Consumer loyalty toward AI speakers is formed by complex interactions of multiple factors rather than a single cause. Based on complexity theory, this study explores how AI speaker features (anthropomorphism, interactivity) and consumer characteristics (relationship preference, age, gender) combine to generate high loyalty intentions. Applying fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) with survey data from 330 consumers, we identify five configurations leading to high loyalty. Notably, low emotional anthropomorphism, high interactivity, and a preference for a secretarial relationship emerge as key drivers. This study provides a new perspective on explaining consumer loyalty formation toward AI speakers, going beyond a traditional approach.
PurposeWith the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in everyday life, it is critical to discuss how and why consumers respond in certain ways to AI agents. However, few studies have examined the mechanisms underlying users’ responses to these agents. This study aims to identify such mechanisms and discuss how users form loyalty toward AI agents. Specifically, this study addresses interactivity with AI voice assistants as a key determinant of user loyalty, presenting user perceptions of the human-likeness of AI voice assistants and communication self-efficacy as sequential mediators.Design/methodology/approachWe investigate the effects of human-likeness and communication self-efficacy on the relationship between interactivity and loyalty to AI voice assistants by developing a sequential mediation model. To estimate the empirical model, data were collected through an online survey with 330 respondents.FindingsThe results indicate that interactivity influences loyalty directly and positively. In addition, interactivity affects loyalty indirectly sequentially through human-likeness and communication self-efficacy.Originality/valueBy uncovering the psychological mechanisms underlying users’ loyalty to AI voice assistants, this study provides new academic and managerial insights that have not been clearly identified in the current literature.
PurposeCorporate hypocrisy occurs when a discrepancy exists between corporate talk and actions. As companies assume more extensive economic, societal and global roles, they are more likely to encounter situations in which their words and actions are inconsistent. Therefore, a company's ability to cope with such situations is becoming increasingly important. This study aims to examine the negative effects of corporate hypocrisy on corporate reputation. First, it reveals the underlying mechanisms by presenting corporate trust and affective commitment as parallel mediators. Additionally, it explores how corporate social responsibility (CSR) perceptions mitigate the indirect effects of corporate hypocrisy.Design/methodology/approachData were collected through an online survey conducted at two time points in the context of Korean retail banking companies. A total of 313 respondents participated in a two-wave online survey using a multistage sampling technique to ensure a representative population sample. This study used the Mplus-based Hayes' PROCESS Macro to test the research hypotheses.FindingsThe results show that corporate hypocrisy negatively affects corporate reputation by impeding customers' corporate trust and affective commitment. These negative indirect effects are mitigated when customers' perceptions of CSR are high.Originality/valueBy establishing a parallel moderated mediation model that captures the impact of corporate hypocrisy. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study presents important academic and managerial implications that have not been provided in the literature.
There has been a consensus that the material values are globally growing among young generations, which may harm the environment. In the mist of little empirical efforts about how to motivate consumers to move away from such materialistic consumption, a few recent studies of flow experience and happiness help us shed lights on this issue. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a high level of flow experience influences their subjective well-beings (e.g., life satisfaction, self-esteem), which lead to elevate their pro-social attitudes and behaviors. This study set fandom as the context of consumers’ immersion experiences, particularly focusing on BTS ARMY, one of the most committed fandom in the world. A survey results revealed that a high flow experience more enhanced subjective well-beings, pro-social attitudes, and behaviors than a low flow in general. The interaction effects between flow experience and fandom on self-esteem, pro-social attitudes, and behaviors were also significant. The results imply the benefit of having high flow experiences from being away from the material consumption while focusing on fans
Purpose Although there are at least two important characteristics of targeted promotions—promotion individualization (i.e. whether the offer is personalized for the recipient) and notification exclusivity (i.e. how small the number of recipients is)—most previous studies on targeted promotion have conceptualized them synonymously. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of targeted promotion on consumer purchases by conceptualizing these separately and incorporating them in a single model. Also, this study explores how the effects of these differ depending on customer loyalty. We particularly examine the promotional responses of extremely loyal customers, distinguishing them from other loyal customers. Design/methodology/approach Using actual customer purchase data, we develop a two-stage model of the consumer decision-making process involving decisions of whether and how much to purchase. The two characteristics of targeted promotions—promotion individualization and notification exclusivity—first influence the probability of purchase and then the purchase amount given purchase. Findings The results show that customers respond positively to individualization and exclusivity. The effect of individualization is reduced as customer loyalty increases from loyal customers to extremely loyal customers while that of exclusivity remains the same. Originality/value By clearly identifying the two characteristics of targeted promotions and developing an empirical model that captures the effects of these separately, this paper provides new academic and managerial insights that were not clearly identified in the current literature.
This study investigates the mediating role of affective commitment in the link between perceptions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the intention to participate in CSR activities. We also examine the moderating role of firms' brand equity and corporate reputation in the relationship between perceived CSR and affective commitment. The data were collected from two online surveys and analyzed using Hayes' PROCESS macro. The results indicate a partial mediating effect of affective commitment and a significant moderating effect of brand equity. However, the moderating effect of corporate reputation is not significant. This study contributes to uncovering the process of enhancing CSR performance.
This study investigates how affects elicited by visual images in print ads are integrated to form a liking for the ads. Assuming a sequential rather than simultaneous processing of still-cut images, we adopt the ‘think-aloud’ method to capture consumers’ spontaneous responses to visual images. We hypothesize that not only would consumers show mixed affects toward a still-cut visual image but that they would also integrate their serial affects heuristically rather than simply averaging the affects as suggested by the compensatory hypothesis. By comparing the effects of two contradictory affect integration hypotheses (i.e., peak-affect and mood-maintenance) with compensatory integration, using a single regression model, we found that peak-negative along with mood maintenance integration of serial affects for a print ad works best in the formation of ad liking. The results also support our initial premise that people can have mixed valence even toward a still-cut ad.
