Abstract Background Hopkins syndrome (HS) is a rare neuromuscular disorder characterized by poliomyelitis-like flaccid paralysis occurring in children after an acute asthma attack. This report describes the multimodal neurophysiological and ultrasonographic evaluation of a child presenting with post-asthmatic lower limb weakness and discusses the differential diagnosis of flaccid paralysis in childhood. Case presentation A 2-year-old boy presented with left leg weakness two weeks after an asthma exacerbation; one month after symptom onset, he was unable to walk without assistance. The child’s past medical history was significant only for asthma, and his vaccination schedule, including for poliomyelitis, was up to date. Neurological examination revealed left lower limb weakness with areflexia (absent reflexes) and moderate atrophy. Electroneuromyography and muscle ultrasound indicated a chronic, asymmetric anterior horn cell disease without evidence of acute denervation. Conclusion HS is a rare neuromuscular disorder characterized by poliomyelitis-like paralysis that occurs in children following an acute asthma attack. Given its rarity, the pathophysiology and optimal management strategies for HS remain poorly understood. A multimodal assessment combining ultrasound and neurophysiological studies is valuable for improving the characterization of this phenotype.
Magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with diethylenetriaminepenta(methylene phosphonic acid) and activated with glutaraldehyde were designed as a heterofunctional support for immobilizing Eversa Transform 2.0 lipase. Structural characterization by X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopies, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and vibrating-sample magnetometry confirmed preservation of the magnetite spinel phase, spherical primary nanoparticles of approximately 16 nm, progressive organic coating, and magnetic responsiveness after enzyme loading. Molecular docking suggested that glutaraldehyde can act as an interfacial bridge between accessible lysine residues of the lipase and the phosphonate-functionalized surface, with calculated interaction energies of − 6.0 to − 3.6 kcal mol−1 for lysine-glutaraldehyde contacts and − 5.4 to − 3.2 kcal mol−1 for the phosphonate-glutaraldehyde-lysine complex. A Taguchi L9 design identified protein loading and ionic strength as the most influential immobilization variables, and the optimized condition was 6 h, 5 mM buffer, 5 mg enzyme per g support, and 40 °C.Under these conditions, the immobilized biocatalyst reached 60.5 ± 1.4
Radiology professionals play an essential role in diagnostic imaging services; however, they perform their activities under working conditions characterized by high technical complexity, intense care demands, and exposure to multiple occupational factors. Although studies have investigated specific aspects of this work, knowledge regarding Quality of Work Life (QWL) remains fragmented in the literature. This study aimed to analyze how the scientific literature portrays the factors affecting the QWL of radiology professionals. This is a narrative literature review based on searches conducted in the PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) databases, covering publications from 2021 to 2026. The evidence indicates that QWL is multidimensional and is influenced primarily by work organization. Key associated factors include work intensification, high care demands, insufficient breaks, limited professional recognition, and weaknesses in socioprofessional relationships, which are associated with increased occupational stress, burnout, reduced job satisfaction, intention to leave the profession, and compromised quality of care. It is concluded that interventions targeting work organization and professional recognition are fundamental strategies for promoting QWL and strengthening the sustainability of radiology services.
