Purpose Although much research has been done on the Big Five personality traits that underpin individual performance in teams, knowledge of the interdependencies of traits for individual performance is rather limited and especially so in the new ordinary workplace represented by global virtual teams (GVTs). The purpose of the study is to explore how personality traits combine in configurations that lead to high individual performance in GVTs. Design/methodology/approach Based on the configurational perspective, we use fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on a sample of 697 students nested within 171 GVTs to examine the influence of the personality traits on peer-rated individual performance. Findings Three distinct configurations of traits, each including agreeableness, account for high levels of individual performance in GVTs. Agreeableness, which is found to be a necessary condition, emerges as a favorable trait in GVTs and is associated with high individual performance across three different combinations with other personality traits. Originality/value This study offers a deeper understanding of the interplay between personality traits and their causal conditions for high individual performance in GVTs, thereby enriching the literature. It contributes to the growing body of literature on virtual team dynamics, providing insights that can help organizations optimize team composition and performance in the increasingly digital workplace.
Interaction design is considered important for achieving usable Web user interfaces. Communicative acts as abstractions from speech acts can model basic building blocks (‘atoms’) of communication, like a question or an answer. When, e.g., a question and an answer are glued together as a so-called adjacency pair, a simple ‘molecule’ of a dialogue is modeled. Deliberately complex discourse structures can be modeled using relations from Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). The content of a communicative act can refer to ontologies of the domain of discourse. Taking all this together, we created a new discourse metamodel that specifies what discourse models may look like. Such discourse models can specify an interaction design. This tutorial demonstrates how such an interaction design can be used for automated Web user-interface generation. Based on AI optimization techniques, the graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are automatically generated and tailored to a device such as a smartphone according to a given device specification. Our approach, in contrast to others, can explore alternatives in the design space of GUIs. We present a user story about this theme using our approach, which also includes employing unique customization techniques to address usability.

The Supreme Court's Kelo decision upheld local governments' right to use eminent domain in furtherance of an economic development plan under the premise that their public purpose includes the jobs and tax revenue generated by such developments. Following Kelo, 21 states effectively banned economic development as a justification for eminent domain condemnations. Whereas previous research examined the impact of eminent domain restrictions at the state level, this paper's focus is at the metropolitan-area level, where the inefficient underassembly of property that eminent domain is meant to correct is most acute. Difference-in-differences methods found that metropolitan areas in states that restrict the use of eminent domain experience statistically significant negative treatment effects on employment and earnings following the restrictions. As four Supreme Court justices have indicated a willingness to reconsider Kelo, these findings provide further insight into the economic assumptions supporting the ruling.
