Paris-Sud University (French: Université Paris-Sud), also known as University of Paris — XI, was a French research university distributed among several campuses in the southern suburbs of Paris, including Orsay, Cachan, Châtenay-Malabry, Sceaux, and Kremlin-Bicêtre campuses. The main campus was located in Orsay. Starting from 2020, University Paris Sud has been replaced by the University of Paris-Saclay.Paris-Sud was one of the largest and most prestigious universities in France, particularly in science and mathematics. The university was ranked 1st in France, 9th in Europe and 37th worldwide by 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) in particular it was ranked as 1st in Europe for physics and 2nd in Europe for mathematics.Five Fields Medalists and two Nobel Prize Winners have been affiliated to the university. On 16 January 2019, Alain Sarfati was elected President of Université Paris-Sud. He succeeds Sylvie Retailleau who was elected as President of ComUE Université Paris-Saclay.
Excessive nighttime light is known to have detrimental effects on health and on the environment (fauna and flora). The paper investigates the link between nighttime light pollution and economic growth, air pollution, and urban density. We propose a county model of consumption which accounts for spatial interactions. The model naturally leads to a dynamic general nesting spatial model with unknown common factors. The model is estimated with data for 3071 continental US counties from 2012–2019 using a quasi-maximum likelihood estimator. Short run and long run county marginal effects emphasize the importance of spillover effects on radiance levels. Counties with high levels of radiance are less sensitive to additional growth than low-level counties. This has implications for policies that have been proposed to curtail nighttime light pollution.
Treatment aims at correcting mass effects and reducing GH and IGF-I levels to normal/safe values. When surgery, the usual first-line treatment, fails to achieve this goal, medical treatment with dopamine agonists (DA) or somatostatin analogs (SA) is generally proposed. The GH-receptor antagonist pegvisomant is helpful in patients who are totally or partially resistant to SA. Thanks to this multistep therapeutic strategy, adequate hormonal control is achieved in most patients, giving them a normal life expectancy. Nowadays, radiotherapy is generally used as third- or fourth-line treatment due to the long latency (many years) of its anti-secretory effects and its potential complications.
Objective:Dinutuximab beta (dB) immunotherapy is used as maintenance treatment for relapsed/refractory neuroblastoma (NBL); however, comparative studies directly comparing dB with no dB therapy in this setting are lacking. This study aimed to indirectly compare dB (with or without interleukin-2) with no immunotherapy in patients with relapsed NBL. Methods:Three studies of dB (APN311-202, APN311-304, and APN311-303) with individual patient data, along with two historical control cohorts (INBR and R1) were included. Both unadjusted (naïve) and population-adjusted comparisons of overall survival (OS) were performed, with adjustment conducted using inverse probability or odds weighting. Harmonized inclusion criteria were applied across all study populations. The adjusted comparison used the propensity score reweighting to balance the cohorts based on key baseline prognostic factors. Results:The base-case unadjusted indirect comparison revealed that dB (with or without IL-2) significantly prolonged OS compared to historical controls not treated with dB (hazard ratio [HR], 0.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.31- 0.79; p<0.001). Similarly, in the adjusted comparison, dB significantly prolonged OS compared to historical controls (HR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.35; 0.79, p=0.002). All sensitivity unadjusted and adjusted comparisons supported the results of the base-case analysis. Conclusion:Dinutuximab beta significantly prolonged OS compared to historical control cohorts not treated with dB in both unadjusted and adjusted indirect comparisons.
There exist many examples of systems which have some symmetries, and which one may monitor with symmetry preserving controls. Since symmetries are preserved along the evolution, full controllability is not possible, and controllability has to be considered inside sets of states with same symmetries. We prove that generic systems with symmetries are controllable in this sense. This result has several applications, for instance: (i) generic controllability of particle systems when the kernel of interaction between particles plays the role of a mean-field control; (ii) generic controllability for families of vector fields on manifolds with boundary; (iii) universal interpolation for neural networks architectures with "generic" self attention-type layers - a type of layers ubiquitous in recent neural networks architectures, e.g., in the Transformers architecture. The tools we develop could help address various other questions of control of equivariant systems.
How ecosystems will provide ecosystem services in the future given uncertain changes in climate and land use is an open question that challenges decision-making on adaptation to climate change. Prospective assessments of ecosystem services should carefully include and communicate the sources of uncertainties that affect the predictions. We used the ecosystem service of soil protection against erosion in the Maurienne Valley (French Alps) as a case study to illustrate how several sources of uncertainties can be integrated into an assessment of future ecosystem service supply. We modeled future erosion rates in the Maurienne Valley for years 2020 and 2085 using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and six climatic and socioeconomic scenarios. We quantified how the ecosystem service supply will be likely affected by climate and land-use change, separately and jointly. We assessed the effects of different sources of uncertainty on projected erosion rates: scenarios, climate models choice, and methods to parametrize the ecosystem service model. Land-use change increased erosion (+ 3.3 ton.ha-1.yr-1 on average, with significant increases in 81 % of the study site), while climate change contributed to a slight reduction (-0.21 ton.ha-1.yr-1 on average with significant decrease 20 % of the study site). The uncertainty of the ecosystem service model parameterization explained 93 % of the variance in erosion values. Furthermore, uncertainty linked to climate models and future scenarios contributed almost equally to the variability in the direction (positive or negative) of erosion change (41 % and 38 % respectively). The uncertainties surrounding the direction of future changes in ecosystem services come mainly from uncertainties in climate models and future scenarios rather than from uncertainties in the ecosystem service model parameters. Assessing the likelihood of future changes in ecosystem services helps prioritize locations where adaptation solutions are likely to be needed.
