Abstract: Despite increasing evidence linking electroencephalography (EEG) features to neurodevelopment and psychopathology, their clinical use in child and adolescent psychiatry remains largely limited. This paper proposes a translational framework that situates EEG-derived neurofunctional markers within four complementary levels of interpretation: (1) normative and developmental reference; (2) functional domains aligned with the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework; (3) theory-driven models such as vigilance regulation, metacontrol, and brain age; and (4) contextual moderation including adversity and sociodemographic factors. Rather than conceptualizing EEG as a deterministic tool, this framework supports differentiated characterization of transdiagnostic phenotypes and individual functional profiles. The aim is to expand clinical reasoning by integrating EEG process data into individualized, biologically grounded diagnostic strategies for youth mental health.
Abstract: This study explored how adjusting recall periods affects the psychometric properties and factorial invariance of two mental health instruments for children and adolescents. The parental version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the self-report version of the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children Symptom Checklist (HBSC-SCL) were both modified to use a 1-week recall period from the original 6-month period to better reflect the rapid changes in the COVID-19 situation and related preventive measures. The work is part of the COVID-19 and Psychological Health (COPSY) study, which focuses on the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents during COVID-19 and other crises. In this paper, 414 parents of children and adolescents aged 7 – 21 completed both the original and adapted versions of the SDQ, while 287 adolescents aged 11 – 21 responded to the HBSC-SCL (original and adapted version). Basic psychometric properties, including Cronbach’s α, were calculated and compared across the different instrument versions. Factorial invariance was assessed through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results indicated small differences between the original and adapted versions of the instruments, with the mean scale score differences showing small effects ( d effect size < .25). The CFA demonstrated some invariance between the two instrument versions of the HBSC-SCL and those of the SDQ. Some basic discrepancies were noted in the factorial model of the SDQ. In conclusion, this study provides promising evidence that short-term recall adaptations are a feasible methodological approach for mental health assessments during rapidly changing crises. However, it is essential to compare the psychometric properties of the adapted versions with those of the originals.
Abstract: In this study, we developed and tested a low-threshold online screening tool for postacute/long-COVID syndrome (PACS) to identify individuals who need further clinical assessment. Screening criteria stem from existing literature and diagnostic guidelines. A total of N = 1,366 participants completed the screening tool, n = 784 of whom screened positive for PACS. Of these, n = 63 participants, selected based on feasibility and available clinical resources, underwent comprehensive, 3-day clinical diagnostics (including blood tests). Based on these assessments, clinical practitioners confirmed that n = 60 participants were PACS-positive (95.2 % confirmed cases). Using repeated-measures ANOVA and MANOVA, we assessed differences in symptom severity over time between positive and negative cases. Symptom severity decreased over time ( F[2.166] = 18.68, p < .001), and 11 out of 14 symptoms were more severe in those who had screened positive, but we found no significant interaction between time and screening results. These results suggest that the online screening tool effectively diagnoses potential PACS cases and enables a timely prioritization for clinical evaluation. This approach offers an efficient and scalable method for prioritization in primary care, reducing healthcare systems’ burden while ensuring that patients with more severe symptoms receive timely medical attention.
Abstract: As a result of COVID-19 disease, a relevant proportion of affected people experience persistent symptoms (postacute sequelae of COVID, PASC, long(–haul), or post-COVID, LC or PCS) and their impact on life quality. Given the multifaceted nature of PCS, to date, there is no precise diagnostic method for identifying it. However, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are particularly important in diagnostics. Various PROMs for PCS were developed during the pandemic, and existing PROMs have been adapted. This systematic review examines the psychometric quality of published PROMs to assess PCS and provides recommendations for future use following the COSMIN procedure (COnsensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments). We searched PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycInfo in December 2023 and again in June 2024 and included articles describing the development and/or psychometric properties of the PROMs to assess PCS. Three independent reviewers screened abstracts and full texts for eligibility, assessed their methodological quality according to the COSMIN Risk of Bias Checklist, and determined the measurement properties using the COSMIN Manual for Criteria on Good Measurement Properties. We identified 10 different PROMs described in 23 articles, none of which performed well regarding all the investigated psychometric properties. Only one PROM was fully developed according to the COSMIN recommendations. All PROMs for PCS require further psychometric evaluation, as none have sufficient measurement properties.
: Guided imagery psychotherapy (GIP) is an established method of psychodynamic therapy. This study aimed to develop and validate a therapist-report questionnaire to assess patients' suitability for GIP relative to psychodynamic treatment without imagery. We generated the items based on a qualitative interview study with expert practitioners of GIP. In a consecutive online survey, N = 144 GIP therapists used the items to rate a total of N = 313 past cases. GIP was employed in half of these cases; the other half was treated with psychodynamic therapy without the use of imagery. Based on factor analyses and theoretical considerations, we identified two general factors comprising 9 items in total. In addition, we extracted a third factor with 5 items that captures patients' responses to trial runs of imagery during the initial treatment phase. Logistic regression analyses showed accuracies of 73.5 % for the two-factor model and 93.9 % for the three-factor model in predicting whether GIP had been applied in a given case. These results indicate that the Suitability Questionnaire for GIP is an ecologically valid operationalization of how GIP practitioners decide whether to use the method.
The Hamburger Schreib-Probe (HSP) is a popular tool in research and practice for assessing spelling skills. It is unique in that it provides not only an overall score but also information about the mastery of spelling strategies. Using data from 11 cohorts of fifth-grade classes at a secondary school in Baden-W & uuml;rttemberg, this is the first study to examine the construct validity of the instrument using factor analytical methods and to investigate the information content of its characteristic strategy scores. In line with the theoretical foundation of the HSP, the unidimensional measurement model fit was confirmed. However, we found no metric measurement invariance for the cohorts examined. We were also able to point to the information gain of the spelling strategy scores, which allow a more differentiated characterization of students' performance profiles than the overall scores alone. The performance curves of the classes examined were consistent with the results of recent representative surveys as well as with findings on the possible consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. The HSP appears to be a theoretically and psychometrically sound measurement instrument with high information density. However, its skewed distribution is a notable psychometric weakness. Further studies on representative samples with relevant covariates are needed to assess the suitability of the HSP for widespread use in schools.
Information security behavior has become a key competency in almost all professional fields, as the ability to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access, loss, theft, or damage is considered essential in today's digital work environment with increasing cyberattacks. However, there is a lack of valid, practical tools for assessing and promoting information security competencies. To address this gap, we developed a new assessment tool that captures information security competencies in three threat-related categories: insecure password management, privacy and security breaches, and social engineering. We validated the instrument on a sample of young professionals in typical office-based roles (N = 216). Confirmatory factor analyses support a three-factor structure based on these threat categories. Moreover, the test scores exhibit the expected convergent correlations with self-assessments of information security as well as discriminant correlations with social and methodological competence. Significant differences in test performance between early-career and experienced professionals (N = 99) provide evidence of known group validity. These findings underscore the strong fit of the Situational Judgment Test for evaluating targeted training programs among young administrative and business professionals. It also serves to identify participants' developmental needs, which have been assessed primarily through self-report measures.
: Expectations of self-efficacy, understood as the belief in one's ability to successfully perform certain actions, play an important role in the actions of professionals in early childhood education. This study developed a questionnaire on expectations of gender-related self-efficacy (GSWE) and examined its psychometric quality and validity. We evaluated the GSWE in two studies with a total sample of N = 279 preschool teachers. We identified three empirical scales that reflect theoretical assumptions about addressing gender in early childhood education: gender awareness, overcoming gender roles, and gender specificity. The subscales showed good internal consistency (alpha = .86-.97). Additionally, we developed a short scale to assess educators' basic beliefs about gender (alpha = .76). We found correlations within the GSWE scales and with sociodemographic characteristics as well as with established measures of gender stereotypes. The questionnaire can be used in both research and practice.
: During the COVID-19 pandemic, conspiracy beliefs posed major barriers to vaccination acceptance. To comprehensively assess conspiracy beliefs, we added 13 literature-based items to the 3 ConspiracyR items of the 7C scale on vaccination readiness. N = 500 adults (18 to 88 years) answered the 7C scale and the ConspiracyR items in an online survey (April 2022 to March 2023). Then we conducted ordinal confirmatory factor analysis. For 15 of the 16 ConspiracyR items, a joint analysis with five facets of the 7C scale revealed a three-dimensional ConspiracyR structure (Vaccine-related suspicionR, Denial of necessityR, Paranoiac suspicion of manipulationR, omega = .956/.746/.897; CFI = .988; SRMR = .031) as best fitting. While Vaccine-related suspicionR correlates with ConfidenceR at r = .959, Denial of necessityR and Paranoiac suspicion of manipulationR are more distinct (r = .820, .832). Age and school education correlate most strongly with Paranoiac suspicion of manipulationR (r = -.211, .378). Vaccine-related suspicionR and Paranoiac suspicion of manipulationR predict vaccination status and attitudes toward vaccination and the application of COVID-19 protective measures. By broadening the indicator pool and identifying subdimensions, vaccination-related conspiracy-beliefs can be assessed in a more differentiated and reliably manner. The proposed assessment should be validated in further areas in which conspiracy beliefs influence vaccination-related attitudes and decision-making. : Digital phenotyping uses data collected from smart devices to track and predict biological, psychological, and social aspects of human behavior and experience. This approach shows great potential for psychodiagnostics. This article describes possible applications for psychodiagnostics. This study draws on empirical insights from the Corona Health App study, an initiative conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, to examine the lessons learned. The Corona Health App study recruited a large number of participants (N = 4,041) over a broad age range. However, the predictive utility of the sensing data was limited compared to self-report measures and findings from other relevant studies, potentially because of short observation windows, low sensor richness, and a focus on between-person variation. These limitations point to the need for richer, longitudinal data collection and more nuanced intraindividual analyses. The project also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and preregistration and reporting standards. Based on these findings, the paper offers practical recommendations for advancing digital phenotyping research.
