
As a result of 15 years of taxonomic inventory, the Swedish fauna of mycophagous gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae excl. Cecidomyiinae) is shown to include 97 genera (incl. 2 subgenera) and 639 species (incl. 19 aggregate species), not counting 178 species identified as unnamed. Species are listed and annotated regarding their geographical distribution outside and within Sweden, their first mention for Sweden in literature (“first report”), and publications useful for identification. Camptomyia alstromi Jaschhof & Jaschhof is described as a new species. Paurodyla serrulata (Jaschhof, 2013), previously classified in the genus Porricondyla Rondani, 1840, is a new combination. Species reported for the first time as occurring in Sweden are: Anarete corni (Felt, 1907); Anarete johnsoni (Felt, 1908); Anarete triarthra Edwards, 1938; Campylomyza cornuta Jaschhof, 1998; Campylomyza nigroliminata Mamaev, 1998; and Parepidosis ulmicorticis Mamaev, 1964. The last two species are diagnosed and illustrated. Provided also are: an introduction to the target group regarding diversity, biology, geographical distribution and study methods; an overview of classification; an outline of the inventory’s history; and a discussion reflecting on the status quo and the prospects for mycophagous cecidomyiid taxonomy. As a further component of the discussion, an attempt is made to estimate the number of species of Cecidomyiidae both in Sweden and the World, based on data at the authors’ disposal including that presented here.
Acrotona pilosicollis (Brundin, 1952) is a poorly known staphylinid species. Only two records exist from NE Europe after it was described in 1952. Here we report 97 individuals caught in pitfall traps in a dry meadow in eastern Finland in 2017. The species is similar to A. exigua (Erichson, 1837) but may be distinguished both on genital and external characters. The diagnostic spermatheca of the previously unknown female is described. On the basis of the new finds in Finland, A. pilosicollis is considered to be a stenotypic species of dry xerothermic meadows.
The Swedish species of Odontocolon Cushman, 1942, are revised and a new species, Odontocolon styx sp. nov. is described from Swedish material. Odontocolon thomsoni (Clement, 1938) syn. nov. is synonymized with Odontocolon appendiculatum (Gravenhorst, 1829). Odontocolon cretense (Szepligeti, 1914) stat rev. is excluded from synonymy with Odontocolon appendiculatum (Gravenhorst, 1829) and reinstated as a valid species. Odontocolon geniculatum (Kriechbaumer, 1889) is deleted from the Swedish species list. An illustrated key to the Odontocolon species occurring in Northern Europe is provided. A discussion on the potential role of Odontocolon-species as indicators of biologically rich forests and ecologically sustainable forestry is given.
Pemphredon enslini (Wagner, 1932) and Gorytes neglectus Handlirsch, 1895 are reported from Sweden for the first time. Both species were found during insect surveys in 2018, P. enslini in Stockholm in Central Sweden and G. neglectus at two sites in the province of Norrbotten in Northeastern Sweden. The habitats where they were found are described and the species morphology, ecology and distribution are discussed.
The tortricid moth Eucosma albidulana (Herrich-Schaffer, 1851) was found new to Sweden in Scania, Ahus. Three specimens, all males, were captured on June 23, 2020. The following night another specimen was captured in the same locality. Identification, biology and distribution are briefly discussed.
Two species of mycophagous gall midges (Cecidomyiidae: Porricondylinae: Porricondylini) are described as new to science and named Cassidoides bertanderssoni sp. nov. and Coccopsilis omtanke sp. nov. Both were discovered in 2019 during a taxonomic inventory of mycophagous gall midges in Dalarna’s Unnan valley, amply documented to be an area of extraordinary biological diversity. Other specimens collected during this survey represent the first Swedish records of the mycophagous cecidomyiids Camptomyia regia Spungis, 1989 and Neurolyga interrupta Jaschhof, 2009. The valley of Unnan, a non-straightened, fast-flowing river, is particularly remarkable for its jungle-like floodplain forest, of which extensive, largely unspoiled stretches have survived to the present day, and are shown here to host previously undescribed insect species. Unnan’s ecosystem is, demonstrably and acutely, threatened by continuous clear-felling. In the authors’ opinion such a loss of living environment for countless woodland organisms, many of which red-listed, is behind the times and inacceptable. Using the example of the Unnan, it is discussed here that new species descriptions should join other attempts to raise awareness of the intrinsic value of natural habitats, including old-growth forest, particularly on a local or regional scale. Omtanke (Swedish for consideration or concern) is highlighted as a genuinely Nordic principle, which is argued here to have the power to conciliate in, and finally help to resolve, the Unnan conflict, on condition that it is resolutely and relevantly implemented. Addendum A few days ago, on 17 December 2020, we were informed by Bengt Oldhammer, one of the two Orsa-based forest conservationists who supported our fieldwork in the Unnan valley, that the forest hosting the only known Swedish population of Neurolyga interrupta does not exist anymore. It fell victim to the clear-cutting activities criticized in our article as being “behind the times”. For this study, a part of the Swedish material of the subfamily Mesochorinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) collected by the Swedish Malaise Trap Project (SMTP) was determined. In the available material 97 different species of Mesochorinae were identified, 31 of them are new records for the Swedish fauna. Four species are new to science: Mesochorus albofacies sp. nov., Mesochorus longivalvator nov.sp., Mesochorus nigritor sp. nov. and Mesochorus nigroclypeatus sp. nov. The new taxa are described in detail and illustrated here. For Mesochorus frigidus Schwenke, 1999 and Mesochorus macrophyae Schwenke, 1999, the previously unknown males are described. Mesochorus skanensis Vikberg, 2017 is synonymized with Mesochorus terebratus Schwenke, 1999 and Mesochorus acutus Schwenke, 1999 is re-established as a separate species from Mesochorus suomiensis Schwenke, 1999. Stictopisthus Thomson is regarded as a subgenus of Mesochorus Gravenhorst. This is the third contribution to the fauna of Ichneumonidae from the Swedish Malaise Trap Project, following Riedel & Magnusson (2014) and Riedel & Magnusson (2017).

Six species of beetles new to the Swedish fauna are presented. Megasternum immaculatum (Stephens, 1829) (Hydrophilidae) has been confirmed to occur in the north of Sweden in natural conditions as well as in the south, living in compost. Carpelimus punctatellus (Erichson, 1840) (Staphylinidae) was found using suction sampling in a xerotherm ruderal area in the city of Malmo. Meligethes sulcatus Brisout de Barneville, 1863 (Nitidulidae) have been shown to occur on Lamium album in eastern Smaland. Diaclina fagi (Panzer, 1799) (Tenebrionidae) was found in numbers in the province of Oland in agricultural remains with mouldy grains and peas. Psylliodes reitteri Weise, 1888 (Chrysomelidae) has been found in Scania on one occasion in two specimens in a suitable habitat. Stora Karlso is a small island close to Gotland in the Baltic Sea of which the Hymenopteran fauna has not been extensively studied before. In August 2014, a team of eight persons carried out an inventory of Hymenoptera, mainly the parasitoid wasps and sawflies, on the island. Sampling was done with Malaise traps for a period of 22 days, complemented with vegetation sweeping, branch shaking and opportunistic handpicking during a five day sojourn. As a result, about 200 species of parasitoid wasps and 14 sawflies are reported for Stora Karlso for the first time. Eleven species are reported as new to Sweden: The sawfly Athalia cornubiae Benson, 1931, the gasteruptiid Gasteruption opacum (Tournier, 1877), the diapriid Spilomicrus rufitarsis (Kieffer, 1911), the eulophid Entedonomphale bulgarica Boyadzhiev & Triapitsyn, 2007, the braconids Bracon rozneri Papp, 1998 and Gnamptodon decoris (Forster, 1862), and the ichneumonids Bathythrix maculata (Hellen, 1957), Heterischnus filiformis (Gravenhorst, 1829), Lissonota picticoxis Schmiedeknecht, 1900, Mesochorus tipularius Gravenhorst, 1829, Ophion brevicornis Morley, 1915, and Plectochorus iwatensis (Uchida, 1928). Also the gasteruptiid Gasteruption opacum (Tournier,1877) is reported new to Sweden based on a record from inventory by NJ in 2013. This demonstrates how the knowledge of Swedish biodiversity can be substantially augmented by a short and intensive collecting expedition. We strongly recommend that other places in the country be subjected to similar efforts.
