
Purpose The integration of artificial intelligence in workplaces is rapidly transforming employment structures, skill requirements, and decision-making processes. This study examines how AI-mediated workplaces (AI-MWP) impact STEM trainees entering the workforce. Specifically, it explores their preparedness, the challenges and opportunities presented by AI-MWP, and the role of socio-digital skills in shaping their career trajectories. Design/methodology/approach This study employs a socio-technical systems (STS) approach to analyze the experiences of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) interns. Using qualitative research methods, including interviews and case studies, we investigate how AI-MWP influence information sharing, task allocation, workplace interactions and the professional development of recent graduates. Findings The findings highlight that AI-MWP introduce new challenges for STEM trainees, particularly in navigating socio-digital skills, workplace autonomy and task ownership. AI-mediated communication reduces informal learning opportunities, impacting trainees' ability to develop professional networks and contextual understanding. Revealing a growing gap in employability frameworks that fail to address the evolving socio-technical demands of modern work, the study also underscores the necessity of digital fluency, adaptability and interdisciplinary collaboration as essential competencies for thriving in AI-MWP. Originality/value This study extends STS thinking into the AI-mediated work domain, offering new insights into how digital transformation reshapes employment dynamics. By identifying socio-digital skills as a critical yet overlooked component, we provide actionable recommendations for STEM educators and employers to improve training strategies and bridge the gap between academic preparation and AI-MWP.
PurposeThe study aims to examine the correlates of work-related social media use. Specifically, it investigates the role of work-related social media use (WRSMU) and frequency of social media use (FSMU) in the relationship between workplace fear of missing out (FoMO), organizational support, innovative performance, and routine performance at the workplace.Design/methodology/approachA sample of 245 employees from India working in various organizations. The data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).FindingsThe findings indicate that work-related social media use has a positive and significant association with innovative and routine performance. Additionally, organizational support is positively and significantly associated with work-related social media use and performance. Workplace fear of missing out is positively associated with work-related social media use, but not with performance. The mediation analysis showed that work-related social media use mediates between workplace FoMO and performance, and organizational support and performance. Furthermore, moderation analysis revealed that the frequency of social media use moderates between work-related social media use and innovative performance.Originality/valueThis study's findings provide new insights into the impact of social media use on individual and organizational functioning. This study demonstrates this impact and contributes to the existing literature on the social and cultural impacts of information technology.
Purpose-This paper aims to explore the initial formation of organizing visions within digital platforms regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in education. It examines how these emerging visions align with official guidelines. Understanding the early development of these organizing visions and the consensus formation around official guidelines for GAI in education has significant research and practical implications. Design/methodology/approach-The present study uses a multimethodological approach with qualitative content-coding and inductive thematic analysis of digital trace data from the social media platform X and deductive thematic analysis of guideline documents. It first examines organizing visions within digital platforms through 1,260 tweets, focusing on opportunities and challenges posed by GAI, particularly ChatGPT, in educational settings. The study then analyses practical guidelines from international organizations, governments, and universities. Findings-The empirical findings demonstrate that, although all three Organizing Vision (OV) functions are present in the early development of OVs for GAI in education, early-stage online discourse predominantly emphasizes the legitimation function. The findings also indicate a noticeable alignment between the topics discussed in the early development of OVs for GAI in education and the official guidelines and policies issued by international organizations, governments, and universities worldwide, indicating the need for educational reform, and ethical considerations. Originality/value-This study contributes to the existing literature on the emergence of OVs in digital platforms by examining the context of GAI in education. This study also provides insights into the collective stance and recommendations from various authoritative sources, offering a comprehensive perspective on early-stage GAI policy development in an educational context.
Purpose-The study investigates how limitations within creativity support systems (CSS) can enhance virtual team collaboration and creativity. Recognizing the challenge of technological overload due to CSS's increasing features and functionalities, the research aims to show how strategic constraints can foster rather than hinder creative processes. Design/methodology/approach-Adopting a design science research (DSR) methodology, this study synthesizes kernel theories and insights from expert interviews to develop 11 meta-requirements and five design principles for constraint-based CSS. These principles were then tested through a series of real-world experiments to evaluate their effectiveness and refine them based on empirical results. Findings-The findings reveal that implementing constraints in CSS can significantly boost radical creativity, adaptation and activity in virtual teams. It also helps reduce cognitive overload, feature fatigue and topic drift, thereby enhancing the efficiency of creative collaboration across different phases. Each design principle was empirically validated and refined, underscoring the benefits of constraint-based approaches in managing feature-rich environments. Originality/value-This research contributes to the understanding of how constraints can be systematically designed and applied in CSS to promote creativity. By empirically testing and refining design principles for constraint implementation, the study offers a novel perspective on balancing functionality and simplicity to optimize creative collaboration in virtual settings.
PurposeSocial media (SM) provides a range of positive and negative benefits to users, and an SM detox has been suggested as a way to deal with its negative effects. Instagram (IG) is one of Generation Y's most widely used SM platforms, noted for its addictive potential. Using a journey perspective, the purpose of this research is to map and describe the experiences in the various stages of a detox journey among Generation Y IG users.Design/methodology/approachUsing an inductive and qualitative approach, empirical data were collected over the stages of the journey using focus groups, self-completion diaries and interviews. The data were coded, analysed and interpreted using thematic analysis.FindingsThe findings of the study show two main motivations for undertaking a detox, namely gaining back control and self-reformation. During the detox, five themes were identified, specifically mood and satisfaction, technological craving, mental well-being, physical well-being and social relationships. Three post-detox behaviours were noted, namely the boomerang effect, conscious consumption and a re-evaluation towards the platform, which impacts future IG use.Research limitations/implicationsBy following one group of participants throughout an IG detox journey, the study highlights the detox experiences in each journey stage.Practical implicationsThe positive benefits of a detox were experienced by the participants, encouraging future detox and actions by platforms to aid in future detoxes.Originality/valueThis study accompanies one group of participants throughout their detox journey. This enabled the researchers to obtain insights into the detox experience in all phases of the journey. This was undertaken using diverse qualitative methods.
PurposeWhile considerable attention has been directed towards identifying antecedents and consequences of technostress in various contexts, research is lagging on its mitigation, especially in personal use contexts. Here, we explain how individuals employ coping to shield their humanistic and instrumental goals from technostress-related hindrances in personal smartphone use. As individuals' goals can be considered pivotal in shaping their lives as worthwhile, identifying solutions for managing the negative consequences of technostress on, for instance, users' well-being and productivity, is paramount. By focusing on smartphones, which are used by billions, we provide impactful insight relevant for numerous stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachWe conducted qualitative research by collecting and analyzing rich data (semi-structured interviews) from 38 smartphone users.FindingsBy investigating coping with smartphone-related technostress that manifests as hindrances to users' humanistic (e.g. attaining meaningful life) and instrumental (e.g. managing personal information) goals and their sub-goals (e.g. experiencing happiness and maintaining information security, respectively), we address the multidimensional and hierarchical nature of goals. We further extend this perspective by examining how coping relates to goal explicitness: anticipatory coping tends to prevail when goals are explicit, while reactive coping is more common with implicit goals. Additionally, we showed that users' goals, technostress, and the associated coping can be in conflict, requiring goal prioritization from users.Originality/valueWe address an important gap in the literature by examining the intricate dynamics of coping with the unintended outcomes of personal smartphone use manifesting as technostress-related hindrances to users' goals.
PurposeDigital transformation is a complex and continuous process that presents significant challenges for companies and employees. Employee resistance, a factor often cited for the failure of digital initiatives, hinders these initiatives and contributes to stress, affecting employee well-being - a connection not yet fully explored in extant literature. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the factors that increase employee resistance to digital transformation and how it can be mitigated.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts a multiple case study approach to analyze qualitative data from ten industrial companies in Finland.FindingsFactors influencing resistance at the individual, organizational, and technological levels were identified, and three key components of the resistance mitigation strategy from the case companies were identified: learning, communication and participation. The findings, supported by relevant literature, link resistance to employee well-being and propose that the identified mitigation strategy reduces resistance and supports employee well-being during digital transformation.Practical implicationsThis study provides practical implications and suggests avenues for future studies to examine this unsaturated yet important research area.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to empirically examine employee resistance in digital transformation and link it to employee well-being.
Purpose The use of perceptual and objective measures in information systems is an ongoing discussion in IS research, primarily due to different conceptions about objective measures. This research, therefore, empirically tests truly objective measures along with perceptual measures to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the role of perceptual and objective independent variables as predictors of user satisfaction and continuance intention. Design/methodology/approach This paper developed an integrated research model that examines perceptual and objective measures as predictors of satisfaction and continuance intention. The approach was then empirically tested with survey-based perceptual variables and corresponding objective variables in the context of a mobile network operator ( n = 998). Specifically, we used serial mediation analysis with PROCESS to test our hypotheses. Findings The results showed that the different objective variables show insignificance as predictors of satisfaction and continuance intention, contrasting with previous research calling for objective measures. Originality/value Our results contribute to IS literature by indicating that perceptual measures are superior to objective measures in predictive relevance. Hence the “silent acceptance” of potential conceptual weaknesses is indeed justified by the results of this research.
PurposeThis study explores digital risk perceptions - the perception of risk related to digital environments - among older adults. Specifically, it investigates how these risk perceptions influence older adults' frequency of digital engagement in everyday activities.Design/methodology/approachThe research methodology involved conducting 22 interviews and administering 708 surveys among older adults living at home. The researchers examined how digital risk perceptions influenced older adults' frequency of engagement in everyday digital activities. The study also explored the mediating role of digital risk perceptions in the relationship between older adults' digital competencies and the frequency of everyday digital engagement.FindingsThe study identified six distinct categories of digital risk perceptions among older adults. Furthermore, it found that older adults' digital competencies significantly impacted the frequency of everyday digital engagement. However, certain digital risk perceptions, particularly those related to privacy and security concerns and concerns about financial impact, mediated the relationship between digital competencies and the frequency of everyday digital engagement. Older adults' frequency of participating in digital activities was influenced by perceptions of risk, highlighting the complex interplay between digital competencies and digital risk perception in shaping older adults' engagement with everyday digital activities.Originality/valueThis study contributes to understanding older adults' engagement in everyday digital activities by delineating six specific categories of digital risk perceptions. By identifying the mediating role of digital risk perceptions, particularly regarding privacy, security and financial concerns, the study sheds light on the nuanced factors influencing older adults' willingness to participate digitally, which adds nuance and extends knowledge on digital and social inclusion among older adults.
PurposeMost prior studies have primarily investigated AI adoption, with less attention given to AI assimilation in human resource management (HRM). Additionally, prior studies often lack empirical verification of the extent to which human-AI collaboration might alleviate challenges and promote AI assimilation in the HRM context. Thus, this study aims to explore AI assimilation in recruitment with a balanced view that identifies both enabling and inhibiting factors while examining the role of human-AI collaboration in mitigating the effects of inhibiting factors.Design/methodology/approachWe used a mixed-method approach. Using an open-ended survey questionnaire approach and collecting data from 26 HR professionals, we identified five factors, namely, AI competency, recruitment agility, AI opacity, AI empathy and human-AI collaboration, potentially impacting AI assimilation. Thereafter, drawing from the enabler-inhibitor perspective, we theorize that AI competency and recruitment agility are the enablers, whereas AI opacity and AI empathy are the inhibitors of an organization's efforts to assimilate AI in recruitment practices. We tested our proposed model by collecting data from 309 HR professionals.FindingsThe findings showed that both enablers, AI competency and recruitment agility, significantly influence AI assimilation; however, both inhibitors, AI opacity and AI empathy, are non-significant for AI assimilation. While looking into the reasons for these non-significant effects, we observed that the interaction term between AI empathy and human-AI-collaboration as well as between AI opacity and human-AI-collaboration both had significant effects on AI assimilation. These interaction effects suggest that human-AI collaboration mitigates the constraining impact of both inhibitors.Originality/valueDrawing from the enabler-inhibitor perspective and by empirically testing our proposed model, this paper significantly contributes to the IS literature. Our study not only identifies factors that promote and inhibit AI assimilation in the context of HRM practices but also reveals how human-AI collaboration may mitigate the effects of inhibitors. Our findings suggest that organizations should have a collaborative recruitment environment where AI handles repetitive tasks, and humans focus on roles requiring emotional intelligence. This approach enhances the integration of AI-powered tools, addresses AI assimilation inhibitors and optimizes recruitment effectiveness.
PurposeIn Nordic societies, the use of mobile phones for record-keeping during homecare visits has become an unquestioned routine. Care practitioners' agency with these technologies has been explored mainly as a situationally constrained activity, neglecting their long-term orientations. Our empirical contribution is to explore care practitioners' agentic relations to technology in a more nuanced way by including both dimensions. The theoretical contribution is to show synergy between temporal conceptualizations in theories of human agency and technology-in-practice, which highlight human agency as deliberation between situational and long-term temporal orientations.Design/methodology/approachSeven Finnish care practitioners were interviewed, and their entire work shifts were observed, consisting altogether 48 video-recorded homecare visits. The analysis of the ethnographic material was focused on situational and long-term temporal orientations of the care practitioners related to technologizing care.FindingsCare practitioners in old age care approached technology use with three different kinds of temporal orientations: adapting - preferring to remain in the present; opposing - longing for the past; and engaging - viewing the technologization of old age care as positive for the future.Practical implicationsThe situational usability of technology is not the only problem to be solved when technology is adopted for human-centred care; longer-term visions of how care and care work will change should also be voiced in healthcare organizations.Originality/valueTemporal orientations may explain how and why care practitioners either just adapt to technology-use in care or act as change agents transforming both technologies and care.
PurposeThe health and survival of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) are of paramount concern to stakeholders. It is essential to understand the usage behaviors of exploitative and exploratory strategies. By combining the typical user experience with psychological mechanisms in MMOGs, this study is devoted to clarifying how technology affordance and digital perfectionistic intention influence reinforcement and variety-seeking orientations of MMOGs use.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a sequential triangulation mixed-methods design to explore how diverse usage behaviors of reinforced and varied use in MMOGs are formed. After proposing the theoretical framework from MMOGs affordance, perfectionistic intentions, and diverse use, empirical evidence was initially collected from representative samples through a survey. Qualitative interviews from players in MMOGs and game industry practitioners are conducted to confirm the results, supplement understanding, and gather insights from diverse backgrounds. The quantitative and qualitative inferences are discussed to validate the research focus.FindingsFindings from various perspectives suggest that perfectionistic intentions are critical antecedents of different usage behaviors influenced by affordances provided in MMOGs. Goal-driven affordance with reward and competition, interaction affordance, and identity affordance are key MMOGs affordances and could affect perfectionistic intentions differently. People with different perfectionistic intentions, which are the psychological outcome of MMOGs affordances, possess diverse usage behaviors.Originality/valueThis study is the first to consider diverse usage behaviors in virtual worlds such as MMOGs by combining lenses of perfectionistic intentions and technology affordance. Findings from mixed-methods analysis significantly enrich the research on online game usage behavior, offering valuable theoretical and practical implications for studying usage behaviors within the virtual world.
PurposeThis study aims to explore whether seeking recommendations for doctors from offline word-of-mouth or online reviews influences patient satisfaction after treatment, and how the source of recommendation affects this effect.Design/methodology/approachUsing a unique dataset of more than three million reviews from a popular Chinese online health community, this study used the coarsened exact matching method and built fixed-effect models to conduct empirical analysis.FindingsThe results suggest that selecting doctors according to recommendations can improve patient satisfaction and mitigate their dissatisfaction when encountering service failures. However, online recommendations were found to be less effective than offline sources in improving patient satisfaction.Originality/valueThis study provides important insights into patient satisfaction and doctor-patient relationships by revealing the antecedents of satisfaction and the potential for improving this relationship. It also contributes to the understanding of how recommendations in the healthcare context can improve patient satisfaction and alleviate the negative impact of service failures.
PurposeAlgorithmic monitoring has been widely applied to the practice of platform economy as a management means. Despite its benefits, negative effects of algorithmic monitoring are gradually emerging.Design/methodology/approachBased on moral disengagement theory, this research aims to investigate how algorithmic monitoring might affect gig workers' attitudes and behaviors. Specifically, we explored the effect of algorithmic monitoring on gig workers' unethical behavior. A three-wave survey was conducted online, and the sample consisted of 318 responses from Chinese gig workers.FindingsThe results revealed that algorithmic monitoring positively affected unethical behavior through displacement of responsibility, and the individualistic orientation of gig workers moderated this relationship. However, the relationship between moral justification and algorithmic monitoring was not significant.Originality/valueThis research contributes to the algorithmic monitoring literature and examines its impact on gig workers' unethical behavior. By revealing the underlying mechanism and boundary conditions, this research furthers our understanding of the negative influences of algorithmic monitoring and provides practical implications.
PurposePeople are often recognized as the weakest part of thwarting phishing attacks. The goal of preventing phishing can conflict with the goal of keeping a good level of productivity in daily work; however, we still lack an understanding of this multigoal scenario. This paper aims to develop and test a new model of antiphishing performance, especially in relation to individuals' task performance in daily work. Drawing on the extended multiple-goal pursuit model (MGPM*), we examined the relationship between task performance at a time point and the subsequent antiphishing performance as well as how this relationship differs across varying types of phishing emails and attention levels to phishing cues.Design/methodology/approachWe tested the model by conducting a field experiment with a survey questionnaire. Four legitimate work emails and four phishing emails (consisting of two work-related and two work-unrelated emails) were sent to 357 participants. The data were analyzed using generalized estimating equations.FindingsThe results indicate that task performance at a time point has a curvilinear relationship with subsequent antiphishing performance. This relationship is moderated by the types of phishing emails and individuals' attention to phishing cues. For work-related phishing emails, task performance is negatively associated with antiphishing performance when it reaches an intermediate level; however, when task performance is low, or high to an extent, it is positively related to antiphishing performance. For work-unrelated phishing emails, there is a positive association between task performance and antiphishing performance. Moreover, attention to phishing cues moderates the curvilinear relationship between task performance and antiphishing performance such that when task performance reaches an intermediate level, as attention to phishing cues increases, the relationship between task performance and antiphishing performance will turn from negative to positive.Practical implicationsThis paper has practical implications that bear on the conflict between antiphishing performance and task performance.Originality/valueThis paper sheds light on the potential of the extended multiple-goal pursuit model in studying antiphishing behavior.
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to enhance the understanding of the drivers of participation in online business forums (OBFs). Specifically, it examines how reciprocity and three distinct types of needs (functional, psychological and hedonic) shape the participation behaviour of members in OBFs.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a multilevel analysis, integrating Social Exchange Theory and Uses and Gratification Theory to develop and validate a research framework. Data were collected via online questionnaires (N = 596) from 48 business forums on LinkedIn. The data analysis was carried out using PLS-SEM in stages. A confirmatory factor analysis was carried out to assess the measurement model, including validating the reliability and validity of the measurement items. The direct hypotheses were tested, followed by a post ad-hoc analysis to test the mediation and moderation hypotheses.FindingsThis study shows the impact of three need factors - functional, psychological and hedonic - and reciprocity on community members' participation behaviour in OBFs. The findings indicate that fulfiling functional, psychological and hedonic needs are key determinants driving active participation. The study further highlights the coexistence of two types of reciprocity: direct and indirect. However, the data analysis results show that only indirect reciprocity motivates participation in OBFs. Furthermore, the study reveals that indirect reciprocity not only precedes participation but also acts as a pivotal factor interacting with the interrelationship between the need factors and participation levels in OBFs.Originality/valueThis research advances theoretical understanding of participation in OBFs by offering novel insights into its complex, multi-faceted nature. Unlike some previous simplistic models, this study employs innovative multilevel analysis, uniquely demonstrating the synergistic impact of need factors and reciprocity on participation. It offers a nuanced perspective previously unexplored by addressing reciprocity's paradoxical role and uncovering interconnections between various factors. This approach provides groundbreaking insights into OBF dynamics, advancing theoretical understanding while offering actionable strategies for enhancing member engagement and community development.
PurposeCredible influencers play a key role in shaping the views and preferences of social media users. However, many influencers intentionally use disinformation (e.g. false narratives) to deceive users and gain their trust. This can have serious repercussions, not only for the firms that associate with these influencers but also for users. Further, and alarmingly, many influencers who use disinformation can sustain their credibility over time. This research explores how influencers use disinformation to establish long-term credibility on social media.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on self-presentation theory, we use an in-depth qualitative case study to address our research question, primarily relying on archival data obtained from multiple sources.FindingsOur findings suggest that three stages of self-presentation are required to establish influencer credibility based on disinformation: backstage (preparing to deceive), experimentation (testing deception), and frontstage (launching deceptive ideas on a large scale). We also find that when fraudulent influencers simultaneously weaponise a counterculture and mindfully encase disinformation, users view them as highly credible.Practical implicationsWe offer practical suggestions for regulating fraudulent influencers, including enacting fact-checking procedures, using IT artefacts as reliability signals, and building awareness programmes to develop vigilance in social media communities.Originality/valueWe contribute to self-presentation theory by adding experimentation as a critical stage in developing disinformation that works for long periods. We also contribute to the literature at the intersection of social media influencers and disinformation research by revealing why social media users believe in fraudulent influencers.
Purpose The emergence of cryptocurrency has developed a new payment system that is changing how financial transactions happen in hospitality. Consumers/travelers have started experimenting with cryptocurrency payments in hotels and restaurants. However, extant research is lacking in understanding the consumer adoption intention of cryptocurrency payments. This study investigates the intention to use cryptocurrency payments in the hospitality industry.Design/methodology/approach The conceptual model in this study is based on the Behavioral Reasoning Theory, and it explores the motivating and deterring factors influencing the adoption of cryptocurrency payments in the hospitality industry. A quantitative survey was conducted among 1,080 consumers to examine and confirm the model, with data being analyzed through the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method.FindingsThe outcome of this work showed that the “reasons for” positively influence and “reasons against” negatively influence consumers’ attitudes and use intentions. Consumers’ values of openness to change positively influence the “reasons for” and do not influence the “reasons against” and attitude toward the use of cryptocurrency payments.Practical implicationsThis work contributes to practice by providing insights to customers (users/payee), hospitality managers (investors) and organizations/firms (receiving crypto payments) as well as to financial firms and the government.Originality/value This research contributes to cryptocurrency payment adoption and behavioral finance literature. The research uniquely provides the adoption and inhibiting factors for cryptocurrency payment in an integrated framework in the hospitality sector.
PurposeRecently, short-form video apps, as a new form of social media, have attracted users and rapidly emerged by virtue of their personalized recommendation algorithms, interesting forms of live interaction, and diverse interactive functions, which may lead to excessive use. From the perspective of IT affordances, this study combines the cognitive-affective-behavioral model and perceived values theory to examine the formation mechanism of the excessive use of short-form video apps.Design/methodology/approachWe surveyed a total of 351 users who have used Tiktok, a typical short-form video app, and used their questionnaires to test the research model.FindingsSearching affordance has a positive impact on perceived information value and perceived entertainment value. Furthermore, meta-voicing, recommending, and livestreaming affordance have a positive impact on perceived information value, perceived entertainment value, and perceived social networking value, which also have a positive impact on negative affect anticipation. In addition, negative affect anticipation is significantly positively correlated with excessive use.Originality/valueIn terms of theory, this study introduces the theory of IT affordances and perceived values into the cognitive-affective-behavioral model, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time. Furthermore, it conducts situational research on the formation mechanism of excessive use of short-form video apps and makes up for the lack of studying of excessive use behavior from the perspective of technical factors.
PurposeWith the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in everyday life, it is critical to discuss how and why consumers respond in certain ways to AI agents. However, few studies have examined the mechanisms underlying users’ responses to these agents. This study aims to identify such mechanisms and discuss how users form loyalty toward AI agents. Specifically, this study addresses interactivity with AI voice assistants as a key determinant of user loyalty, presenting user perceptions of the human-likeness of AI voice assistants and communication self-efficacy as sequential mediators.Design/methodology/approachWe investigate the effects of human-likeness and communication self-efficacy on the relationship between interactivity and loyalty to AI voice assistants by developing a sequential mediation model. To estimate the empirical model, data were collected through an online survey with 330 respondents.FindingsThe results indicate that interactivity influences loyalty directly and positively.
