
Paper presents the list of species and brief distribution characteristics for 7 vascular plants found on the territory of Olkhon district of the Irkutsk Region. New locality of Aleuritopteris shensiensis has been revealed for the first time for the Irkutsk Region flora. Three species included in the Red Data Book of the Irkutsk Region (2020): Asparagus gibbus, Krascheninnikovia ceratoides, Oxytropis microphylla. The quarantine weedy plant Solanum triflorum has been detected for Olkhon district of the Irkutsk Region.
Orobanche alsatica Kirschl. is for the first time reported from Crimea with fairly identified specimen-based records; it is an 11th species of the genus confirmed for the peninsula (or a 14th, taking into account one unconfirmed and two very doubtful taxa). It was collected in two localities of the Crimean Foothills. Crimean plants show the flower size somewhat intermediate to a closely related O. bartlingii Griseb.: the corolla length is mostly 17–20 mm, while the stamens are inserted in 3–4 mm above the corolla base. However, we attribute these plants to O. alsatica based on a glandularly pubescent style, as well as the host Peucedanum alsaticum L., typical exactly of this species. In Crimea, the species is confined to plant communities of the class Festuco-Brometea Br.-Bl. et Tx. ex Soó 1947, sometimes transitional to Trifolio-Geranietea sanguinei T. Müller 1962. Orobanche alsatica was recently synonymized with O. buekii A. Dietr., a little-known name published a year earlier and hitherto considered a synonym of O. lutea Baumg.; however, we consider the name O. alsatica requiring proposal to be conserved to avoid disadvantageous nomenclatural changes entailed by the strict application of the principle of priority (Art. 14.1 of ICN).
Growing demand for hops with new organoleptic characteristics and improved agronomic performance provides a powerful impetus for the breeding of new varieties, which determines the need to create and maintain gene banks of the crop. Field gene banks are at great risk due to the threat of biotic and abiotic stress. The problem of preserving valuable germplasm can be solved by duplicating the gene pool in in vitro collections, one of the management tasks of which is to find ways to slow down the growth of crops. A protocol for the medium-term storage of Humulus lupulus has been developed, including all stages of propagule encapsulation technology: from the preparation of initial explants to their subsequent rehabilitation and restoration of regenerative capacity after deposition. The protocol has been successfully tested on four genotypes of varietal hops. For the first time, conditions for encapsulation of microcuttings have been selected that ensure their viability of at least 80 % after in vitro conservation at 4 °C. Treatment of the material with 3 % sodium alginate during the encapsulation stage, combined with 3 % calcium chloride during the polymerization stage, ensured high biocapsule survival. The optimal exposure time in the polymerizing solution did not exceed 10–15 minutes. It has been shown for the first time that 1 mg L-1 of abscisic acid in the artificial endosperm (AE) of biocapsules reduces the impact of cold stress during medium-term low-temperature storage of the material. Supplementing the Murashige-Skoog medium, which forms the basis of AE, with 2 mg L-1 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 1 mg L-1 Gibberellic acid (GA3) allows explants to form up to 3–4 internodes when cultivated immediately after deposition. Subsequent subculturing of hop microcuttings on MS nutrient medium containing 0.5 mg L-1 of kinetin promotes the restoration of photosynthetic activity in the regenerated plants. This approach ensures high regenerative and root-forming potential of emerging shoots over four successive cloning generations. The multiplication rate reaches 8–9 microcuttings per explant.
During the study of the lichen biota of Yakutia, Acarospora rosulata (Th. Fr.) H. Magn. was identified on the basis of morphological, anatomical, secondary metabolites and molecular data for the first time in Russia. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences revealed that the studied specimens form a well-supported clade (BS value = 86%) with specimens from Mongolia, USA, and Norway. The studied specimens are characterized by a brown, shiny, squamulose areolate thallus, sometimes with some outer lobes, numerous apothecia immersed in the areoles, a well-developed exciple, simple ellipsoid ascospores (4–5 × 1.5–2.5 μm) and the content of gyrophoric acid as the main substance. Lecanoric and hiascic acids are reported for the first time in the species. A comparative analysis of samples from Yakutia is carried out with descriptions by other authors. Since the original description of the species did not include a holotype, the article also provides a lectotypification based on the original material from Norway. A specimen stored in the herbarium of Uppsala University (UPS) was designated as the lectotype. A comparison with related species is also provided.
The study is devoted to clarifying the geographical distribution of Hesperis ciscaucasica and Hesperis pycnotricha within the Russian Federation. The results of this work are based on the analysis of the geographical characteristics of the species presented and on a review of herbarium materials from Eastern Europe and the Russian Far East from the LE collections.
The article presents a new data on the distribution of 7 species found in Eastern Kazakhstan. The plants were collected in the Abai and East Kazakhstan regions. Six species – Eriophorum × medium, Fritillaria katunica, Juncus biglumis, Pedicularis brachystachys, Sparganium gramineum and Veronica × altaica – were new to the flora of Kazakhstan. Phlomoides gymnocalyx was recorded for the first time in the Altai Mountain Country and the Abai Region. The labels of the studied specimens are fully cited, and comments are provided for all discussed species. Specimens of the presented taxa are stored in the herbarium collection of the KKGNPP, and duplicate materials have been deposited in the Herbarium of Altai State University (ALTB, Barnaul, Russia).
This work is aimed at searching for marker features and assessing the significance of these morphological characteristics of the flower and basal leaf blade in the process of species identification of some Siberian species of the genus Trollius is assessed. To solve this problem, both classical approaches to the analysis of morphology and modern geometric morphometrics approach were used, which had not previously been widely encountered in the Russian scientific papers. It has been determined that the parameters of the leaf blade actually play a rather important role in classifying a plant to a particular species. Pairwise Tukey tests were conducted for each individual feature and for the totality of all features. For some relative features, including those listed in the literature as taxonomically important, the significance of differences between species has been assessed. Based on the results obtained, the problem of morphological similarity of T. asiaticus and T. kytmanovii has been identified. Statistically significant features have been identified that allow us to resolve the issue of the independence of the T. vitalii and T. kolonok species – the length of the styles and the width of the nectary petals at the base. The interspecific variation of leaf blade shapes has been determined within the framework of geometric morphometry.
This article clarifies the taxonomic relationship of the endemic species Allium svetlanae Vved. ex Filim. from the Nuratau Range in Uzbekistan. While reviewing unpublished materials by A. I. Vvedensky, Z. N. Filimonova discovered four herbarium specimens of Allium svetlanae, which had been prepared for description, in a folder containing Allium oliganthum. Unfortunately, when describing the species, Z. N. Filimonova erroneously assigned the species to the section Haplostemon. Subsequently, F. O. Khassanov automatically transferred this species to the section Caeruleum of the subgenus Allium. Analysis of morphological and molecular data unambiguously assigns this species to the section Schoenoprasum of the subgenus Cepa. In terms of ecological association and morphology, Allium svetlanae is closest to A. oliganthum, common in the Kazakh Uplands, but differs from the latter in a number of features.
We describe and illustrate a new species, Raphiocarpus hapii, recently discovered in central Vietnam. It resembles R. sinovietnamicus but differs in dwarf habit, 20–30 (rarely 50) cm tall, spreading hirsute stems and leaves, shorter corolla, 1.5–1.8 cm long, with a tubular corolla tube, which is pale greyish-pink to dusky greyish-purple, tinged with maroon externally, and white with maroon to crimson internally, having scattered pilose hairs on the lower corolla mouth, and in shorter capsule, 1.8–2.5 cm. According to the IUCN criteria (2024), the new species may tentatively be assessed as Data Deficient (DD).
A syntaxonomic analysis of boreal larch (Larix gmelinii) forests belonging to the class Vaccinio–Piceetea was conducted on the Tukuringra Range (northern Amur Region, Russian Far East). The study utilized 142 original geobotanical relevés collected between 2012 and 2024 in the Zeya State Nature Reserve and the central part of the range. An ecological-floristic classification of forest communities was performed, and new syntaxa were described. As a result, within the two orders of the boreal forest class Vaccinio–Piceetea, the studied communities were assigned to the associations Lathyro humilis–Laricetum gmelinii (with the subassociations Lathyro humilis–Laricetum gmelinii typicum and Lathyro humilis–Laricetum gmelinii rhythidietosum rugosi subass. nov. hoc loco) and Rhododendro tomentosi–Laricetum gmelinii (with the subassociations Rhododendro tomentosi–Laricetum gmelinii rhododendrosum daurici subass. nov. hoc loco, Rhododendro tomentosi–Laricetum gmelinii betuletosum divaricatae subass. nov. hoc loco, and Ledo palustris–Laricetum cajanderi piceetosum ajanensis subass. nov. hoc loco). The distinctiveness of the identified syntaxa was justified based on floristic, ecological, and geographical criteria. For the first time, the study characterizes floristically impoverished forests, which are widespread in the Amur Region, Transbaikalia, and other regions of Eastern Siberia and the Far East, from the perspective of ecological-floristic classification. The paper discusses methodological limitations in classifying species-poor vegetation and compares the new syntaxa with known boreal forest associations via NMDS ordination.
This article presents information on the green microalga Pseudochlorella signiensis. Three strains of the alga were isolated from biological soil crusts of mountain tundra communities (Polar and Northern Urals) and from the surface of “algal blooms” snow (Subpolar Urals). New data on the biology, geography, and phylogeny of the species were obtained using light microscopy and molecular genetic methods (the nucleotide sequence analysis of ITS rDNA). Molecular studies support the first record of P. signiensis in Russia. The study expanded the description and ecology of this taxon. Its ecological and geographical characteristics were compiled and presented.
Additions are provided on the distribution of rare species of Potentilla in the territory of the Altai Mountain Country (AMC). Potentilla hubsugulica is reported for the first time from the flora of Kazakhstan; P. crantzii, P. penniphylla, and P. rigidula are new records for China. New to Russia are P. rhipidophylla and P. tytthantha, and new to Western Siberia are P. hubsugulica, P. × olchonensis and P. stepposa. These five species, as well as P. chalchorum and P. tuvinica, complemented the flora of the Republic of Altai. Among the plants mentioned, P. tytthantha is endemic to the AMC. All studied collections are cited, with comments provided on the relationships, ranges, and primary morphological differences of the discussed taxa. For the AMC subendemic P. rigidula, we present a scanned herbarium specimen image and photos of wild plants from the new locality. In addition, its general distribution has been mapped based on all known, reliably identified collections and observations.
As a result of a revision of the lichen genus Thelotrema in the Sakhalin Region (Russian Far East), two species are reported as new to the region. Thelotrema diplotrema is recorded for the first time in Russia, and T. suecicum is reported for the first time in Asia. T. diplotrema previously known only from evergreen forests in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Australia, and Asia, was found in an old-growth forest with bamboo understory on the bark of deciduous trees on Kunashir Island. This finding represents the northernmost locality of the species in the temperate zone. T. suecicum, a widespread lichen of rainforests and wet montane forests in the cool-temperate zones of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres (Europe, North and South America, Australia, and New Zealand), was collected in a warm, humid riparian forest on the bark of Alnus hirsuta in southern Sakhalin Island and in an oak forest on the bark of Quercus crispula on Iturup Island. Following this revision, three species of Thelotrema are confirmed for the Sakhalin Region, including the previously known T. lepadinum. Detailed morphological, anatomical, and ecological descriptions are provided, along with illustrations, diagnostic features of similar species, and an identification key for the species of Thelotrema and morphologically related taxa occurring in the region.
The polyploidy and hybridization in Spiraea evolution make species identification a complex process. The cytogenetic characteristics of hybrid individuals of Spiraea hypericifolia × S. media, along with those of their parental species, S. hypericifolia L. and S. media Fr. Schmidt, have been the subject of study. The study presents findings of the newly discovered locations of the hybrid S. hypericifolia × S. media in the Republic of Tyva. This is the first study to examine the relative DNA content of S. hypericifolia × S. media individuals. Genomic analysis revealed considerable variability in total genome size, ploidy level and chromosome number among Spiraea from three mixed Tuvinian populations. The results of the cytotyping by chromosome counting and genome size determination by flow cytometry were found to be consistent. Spiraea hypericifolia was found to exhibit a strictly diploid level (2n = 2x = 18). In S. media, three euploid levels were identified for the: diploid (2n = 2x = 18), autotriploid (2n = 3x = 27), autotetraploid (2n = 4x = 36), as well as an aneuploid (2n = 24). Additionally, mixoploidy is occasionally observed in the S. media species. Among the hybrid individuals of S. hypericifolia × S. media, the expected allodiploids (Tselinnoye) and allotetraploids (Turan, Tapsa) were identified. Hypotheses regarding the appearance of autotetraploid of S. media and allodiploid and allotetraploid hybrids of S. hypericifolia × S. media have been proposed. The most probable mechanism of origin of polyploid and hybrid Spiraea species is the disruption of meiosis with the formation of 2n gametes and/or somatic endomitosis. Our findings contribute to understanding of microevolutionary processes within the genus Spiraea. The hybrid S. hypericifolia × S. media has significant potential for use in landscape design and breeding and thus requires comprehensive study.
Salsola griffithii, a formerly endemic species in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan is reported from UAE as a new record from the south of the Persian Gulf. This record adds another evidence of the Irano-Turanian elements which extend their range into the Saharo-Sindian region. Furthermore, it contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the flora in the UAE and emphasizes the necessity for continued botanical research in the region. Detailed illustrations of Salsola griffithii in UAE, a short description, habitat, an updated distribution map and its phytogeographical importance are provided.
A morphological and molecular phylogenetic study of Selaginella specimens from Khanh Hoa, Dong Nai, and Dak Lak Provinces of Vietnam, previously identified as S. repanda, was conducted. As a result, it was concluded that these specimens represent a new species described here as S. pseudorepanda. Morphologically, this species resembles S. kurzii and S. repanda, but it is easily distinguished from them by having creeping main stems, a contiguous and imbricate arrangement of dorsal and ventral leaves on the main stems and branchlets, margins of ventral and axillary leaves densely long-ciliate, and ovate dorsal leaves with acuminate apex. The molecular phylogenetic analysis resolves S. pseudorepanda as a sister to S. minutifolia. Moreover, results of the spore morphology study also confirm that S. pseudorepanda is a distinct species.
During the study of the vegetation cover of the mountain mires of the Eastern Caucasus, a new species for Dagestan was discovered – Persicaria minor. In addition, new locations were found for 11 rare species of vascular plants and two species of mosses, among which Menyanthes trifoliata, Scorpidium cossonii, Philonotis falcata are listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Dagestan. In the vicinity of Makhachkala, a new location was found for the fungus Ganoderma lucidum, listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation and the Red Data Book of the Republic of Dagestan.
The genus Anthracothecium is re-reported for the territory of Russia. The article discusses that A. speciosum f. speciosum was mistakenly included in the lists of lichens of Russia, of the south of the Far East and of Shikotan Isl., and also that A. speciosum f. iturupiense morphologically and anatomically corresponds more closely to the genus Pyrenula. Thus, the tropical genus Anthracothecium is represented in Russia by one species, Anthracothecium australiense reported here to the Kunashir Island. This is a first record of the species in Russia which has previously been known to Australia, Oceania (New Guinea), Asia (Japan and China), North and South America (Brazil, Argentina). The species is characterized by large, brown muriform ascospores with thin walls, as well as immersed, erumpent, and semi-immersed, black, globose perithecioid ascomata (0.5–)0.7–1.0 mm wide with a short neck and lateral ostiole. The data on distribution, ecology, and distinctive features of the species as well as photos are provided.
The paper provides a description of a new species of Lagochilus subsect. Triangulolobi Zuckerw. (Lamiaceae) from Kyrgyzstan. Lagochilus ketmentubensis sp. nov. belongs to the affinity of L. platyacanthus Rupr. Last one species has distribution area from the northern-west China and Kazakhstan to northern Pamir-Alai (Alai Mt. Ridge and Alai valley), while L. ketmentubensis is distributed in the foothills around Ketmen-Tube depression (Western Tian Shan). A new species differs from morphological similar L. platyacanthus primarily by ovate or broadly ovate (vs. subulate) bracts. This character is firstly recorded in the genus Lagochilus but it was previously used for interspecies differentiation in other genera of the Labiatae family. The discovery of one more local endemic, closely related to a fairly widespread species, along with the previously described species Scutellaria botbaevae Lazkov and Salvia vvedenskii Nikitina, confirms the status of this territory as a distinct floristic district.
The article deals with new data on the flora of the Amur Region, revealed after the publication of the “Conspectus of the flora of the Amur Region” in 2008. Seventeen species are new for the flora of the region: Anthemis cotula, Calamagrostis pseudophragmites, Cardamine scutata, Carex atrofusca, C. subholarctica, Festuca sphagnicola, Datura stramonium, Glycyrrhiza pallidiflora, Lilium callosum, Luzula oligantha, Polemonium boreale, Rhinanthus minor, Salix arctica, Sanguisorba stipulata, Taraxacum badzhalense, Tofieldia pusilla, Valeriana gotvanskyi. Of which one species, Festuca sphagnicola, is listed for the flora of the Russian Far East for the first time. Two species were first recorded for the Daurian floristic region (Allium gubanovii, Turritis glabra) and two for the Burey floristic region (Helictochloa dahurica, Festuca litvinovii). New species were presented for the protected areas of the region: two species for the flora of the Zeisky Nature Reserve (Rumex crispus, Stellaria graminea) and ten species for the flora of the Norsky Nature Reserve (Corydalis turtschaninovii, Eleocharis ovata, Lemna minor, Persicaria amphibia, Platanthera densa, Potamogeton berchtoldii, P. octandrus, P. perfoliatus, Rhododendron subulatum, Spirodela polyrhiza). New information on the distribution of five rare and protected species in the region (Androsace umbellata, Najas tenuissima, Caldesia parnassifolia, Potamogeton lucens, Polygonatum stenophyllum) is presented.
