
In this paper, we will discuss the role of the built environment as storytelling in the context of Oscar winner Parasite, a film by director Bong Joon-Ho (2019). We will look at the potentiality of the built environment in unveiling film narratives, especially regarding immanent forms of class struggle and exploitation in everyday life. We will investigate the troubling power relations between the rich and the poor in contemporary society and the ways that the concepts of alienation/estrangement, objectification/reification and commodity fetishism can be used to bring these relations to the fore when analyzing the movie. Artistic expressions convey the perception, culture, and emotional dimensions of those who conceive, interact with, and transmit them. Patativa do Assaré, a popular poet, exemplifies this multifaceted grasp through his extensive work that portrays the landscape, culture, people, and history of the northeastern backlands. His book, "Sing There That I Sing Here - Philosophy of a Northeastern Troubadour," is the focus of this study. The aim was to identify common plant names, analyse them, and assess whether the poet could still draw inspiration from these plants today. The verses contain 2,639 citations related to nature, with 597 terms, 64 of which directly refer to plants. Botanical names were inferred through verse analysis and comparison with herbarium specimens from the Cariri region of Ceará. Despite increasing anthropisation, much of the landscape and place could largely be retold. This research joins others in enhancing the value of biological and cultural conservation, contributing to the conservation status of the imburana and pequi, as evoked by the artist in his work. This study aims to analyze and define the appropriate terminology for "small cities," "local cities," "small localities," or "mikripolitan space". To achieve this, one of the methodological procedures was a comprehensive literature review regarding the subject, highlighting key authors of Brazilian geography, such as Pierre Monbeig, Milton Santos, Roberto Lobato Corrêa, Tania Maria Fresca, and Ângela Maria Endlich. The study underscores the lack of available research on these geographical spaces. Monbeig (1957) argued that small cities warrant investigation due to their unique complexity. Santos (2008) also acknowledged the paucity of studies on these cities, accentuating their significance as entities comparable to large cities in developing countries. In Espaço e Método [Space and Method], Santos (2008b [1985]) expounded on how complexity increases as the scale of study diminishes. While Endlich (2017) reported an increase in academic production on small localities, she nonetheless observed that it remains insufficient. Data from the 2022 Demographic Census demonstrated that in 88.01% of Brazilian municipalities the population is less than 50,000, thus reflecting the importance of this topic. In order to exemplify, the study also proposes to analyze the network and the intermediate geographic region of Cascavel in the state of Paraná. The article presents five hypotheses regarding our evaluation of the current emergence of the geographical space of the militia form. To construct this hypothesis, the Metropolitan West of Rio de Janeiro (MWRJ) has been selected as the preferred locus for the rise of this social form. In an exercise of regionalization, we connect the terms of this socio-spatial presence within the scope of the current center-periphery relationships transcribed in the Brazilian urban network. Presenting the hypotheses and weaving them from cartographic data, we bring elements to the understanding of the negative character of the modernization entangled in this fragment of the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro in recent decades. Water quality is one of the topics of greatest concern worldwide, as it is a fundamental resource for life, whose constant monitoring is necessary. The objective of this work was to carry out seasonal monitoring of water quality in the Urutu-MS stream, occupied by more than 50% of eucalyptus silviculture forests. Water samples were collected from five points seasonally between autumn 2019 and summer 2020. Twenty-three parameters included such as temperature, pH, Dissolved oxygen, Conductivity, Alkalinity, Organic matter, Chloride, Sulfate, Total iron, Color, Turbidity, Total dissolved solids, Total suspended solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total phosphorus, Hardness, Aluminum, Manganese, Magnesium, Sodium, Calcium, Copper and Dissolved Iron. The results showed that there is a difference in water quality between the seasons due to the different concentrations of physicochemical parameters. Spring was in class II, while the others were in class I, showing the influence of the onset of rain after the dry winter. Interactions between parameters followed conventional associations such as Alkalinity and Conductivity, SDT and Conductivity, Color and Turbidity, SST and Turbidity, Conductivity and Calcium, Conductivity and Magnesium. Agricultural production is directly related to the environmental conditions. Favorable conditions can lead to higher productivity and product quality. However, climate change may pose a threat to agricultural production across the globe, as a rise in temperature may cause a decrease in the extent of suitable areas for growing certain crops. Using spatial analysis and data from future climate change scenarios developed by the IPCC, this research aims to evaluate the impact of climate change on the sugarcane and citrus plantations in the state of Sao Paulo from agroclimatic zoning mapping. The results of this research demonstrate that both crops can suffer great reduction of areas suitable for cultivation if there are severe changes in the climate regime, and these results can be used by managers and researchers to mitigate these potential impacts, as well as to clarify how climate change affects life on the planet, with the possible reduction of food and bioenergy production.
The article is based on original maps produced using data from the Atlas of Violence published by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) and the Brazilian Public Security Forum, showing huge spatial differences in the distribution of homicides. They associate the number of homicides recorded in each of the country's municipalities (represented by the size of the proportional circles) and the proportion of these homicides in relation to the municipal population (represented by a color gradation), while the background map is colored according to the municipal development index calculated by Firjan. The map drawn for the year 2021 confirms a clear evolution in relation to previous situations (1989, 1999, 2009 and 201), a shift in crime towards the Northeast and North regions, while the number and proportion of homicides in the population fell rapidly in the main capitals of the Southeast. Urban ecology increasingly recognizes urban vacant lots as spaces with untapped aesthetic, social, and environmental potentials. This study focuses on strategies for converting these lots into green areas in Mossoró, a semi-arid city in Brazil, by analyzing urban connectivity patterns. Using a Geographic Information System, the study identifies priority areas for green space conversion based on factors like urban planning, density, land cover, and vacant lots. The analysis revealed 429 hectares of highly suitable land for conversion. A resistance surface was also created, factoring in public amenities and urban infrastructure, which showed varying levels of resistance to human movement. Areas with well-developed infrastructure had lower resistance, encouraging human and ecological movement. Connectivity modeling highlighted a need for more green infrastructure, especially in peripheral regions, to address socio-spatial fragmentation and enhance urban resilience in Mossoró. Soil erosion is currently the main cause of soil degradation. Therefore, it is urgent to implement technologies that aim to reduce erosion processes. The effects of hydrogel on water storage and its ability to reduce surface runoff and soil losses were evaluated. Experiments were set up in pots and in the field, with different doses of hydrogel and under different managements, respectively. In pots, the treatments were: T0 and T02 - 0 g of hydrogel; T0.5g - 0.5 g; T1g - 1 g; T2g - 2g; T3g - 3 g; T4g - 4g and T5g - 5 g of hydrogel. In the field, 13.3 g of hydrogel/m2 was applied to erosion plots installed in an area with soursop cultivation under different conservation managements, namely: – T1 - Planting in contour lines + stone cordons + grass planting; T2 - Planting downhill, without grass; T3 - Contour planting + grass planting and T4 - Downhill planting + grass planting. The total volume of water percolated in each pot and the surface runoff and soil losses were measured. It was concluded that doses between 4 and 5 g/pot cause increases in water retention of more than 20%, mainly after 4 or 5 wetting and drying cycles. The high variability of the treatments made it difficult to measure the effects of the hydrogel on soil losses, requiring more field studies using the polymer. This paper aims to produce a theoretical essay about the modern hotel from a historical and critical perspective, seeking to broaden knowledge about the mutation of this architectural typology in the context of the development of mass tourism, hypothesizing that hotels are "lodging machines". This is a conceptual discussion aimed at fostering and subsidizing the debate on hotels built between the late 1940s and the 1970s, in the context of the Modern Movement. To this end, he recalls the semantic and typological antecedents of the hotel and discusses how the social practices of mass tourism and the role of the state were reflected and reproduced in the mechanisms of modern hotels. Then, it presents aspects relating to the formal and functional typologies that support the idea that the modern hotel is a lodging machine, emphasizing some characteristics that express its architectural modernity. Finally, it highlights the historical and heritage relevance of modern hotels and the importance of documentation for intervention and conservation of this collection as material witnesses of modern architecture and mass tourism. Landforms can orientate the hydrodynamics and distribution of materials on the ground, producing flattened and/or lowered geomorphic surfaces given the evolutionary characteristics from climatic, morphogenetic and pedogenetic factors. This work aims to demonstrate the compartmentalization and association of geomorphic surfaces covered by ferruginous duricrusts in Savannah areas in Brazil according to a relief dissection matrix. This matrix indicates the vertical cutting of the valleys and the interfluvial horizontal dimension of the hills through landform measurements in radar images, classification in alphanumeric codes and statistical correlations. The results indicated details in the compartmentalization of the surface according to the landform roughness, making it possible to link, through data from the dissection matrix and the statistical correlation, the association between the compartments according to summit positions and remaining depressed areas. Despite the fact that more robust measurements obtained from high-precision mappings can point out further landform evolutionary stages, it is understood that a dissection matrix and its statistical correlations can not only compartmentalize the landscape and provide an initial overview of the landscape’s evolution, but also indicate geomorphic surfaces that could have been worked at the same time. In this sense, the recognition of geomorphic surfaces, occurrence of duricrusts and landforms in this work allowed a certain morphogenetic correspondence that can contribute to geomorphological studies, although the results must be observed with caution when verified from the tropical perspective of relief evolution. This study aims to examine the patterns of climatic variables and delineate climatically homogeneous regions among Brazilian capitals using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and clustering techniques. Annual climate data from 26 state capitals and the Federal District of Brazil were analyzed, covering the period from 1958 to 2022, representing different regions of the country. The PCA results revealed that the first three principal components accounted for 91.8% of the total data variability. Four climatically homogeneous regions were identified: the East region, the Northeast region, the North region and another region that comprises the rest of the country. Cluster Analysis (CA) also confirmed the formation of four homogeneous groups among municipalities based on climatic variables. The analysis of spatial distribution showed significant variations in annual climate variables between Brazilian capitals, with maximum values observed for maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation, wind speed, relative humidity, evapotranspiration and soil moisture. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of climate variability in Brazilian capitals and provide a basis for future studies on climate dynamics and regional impacts. The main aim of this research is to identify the main tourism public policies in Mozambique and to reflect on their role and applicability in reducing poverty in vulnerable communities, essentially to understand how they are implemented and what their level of applicability is. Methodologically, bibliographical and documentary research was applied; this is qualitative research and for data analysis we opted for content analysis to encompass the content presented in the various sources that represent tourism public policies and their role in alleviating poverty and promoting development. The main public policies analyzed were the Tourism Law, Tourism Policy and the Strategic Plan for Tourism Development (1st and 2nd). Regarding the policies consulted, it can be said that Mozambique has good public policies and the main ones adopt tourism as a factor in alleviating poverty and promoting development, but there is little empirical evidence that these objectives are being implemented on a large scale and effectively, as the participatory process and involvement of local communities in their design and implementation leaves something to be desired. Trade has always been a traditional topic of study in geography, present in different approaches. In this work, commerce is interpreted from the perspective of technique, approaching the technical phenomenon geographically, that is, through the geographical milieu and its manifestations. This article aims to propose an interpretation of trade through geography from the category of geographical milieu. Based on Milton Santos' proposal for the periodization of geographical space, we relate the natural milieu and exchanges, the technical milieu and traditional commerce, reaching the current period with the emergence of the technical-scientific-informational milieu and its corresponding form of commerce, the e-commerce. This study examines the evolution of areas surrounding the bat caves in the Ferruginous Geosystem of Carajás from 1985 to 2022, emphasising the significance of geodiversity conservation in this unique context. The land use and cover transformations analysis reveals critical insights into spatio-temporal changes and escalating environmental degradation risks. The findings enhance the literature on geodiversity conservation and speleology, providing a solid foundation for future research. Monitoring mined areas and their ecological impacts is essential for refining management strategies for these sensitive ecosystems. Furthermore, recent attempts to amend cave protection legislation, particularly Decree 10.935, pose significant conservation challenges, necessitating a critical evaluation of environmental policies and fostering dialogue among researchers, policymakers, and the mining industry. This study highlights the urgent need for a balanced approach between resource extraction and environmental conservation to mitigate adverse impacts on biodiversity and ecological processes. Integrated and evidence-based environmental management is crucial for addressing the challenges of mining activities and regulatory changes, ensuring the protection of caves and their ecosystems for a sustainable future.
he rapid global loss of biodiversity has promoted initiatives to develop a global network of Protected Areas (PAs), with the Aichi targets suggesting that countries protect at least 17% of continental areas and 10% of marine and coastal areas. For Brazil, there is a knowledge gap regarding the evaluation of qualitative and quantitative objectives through practical indicators of goal achievement and effective management. This study holistically addresses the conservation status of Brazil concerning Aichi Target 11 for marine and coastal ecosystems, using systematic literature review and marine spatial coverage analysis. The results show an increase to 26% of marine spatial coverage, with greater coverage by Environmental Protection Areas. There is a predominance of studies on "Management Effectiveness," with less focus on equitable management and integration between terrestrial and marine landscapes. Indicators primarily focus on "Ecological" and "Governance" dimensions, neglecting "Social" and "Economic" dimensions. Key challenges include the need for increased financial investment, connectivity between protected areas with different social and ecological contexts, and local community involvement in equitable management. Additionally, there is a need for increased coverage of integral protection areas and standardization of qualitative assessments.
