A high performance liquid chromatography method was employed to detect DDT-type residues in milk samples collected from Ismailia governorate. o,p-DDT and p,p-DDE were the most frequent residues detected. In none of the testet samples the total DDT residues exceeded the maximum residue limit (MRL) for DDT complex.
In chronic experiments (4 months) in rabbits, rats, and mice biological effects were investigated from 7 exposure regimen of electromagnetic fields with a frequency of 24 MHz at field strengths of the electric field component of 125, 250, 500, and 1,000 V/m, respectively, and an exposure time of 0.25, 1, and 4 hrs. respectively. The effects on the CNS, the immune and hormone systems, the peripheral blood and on the spermato and embryo genesis were estimated. The results delivered the basis for the introduction of an index. In point of time different limit values are to be determined according to the energetic load. A concrete value for the energetic load 7,200 (V/m)2.h is proposed as maximum allowable field strength of the electric component 300 V/m.
This is a report about the fundamentals of computerised optimation of duration of operation and air exchange for the use of working machines and cars with internal combustion engines in workrooms. The computer programme 'EMI', which bases on the corresponding national standard TGL 33,358/01 to /03, is suitable for the dialog work with the operator. On the foundation of the ensuring compliance with the maximum working place concentration values MAKK and MAKD it is possible to optimize the contrary requirements like air exchange and duration of operation of the internal combustion engines. The programme can be used for GDR-usual computers. It is possible to order the computer programme 'EMI' including user hints at Mansfeld Industrieanlagen Dresden.
During 18 years occurred an enormous (fivefold) increase of the country-wide registered frequency of in-patient cases with the diagnosis alcoholism. This development is connected with a decrease of the length of stay. Fife hypotheses to these findings are discussed. The dynamic is different by age, sex and hospital wards. The various length of stay indicates different contents of treatment, from the detoxication with the shortest length of stay (0-3 days) to the narcotherapy (several months) to the long-stay patients (several years).
The biological control procedure for carbon disulphide (CS2), the determination of free and bound CS2 in urine--a procedure already applied to hygienic surveillance--were modified by using gas chromatography and sulphide selective detection (FPD). The results obtained by the changed biological monitoring test in workplace and environmental surveillance are present and discussed. For CS2 concentrations at workplaces in the range of 8-54 mg/m3 a correlation coefficient of r = 0.56 (n = 11, p less than 0.07) was calculated for the mathematical connection of CS2 shift exposure and CS2 content in urine. For environmental exposures in the range of the CS2 immision short term threshold value (MIKK) of 0.03 mg/m3 the procedure may discriminate significantly exposure load from naturally occurring CS2 background.
To study chronic nonspecific respiratory diseases of people working in industrial swine confinement buildings, a cross sectional study was initiated. Based on history of diseases, clinical and parameters of ventilatory screening in 238 swine producers a frequency of chronic respiratory symptoms were found in 25.6%. The possible dependence on age, sex, smoking history, working conditions and duration of activity was investigated. The influence of professional and non professional factors had different intensity. The results of investigations of working conditions did not exceed the permitted maximal working place concentrations. So they could not prove the large frequency of respiratory diseases.
The estimation of benzpyrene in workplace-air by thin-layer chromatography with fluorimetric detection is described. Using a excitation-wavelength of lambda = 366 nm allows the application of this method by low expenditure. The steps of mode are confirmed.
To assess the strain imposed by defined static loads, eleven young males were studied in four different postures at three different loads held. In addition to the usual cardiovascular parameters of heart rate and arterial blood pressure, the long-term variability of the cardiac cycle (sinus arrhythmia) and the subjective exertion assessment according to Borg were used as strain criteria. Despite a high interindividual variability, HR arrhythmia data reflect in very good terms the strain imposed by predominantly central activation at static loads and forced postures. Such a strain assessment does not replace other modes of assessment such as biomechanical model considerations. Still, it may add to an assessment made on the basis of heart rate and blood pressure.
Various outbreaks of Listeria registered in the USA and Europe after eating cheese were the motive to investigate different cheese sorts of the GDR-production on the occurrence of Listeria species. Out of 100 samples of different cheese brands 11 curdled milk cheeses (11%) showed Listeria innocua, an nonpathogenic Listeria species.
Advantages and disadvantages of the estimation of the mass and number fibrous dusts concentrations are discussed. By using the reference phase contrast microscopic method (1) the data of interlaboratory comparative measurements of MMMF (man-made mineral fibres/density/f.mm-2) have been got and are presented. Total mass dust concentrations and number concentrations of MMMF and/or asbestos fibres are compared. The consequent measurements were made in the same time intervals and in the same workplaces. In conclusion both measuring methods are critically evaluated and their results are compared with the prescribed MAC-values. Presented results are of use when deciding what method with respect to the kind of fibrous dust and to the working operation should be chosen.
The characteristics of the politics in science of the NS-regime included the desire for a central management of the medical-scientific societies. The paper is devoted to the authorities established for this purpose and their influence in staffing, such as the formation of new structures. The scientific organizations, however, also got freedom and possibilities of influence. A further analysis of these is to be recommended.
The present paper reports on toxicokinetics of bromoxynil after oral administration of two different dosages in male and female rats. The concentrations measured in serum proceed with a terminal half life of 20 h. Differences in sex are expressed in MRT- and AUC-values. The simulated concentration course after multiple dosing corresponds essentially to experimental course (male rats). Toxicokinetics studies of liver and kidney show a saturation kinetics in kidney after oral administration of a high dose (100 mg/kg KM) in case female rats.
Copper, zinc, lead and cadmium content of the kidney, liver and lung derived from 1072 autopsies has been determined. The content of lead and cadmium in liver, the content of copper, cadmium and zinc in lung of the rural population (541 cases) was higher than those of the urban population (531 cases). The cadmium content difference of the lung was found to be significant (p less than 0.05). In the lung of the urban population the Zn/Cu relation was better (0.80) than in rural population (0.39). In the kidney and lung of the urban males (297 cases) the cadmium content was significantly higher than in females (234 cases). In the liver the differences were not significant. The Zn/Cu relation was found to be high in both sexes in kidney and in lung respectively (r = 0.90-0.87). In the rural population the sex difference are characteristic: The lead and cadmium content are significantly lower in the kidney and lung of the women. The lead content in the women's liver is lower (p less than 0.05).
Combinations of antimicrobial agents are often used in medical practice. The combination therapy aims a broader spectrum of chemotherapy and/or synergistic effects. The effect of combination of chemotherapeutics on bacteria may be described as synergistic, indifferent or antagonistic. Therefore, it is essential to test the effectivity of antimicrobial combinations in vitro. The checker-board-technique is the most frequently used test to assess antibacterial combinations. For this standard test macroscopically read an incubation time of 18-24 hours is necessary. To reduce this incubation time to 4 hours a rapid nephelometric method was developed. The results of this method showed a good correlation with the standard test.
For mining exposures the work-relatedness of morbidity measures and functional organ-related disorders was analysed on the base of data concerning medical screening, occupational exposure and disablement. Morbidity corresponds with intensity of occupational exposure. Using risiko measures results for disorders were interpreted in relation to a hypothesis, which allows to distinguish in our opinion diseases without work-relatedness from work-related and occupational diseases. The availability of a "normal exposed" control group and the choice of a well-defined exposed group, for which the definition of selected diseases as work-related is applicable alone, are decisive for the results. For mining exposures functional disorders of muscular and skeletal system require particular consideration.
The detection of antigens is the most important tool for rapid diagnosis of Legionellosis. 34 Legionella (L.) spp. with 51 serogroups have been identified from several sources. According to the antigenic diversity, it is necessary to select monoclonal antibodies (mab) adequate to diagnostic purposes. Mab with specificity to genus, species and serogroups were discussed. L. pneumophila accounts for 70 to 80% of all cases of Legionelloses. In this study self-made mab to L. pneumophila are presented that demonstrate these bacteria in clinical materials from respiratory tract using immunofluorescent tests and by detection of soluble antigens in pleura fluids and urine specimens using enzyme immunoassay.
