architectures to transcend orthodox economic frameworks, incorporating variables of material entropy, bioculture, bioterritoriality, and bioinformation. Methods A "Bio-Digital Shield" was deployed via three edge-computing mobile applications leveraging Google Earth Engine telemetry (ERA5-Land and SMAP). The framework underwent a cross-sectional empirical validation campaign (\(\:N=200\)) across highly vulnerable territorial clusters spanning the Andean Altiplano in Bolivia and the Mesoamerican Dry Corridor (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico). Results Empirical data demonstrated that the decentralized application of predictive protocols allowed smallholders to successfully substitute more than half of their conventional chemical dependencies (\(\:Inputs\_Replaced>50\%\)) while maintaining a seasonal crop preservation threshold above \(\:60\%\). The Jach'a Qh’anaxx algorithm achieved high cross-cultural precision, peaking at \(\:92.68\%\) accuracy in Bolivia, minimizing cognitive friction with local ancestral observation matrices. This socio-technical integration eliminated persistent rural information asymmetries, translating into substantial household revenue stabilization rates reaching up to \(\:85\%\). Conclusions The hybridization of local biocultural knowledge with localized predictive deep learning frameworks provides a scalable path toward technological sovereignty in the Global South. True resilience is achieved by deploying open-source, territorialized digital assets that empower smallholder communities to manage biological resources autonomously.
Background: Diagnosis and treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are often delayed in Latin America due to barriers at the patient, provider, and health care system levels. Methods: This qualitative study, conducted in 16 countries, explored the experiences and recommendations of persons with SLE and rheumatologists to identify key needs and strategies to improve care. Semistructured interviews and focus groups were analyzed thematically. Results: Six main themes emerged: (1) education and training, (2) access to specialized care, (3) health care system organization, (4) awareness, (5) patient organizations, and (6) research. Participants underscored the need to strengthen professional competencies, decentralize care, reduce administrative barriers, and raise awareness among decision-makers and society. Conclusions: The perspectives of persons with SLE and rheumatologists converge on the urgent need for coordinated, equitable, and patient- and caregiver-centered approaches to SLE care. Implementing these recommendations—through improved education, health care system reform, advocacy, and research—could substantially reduce diagnostic and treatment delays and improve outcomes for people living with SLE in Latin America.
Volcanic crater interiors in Nicaragua’s Pacific region are a valuable, understudied, and threatened native plant resource. Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve encompasses a crater and lake formed following a Quaternary volcanic explosion in Pacific Nicaragua. The flora of the tropical dry forest in the crater’s interior surrounding the lake has not been extensively assessed. We identified 403 native and 72 introduced plant species and their uses through a combination of survey plots, unstructured interviews, expert consultations, and targeted searches for plant species coordinated with key informants in the Reserve. Fabaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Asteraceae were the most represented native species, whereas the most significant numbers of introduced species were found in Poaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Fabaceae. Forty-one species have conservation priority status. Documented uses were found for 70% of the native species and 88% of the introduced species. The most significant numbers of plant species with reported use types were ornamentals and fuelwood. This study constitutes the most comprehensive plant species inventory in a protected area of Nicaragua’s tropical dry forest biome. These findings indicate native plant diversity is high, introduced species pose considerable risks, and most species are integrated into local uses. Consequently, management decisions should explicitly promote native diversity, protect threatened species, better control introduced species, and encourage sustainable use.
