This paper is concerned with the following semilinear elliptic equation involving the fractional Laplacian:(−Δ)su+g(x)|u|p−1u=λu|x|2s+f(x),in a bounded domain Ω of RN(N>2s), subject to the zero Dirichlet condition in RN∖Ω, where 0 1 and f∈Lg(p+1)/p(Ω). Under certain integrability assumptions on g, the existence of a solution is proved for every λ∈R. Moreover, the regularity of the solution is studied depending on the data.
Existing research shows contrasting evidence on the interconnections between anti-consumption and subjective well-being. Further, scant research exists on how time preferences might interact with anti-consumption and well-being. Using a quantitative survey with 333 UK participants (Study 1), we test hypotheses about how individuals’ temporal preferences, including long-term orientation and tendency to spend time meaningfully, impact the interconnection between anti-consumption and well-being. Results determine that spending time meaningfully mediates the relationship between anti-consumption and subjective well-being. Moreover, individuals who are more long-term orientated show lower levels of subjective well-being than individuals who are less long-term orientated. This is a counter-intuitive finding, which we test further (Study 2) using an experimental research design with a sample of 248 US participants. Results confirm that the relationship between anti-consumption and subjective well-being is mediated by spending time meaningfully. However, individuals who score high on frugality (a lifestyle related to both anti-consumption and long-term orientation) have a lower tendency to spend time meaningfully than individuals who score low on frugality. Our research contributes to the anti-consumption literature by clarifying the relationship between anti-consumption and subjective well-being and determining the significance of time preferences in this relationship. These contributions are significant, as they respond to calls for further research on the outcomes of anti-consumption and its interconnections with temporality.
Conservation agriculture is a promising approach to address the sustainability challenge of soil degradation facing Mediterranean farming systems. We documented the collective mental model of pioneering conservation agriculture farmers in Morocco, Spain, and Tunisia, including their motivations, perceived benefits, and how they overcome barriers in implementation. We find that pioneer farmers identify interlinked benefits including improved soil health and diversified farm incomes, and are motivated and aided in implementation by social factors that vary across spatial and temporal scales, ranging from individual agency to national policies. We discuss the implications of these factors for facilitating societal transition to conservation agriculture.
The Arecaceae family encompasses numerous tropical palms with notable nutritional and bioactive potential; however, tropical palm fruit species remain comparatively underexplored. This study characterised the biochemical composition of fruits from eight species: Attalea phalerata, Bactris gasipaes, Copernicia alba, Latania verschaffeltii, Syagrus kellyana, Syagrus orinocensis, Veitchia metiti, and Wodyetia bifurcata. In fruit pulps, substantial interspecific variability was observed in moisture (8.5-87.7%), total fatty acids (1.3-4.7% of dry weight), and protein contents (5.2-7.3% of dry weight). Fatty acid profiles of fruit pulps differed markedly in the proportions of polyunsaturated (PUFA, 12.0-41.8%), monounsaturated (MUFA, 16.3-40.5%), and saturated fatty acids (SFA, 34.2-47.6%), resulting in distinct nutritional indices among species, including atherogenic (AI, 0.3-1.5), thrombogenic (TI, 0.3-0.7), hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic (HH, 0.4-2.5), and stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) indices. The fruit pulps of B. gasipaes and L. verschaffeltii exhibited particularly favourable lipid profiles, with n-6/n-3 ratios below 1.0, indicating potential cardiovascular benefits. Seeds of W. bifurcata exhibited the highest HH index (2.3), indicating a pronounced hypocholesterolemic potential. Overall, these results demonstrate considerable biochemical diversity among tropical palm fruit and underscore their potential as alternative sources of lipids and plant proteins, supporting their potential use as human food ingredients.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is highly prevalent in internal medicine and often requires timely echocardiographic assessment. Limited availability of standard studies may delay management, particularly in acute or resource-limited settings. We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional study across 35 Spanish hospitals, enrolling adults with new-onset or chronic AF without echocardiography in the previous 12 months, comparing internist-performed point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) with blinded cardiologist-performed transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiography (TTE/TEE) as the reference standard. The primary outcome was diagnostic accuracy for structural abnormalities. Secondary outcomes included comparison with auscultation and the clinical impact of POCUS findings. Among 441 patients (mean age 80.4 ± 9.9 years; 51
