Urban expansion in subtropical metropolitan regions intensifies land use/land cover (LULC) transformations and alters land surface temperature (LST) dynamics, directly affecting urban climate resilience and environmental sustainability. This study evaluates historical LULC and LST changes (1995–2017) and predicts future scenarios (2028–2039) in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, using Landsat imagery integrated with a Cellular Automata–Artificial Neural Network (CA-ANN) model implemented in the MOLUSCE platform. LULC maps were generated using supervised Maximum Likelihood Classification. Model validation achieved an overall accuracy of 77.6
Salinity has an important effect on stratification in regions affected by large river freshwater inputs. These places show the establishment of the Barrier Layer, which isolates the mixed layer from a deeper layer. As a result, in areas with high vertical salinity stratification, the pycnocline becomes shallower than the thermocline, affecting plankton distribution. This study aims to assess the influence of the low salinity plume from the Amazon River on upper-ocean stratification over the last 30,000 years. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages from sediment core AMZ-405 were analyzed to reconstruct hydrographic changes in the western tropical Atlantic Ocean during this period. Our findings demonstrate that stratification increased during the Heinrich Stadial 1 event due to a decrease in sea surface salinity, coupled to a simultaneous increase in Amazon River discharge. In addition, the Amazon plume is a source of fertilization in the photic zone, influencing trophic dynamics. The relative abundances of Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Neogloboquadrina incompta, and Globigerinita glutinata have been previously used to infer changes in mixed layer depth through the RN/Gg proxy. However, G. glutinata primarily relies on diatoms as a food source. Consequently, plume-induced diatom blooms alter relative species abundances, indicating that fertilization interferes with the original interpretation proposed for the proxy. Our results highlight the importance of the Amazon plume in regulating planktonic foraminifera assemblages through both stratification changes and fertilization. This role emphasizes the significance of investigating the connection between low salinity and water column stratification in areas where Barrier Layer formation occurs.
The present study aims to analyze the role of multidisciplinary teams in monitoring individuals subjected to electronic monitoring in Brazil. It is justified by the need to assess the effectiveness of this penal measure beyond technological control, considering its impacts on social reintegration. The objective is to examine the role of psychosocial support in the resocializing function of electronic monitoring, grounded in an understanding of its normative construction within the Brazilian criminal legal system. The hypothetical-deductive method is adopted, drawing on bibliographic review as well as documentary and statistical analysis. The results indicate that the work of multidisciplinary teams constitutes a fundamental element in mitigating vulnerabilities, improving the implementation of the measure, and enhancing its socializing effects.
BACKGROUND:Hospital clothing harbors bacteria causing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). This study evaluated the association between silver, copper, and zinc oxide nanoparticle-impregnated textiles and HAI rates in an intensive care unit (ICU) setting. METHODS:A quasi-experimental ecological study in a 25-bed tertiary ICU compared. HAI rates across a 15-month baseline and 15-month intervention period using Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) interrupted time-series analysis, and multivariable Poisson regression model adjusted for time trend, bundle compliance, hand hygiene and ventilator utilization ratio. Antimicrobial efficacy was assessed via standardized microbiological methods. RESULTS:Patient characteristics did not differ between phases (SAPS3 P = .148). Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) rates decreased from 4.84 to 2.36 events/1,000 ventilation-days (17 vs 7 events; Wilcoxon, P = .045). Poisson regression estimated a 49% reduction in VAP incidence rate (IRR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.08-3.40; non-significant). ARIMA analysis did not detect a significant intervention effect (P = .817). Other HAI rates were unchanged. In vitro, bacterial reductions were 76.1% for Staphylococcus aureus, 52.4% for Escherichia coli, and 47.1% for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. CONCLUSIONS:Nanoparticle-impregnated textiles were feasibly implemented in an ICU and associated with reduced VAP rates. These hypothesis-generating findings support nanotechnology as a potential adjunct for HAI prevention, warranting future large-scale trials.
