The University of Cape Verde (Portuguese: Universidade de Cabo Verde, abbreviated "Uni-CVV") is the only public university of Cape Verde. The main campus is in Palmarejo, Praia, but there are also institutes in Mindelo, Assomada and São Jorge dos Órgãos. It has over 5000 students. A new campus for Uni-CV is under construction in Palmarejo, financed by the Chinese government. It should be completed by July 2020. It will have capacity for 4,890 students and 476 professors, with a library, dorms, cafeterias and sports facilities. It will have 61 class rooms, five auditoriums with a capacity of 150 seats, eight computer rooms, eight reading rooms and 34 laboratories.
The rich biodiversity of West Africa supports a vast repository of medicinal plants, with traditional medicine playing a central role in managing diseases such as diabetes. Despite their widespread use, the safety and efficacy of these herbal treatments have not been scientifically explored. This study aims to analyze the traditional uses of antidiabetic plants in Economic Community of West African States countries in relation to the available scientific evidence. A three–step approach was used. Firstly, ethnopharmacological studies on diabetes management in West Africa were identified. Secondly, the twelve most cited plants were selected on the basis of their frequency of citation of traditional antidiabetic uses, and their citation in at least five of the countries considered. Thirdly, scientific databases were searched for available in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies examining the antidiabetic effects, antioxidant properties, and potential toxicity of the twelve plants selected. This study identified 638 medicinal plants from 32 ethnopharmacological studies conducted in eight West African countries. The twelve most cited plants were Mangifera indica, Rauvolfia vomitoria, Azadirachta indica, Morinda lucida, Launea taraxacifolia, Momordica charantia, Phyllanthus amarus, Vernonia amygdalina, Carica papaya, Annona senegalensis, Allium sativum and Ocimum gratissimum. Most remedies were prepared from leaves, roots, and bark, commonly as decoctions or macerations, and demonstrated notable hypoglycemic activity. However, the mechanism of action behind the antidiabetic activity of these plants has rarely been addressed, and few of these plants have undergone clinical trials and in–depth toxicological evaluations. This review highlights a significant gap between traditional knowledge and scientific assessment. Although these traditional medicinal plants show promise for diabetes management, further scientific validation is needed to ensure their safe and effective use in modern healthcare systems.
Pediatric pain remains a highly prevalent and under-addressed health problem worldwide, largely due to educational gaps, limited humanization of care, and insufficient integration of digital and pedagogical innovations in higher education, and the purpose of this study is to describe and implement an international, higher education-driven model to improve training in humanized pediatric pain management. This multicenter mixed-methods study involves 15 universities from Europe, Africa, and Latin America and includes the development and cross-cultural validation of the HUPEDCARE-Q questionnaire to identify knowledge gaps, the design of an open-access, multilingual digital learning platform (PEDCARE) that integrates learning management and social networking functions, and the implementation of capacity-building workshops based on a training-the-trainers model for students, educators, health professionals, and families. The expected outcomes of the project include the establishment of a standardized instrument for assessing educational needs, the creation of a scalable digital educational environment, and the feasibility of international academic collaboration to strengthen competencies in pediatric pain care. The study suggests that higher education, combined with digital transformation and culturally sensitive approaches, may support the humanization of pediatric pain management and address educational and health inequities, although further research is needed to confirm these potential impacts.
Pest birds represent significant threats to agricultural productivity and cause substantial economic losses around the world. Traditional pest control methods and tracking models are often laborious, harmful to the environment, and ineffective in practice. This paper explores the potential of deep learning models to improve pest bird detection and classification in agricultural settings. We evaluated the performance of three robust state-of-the-art object detection models, which are YoLOv8, Faster R-CNN, and C3Det, using various dataset configurations comprising high-resolution bird images, low-resolution bird images, and a mixed configuration. Our results show that while YOLOv8 excels in real-time detection of high-resolution bird images with a precision of 96.15
