
Background: Uterus Didelphys is one of the rare cases of uterine abnormalities that is mostly asymptomatic until pregnancy and delivery. The present report introduces a case of a double uterus with a separate cervix and a common vagina (Uterus Didelphys). Materials and Methods: The patient was a 38-year-old woman referred to a radiology clinic by a gynecologist. She was pregnant at the time; however, she had a history of repeated miscarriages, irregular and painful menstruation, prolonged bleeding, and spotting. The evaluation of radiological images with hysterosalpingography showed that this patient had a double uterus with a separate cervix and a common vagina (Uterus Didelphys). Conclusion: Müllerian duct abnormalities are among the most important factors of infertility in women, whose accurate diagnosis and right treatment can help to maintain fertility. The use of imaging methods can also help in the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment of these people.
Background: Multiple sclerosis disease (MS) is progressing, especially in women. The present study aimed to determine the effect of eight weeks of resistance training with two types of linear and nonlinear periodized on muscle strength, fatigue, and quality of life in women with MS. Materials and Methods: A total of 19 patients with MS were selected and randomly assigned to three groups: nonlinear periodized (NLP) (n=6), linear periodized (LP) (n=5), and control (n=8). Both exercise groups performed resistance exercises three sessions a week for 30-45 minutes per session, with an intensity of 30%-70% of a maximum repetition for eight weeks. The linear group (LP) used a linear loading pattern per week. In contrast, the nonlinear group (NLP) experienced different intensities of training from the fourth week onwards. Two days before and after the training protocol, muscle strength was measured indirectly. Moreover, fatigue was evaluated with a 5-item Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS-5) and quality of life with a 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The results were analyzed in SPSS software (version 21) using the analysis of the covariance model and Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) post hoc test. Results: Based on the results, LP and NLP training led to a marked increase in muscular strength )P<0.001) and a significant decrease in fatigue )P=0.020) in MS patients. Nonetheless, no significant difference was observed in the quality of life between research groups )P=0/092). There were no significant differences between LP and NLP in factors, except leg press )P<0/001). Conclusion: As evidenced by the obtained results, both LP and NLP training models increased muscle strength and reduced fatigue. Nevertheless, linear resistance training led to greater improvement in the aforementioned factors.
Background: Natural Organic Matters (NOMs) are pollutants that exist in many drinking water resources, cause many problems in drinking water treatment processes, and have adverse effects on human health. For this reason, these substances must be removed from drinking water via a proper method. Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are novel adsorbents that have been widely considered in recent years. In this study, Uio-66 functionalized with NH2 was synthesized and applied for humic acid adsorption (as a natural organic matter) removal from water. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted in a batch reactor and on a laboratory scale. Firstly, the characteristics of the synthesized adsorbent were investigated. Then, the effect of different parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration of humic acid on adsorption process was also investigated. Additionally, isotherms and kinetics of humic acid adsorption on Uio-66-NH2 adsorbent were determined. The data analysis and isotherms comparisons were conducted using linear regression and determination coefficient. Results: In this study, the analysis confirmed the structure and properties of the fabricated nanoparticles. The adsorbent surface area was 673.4 m2/g. The results also showed that the optimal pH for adsorption of humic acid was in the range of 5 to 7, the optimal dose of adsorbent was 0.8 g/L, and the maximum adsorption of humic acid was 2.2 mg/g of adsorbent. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present research, humic acid adsorption isotherm on the adsorbent was in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm model and its adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The current study revealed that by optimization of the condition, the adsorbent can be used for organic matter removal.
Background: Exercise is a therapeutic procedure for addicts; however, its physiological mechanisms are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of endurance training on the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and endostatin in the heart tissue of male rats with morphine withdrawal syndrome. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was conducted on 32 male rats randomly divided into four groups of eight: healthy control (HC), endurance training (ET), morphine control (CM), and morphine+endurance training (M.ET). Two morphine withdrawal groups were addicted to 0.4 mg/ml morphine sulfate for 21 days. The exercise groups performed eight weeks of treadmill running. At the end of the study, all rats were killed, and their heart tissue was removed. Protein levels of the indicators in this study were measured by ELISA kits. The data were analyzed by Tukey’s one-way ANOVA test. Results: The results of this study showed a significant decrease in VEGF levels (P<0.001) and a significant increase in ES (P<0.001) in the MC, compared to the HC. In addition, the increase in VEGF levels (P=0.014) and the decrease in ES (P=0.026) in the M.ET showed a significant difference, compared to the MC. Conclusion: Endurance training may be useful in preventing negative changes in angiogenesis and metabolic parameters related to morphine, which should be considered in the rehabilitation of addicts.
Background: Dysfunction of mitochondria is associated with such diseases as obesity, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Training plays a major role in the improvement of mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of high-intensity interval training on some mitophagy indices in the liver tissue, including BNIP3 and NIX in type 2 diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 three-month-old adult male Wistar rats with a weight range (250-300 g) were randomly assigned to four groups of 10 series, including healthy control (C), Diabetic control (D), and diabetic+Training (D+T). The training protocol includes running with intensity at 85%-90% of maximum speed in 6-12 two-minute intervals five days a week for eight weeks. A method based on Western blotting was used to determine changes in the expression of BNIP3 and NIX proteins in the liver tissue of rats. The one-way analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post hoc test were used to analyze the data. Results: Diabetes increased BNIP3 and NIX proteins; nonetheless, it was not significant. The changes of NIX in the trained diabetic group were about 57% less than in the diabetic control group, and this difference was significant (P=0.033), while BNIP3, despite a 37% decrease, did not change significantly (P>0.05). Conclusion: Eight weeks of intense intermittent training caused a significant decrease in the expression of proteins involved in mitophagy in the training group. Nonetheless, arriving at a definite conclusion on these indicators and how they are affected by different conditions depends on conducting further studies.
Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can lead to serious complications and have adverse effects on physical and mental well-being in young people. This review aimed to investigate the prevalence of NAFLD among Iranians aged 6 to 18 years. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted by systematic review and meta-analysis methods. A detailed search was performed on various international and Iranian databases from January 2000 to January 2023. The international databases included Pubmed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science, while the Iranian databases consisted of MagIran and SID. The quality of the selected studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Overall prevalence was estimated using the random-effects model and DerSimonian and Laird criteria with a 95% confidence interval. The Q-Cochrane test and the I2 index were used to assess heterogeneity between studies. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was performed to ensure the reliability of the results. Data analysis was performed in Stata12 software. Results: Finally, 9 studies were selected for analysis, of which, 7 studies were of good quality, while 2 studies were of average quality based on the assigned scores. According to the random-effects model, the overall prevalence of NAFLD in Iranian individuals aged 6 to 18 years was 35% with a 95% confidence interval (24% to 46%). Conclusion: The results of our study revealed a high prevalence of NAFLD in Iranian individuals aged 6 to 18 years. Policymakers and healthcare planners in Iran must implement educational programs aimed at the prevention and early diagnosis of this disease.
Background: Gene transfection is a powerful tool for changing cell function, which is used for treating various diseases. Nevertheless, various studies show that despite the variety of gene transfer methods, there are significant limitations in the application of each method. The present study aimed to compare two methods of gene transfer using PEI and Lipofectamine compounds in cancer cell. Materials and Methods: In this study, Caco-2 and HCT-116 were used as target cells, and HEK-293 cells were used as control cells. For this purpose, initially, gene transfer was performed using PEI and Lipofectamine, and then their results were compared with each other based on the expression of GFP protein. Results: The results of this study showed that although gene transfer was carried out in HEK-293 cells at a favorable rate, this process was very insignificant in colorectal cells. In addition, in the meantime, some differences were observed between the amounts of gene transfer in colorectal cells, so that the amount of transfection in Caco-2 cells was lower than that of the HCT-116 cells. Conclusion: The degree of acceptance of foreign genes in cells depends on several factors, including the type and origin of the cell. Since cancer cells have undergone many genetic changes, their genetic manipulation is associated with many limitations. For this reason, it is recommended to use other methods, such as cell selection by antibiotics and preparation of stable cell lines to reach a high level of gene transfer in these cells.
Background: Strategies to increase energy expenditure are an attractive approach to reduce excess fat storage and body weight to improve metabolic health. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of endurance training combined with adenosine injection on the gene expression of UCP-1 and MAPK p38 in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of male rats fed a high-fat diet. Materials and Methods: Forty rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: 1. normal control, 2. high-fat diet (HFD) control, 3. HFD + adenosine, and 4. HFD + endurance training + adenosine. After 13 weeks of HFD, 12 weeks of endurance training on a moderate-intensity treadmill was performed. UCP-1 and MAPK p38 mRNA levels were measured by RT-PCR. Results: A significant increase in UCP-1 was observed with in HFD + endurance training + adenosine and HFD + adenosine compared to normal and HFD controls. A significant decrease in MAPK p38 was also observed with HFD + endurance training + adenosine and HFD + adenosine compared to HFD. Conclusion: Endurance training and adenosine are likely activators of UCP-1 gene expression and can be used as effective lipolytic agents in obesity. The MAPK p38 pathway increases glucose uptake by insulin and also induces oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria following a healthy diet and aerobic activity.
Background: Cervical spine trauma may be associated with neurological disorders depending on the mechanism of trauma, the cross-sectional area affected by the trauma, and the severity of the trauma;the occurence of these neurological disorders may also affect the surgical treatment prognosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the neurological prognosis after traumatic cervical spinal cord injury. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, the intended data were collected through the admission hospital records and imaging archives of Rasoul Akram Hospital during 2011-2016. The records of patients who were treated for cervical spinal cord injury in the last year were collected and then age, gender, and other variables were extracted for each patient. The data were entered into the SPSS software and the results were reported. Results: The results showed that falls (41.2%) and motorcycle accidents (54.9%) were the most common cause of trauma, andthat the lower level of the cervical spine (C3-C7) was most commonly affected. The overall prevalence of neurological lesions at the time of admission to the department room was 29.4%, and 7.8% had died during hospitalization and before surgery. Predictive factors for neurological disorders were female sex, direct trauma during fightsand trauma to the lower cervical area. Conclusion: The present results indicate that the prevalence of complications and neurologic disorders after cervical spinal cord injuries is approximately 30% and that the extent of these complications in these patients is related to gender, trauma mechanism, and cross-sectional area of the injured cervical spine.
Background: Carvacrol is a natural monoterpene phenolic compound that has biological activities with therapeutic applications, and this study aimed to investigate the apoptotic effect of Carvacrol on the human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. Materials and Methods: After the preparation and cultivation of MDA-MB-231 cells, the IC50 value of Carvacrol on the cells was evaluated by the MTT assay method, and then the induction of apoptosis in the cell line treated with different concentrations of Carvacrol was observed by DAPI staining. The qPCR method was used to check the expression levels of Bax, P53, and Bcl-2 genes at the mRNA level. The results were analyzed using GraphPad Prism 9 software. Results: The results showed that the cytotoxicity of Carvacrol against MDA-MB-231 cancer cells was dose-dependent at 24 (P=0.034) and 48 (P=0.041) hours. The IC50 of Carvacrol at 48 h was 154.2 μM. The MDA-MB-231 cells treated with Carvacrol showed induction of apoptosis from the mitochondrial pathway by increasing the expression of P53 and BAX genes and decreasing the expression of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 gene. In addition, the number of apoptotic cells with dense DNA increased significantly in the Carvacrol treatment group (P=0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that treatment of the MDA-MB-231 cell line with Carvacrol can inhibit its growth and proliferation through the induction of apoptosis from the BAX/BCL-2 pathway. Considering the significant inhibitory effect of the treatment of cells with the Carvacrol compound, it seems that there is a suitable research field for using this compound in the control and treatment of breast cancer.
Background: Brain cancer is one of the types of cancer that appears with the growth of cancer cells in the brain. In this experimental study, we investigated and compared the effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized by the green method from Aloe vera with urolithin B on U87MG cancer cells. Materials and Methods: Cerium oxide nanoparticles were produced by the green synthesis method from the Aloe vera plant and confirmed by nanoparticle size characterization tests and an FESEM microscope. The U87MG cells were obtained from Pasteur Institute of Tehran, Iran, and after passage, they were treated with cerium oxide nanoparticles and urolithin B drug for 72 h and cell colonies for 15 days. Results: The IC50 of cancer cells in the MTT test for urolithin B and cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized by green method from Aloe vera plant with urolithin B were 170 μM and 135 μM, respectively. In addition, the survival percentage results from the clonogenic test at a concentration of 30 μM for cerium oxide nanoparticles (78%), urolithin B(61%), and cerium oxide nanoparticles with urolithin B(30%), and for a concentration of 60 μM, it was 60, 42, and 16%, respectively. Conclusion: Urolithin B has a higher cytotoxic effect (170μM) than cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized by the green method from the Aloe vera plant, and when combined with cerium oxide nanoparticles, this cytotoxic effect increased more (135μM). It also reduced the survival percentage of colonies within 15 days of treatment.
Background: Diabetes is a recurrent disease defined as a result of a lack of insulin or resistance to its full capacity. The present study aimed to assess the effect of ginger-zinc oxide nanocomposites on HbA1c and fasting blood sugar (FBS) indexes in diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: In this investigation, zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized based on the sol-gel method, and ginger extract was obtained using the soxhlet method. Thereafter, the nanocomposite of nanoparticles-ginger extract was synthesized, and the nanoparticles were identified by confirmatory tests. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats with a mean weight (250±20 g) by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg body weight), and the necessary treatments were then given by gavage to the mice for 30 days. At the end of the treatment period, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fasting blood sugar (FBS) were measured from the collected blood samples. Results: The results of this research demonstrated that among all the treatments, nanocomposite extract and zinc oxide nanoparticles in low concentration (100+10 mg/kg) have a high ability to reduce blood sugar indicators (HbA1c and FBS). This ability was statistically significant compared to other treated groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: As evidenced by the results obtained, the nanocomposite of ginger extract + zinc oxide in the concentration (100 +10 mg/kg) was a suitable option for controlling and reducing blood sugar in mice. Furthermore, considering the physiological similarity, the mentioned nanocomposite is recommended as a supplement to lower blood sugar in diabetic people. Background: Studies have shown that up to 68% of infants may be infected with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in their first year of life, and almost all children are infected by the age of two. In this study, using bioinformatics analysis, the genes in the pathways related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection were examined and nominated. Materials and Methods: By referring to the GEO database, the appropriate dataset was selected for analysis. This dataset included gene expression profiles in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. Gene clusters with high and low expression were categorized. Rich databases such as Enrichr, STRING, and Panther were used for more accurate data evaluation. Finally, the candidate genes were isolated, and their protein relationship was also measured. Results: A total of 740 and 822 genes had high and low expressions, respectively. These genes can play a role in RSV infection pathways in children. The NOD-like receptor, Epstein-Barr-influenza, tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, necroptosis, and salmonella pathways are highly expressed, and the pathways of coronavirus, herpes virus, immune system deficiency, Th1 lymphocyte cell receptor, ribosome, NFKappa B, and PDL1 had low expression at checkpoints of the cell cycle. Conclusion: The present study revealed that important proteins and genes played a major role in strengthening RSV inflammation in children, among which STAT3, TLR4, RPL26A, STAT1, and MAPK4 showed a more prominent role in this pathway.
Background: The unstable condition of tracheostomy patients and the lack of support resources for patients and their families during discharge is the biggest challenge, especially for their home and non-professional caregivers. The present study aimed to identify the factors affecting the care of tracheostomy patients provided by home caregivers. Materials and Methods: This qualitative research was conducted from September 2018 to December 2019 using the content analysis method and interviews with nine home caregivers and one professional caregiver in Lorestan Province, Iran. The required data were collected by holding in-depth semi-structured interviews and continued until reaching data saturation. Simultaneously, the gathered data were analyzed using the 5-step approach of Graneheim and Lundman (2004). Results: The results led to the extraction of 2 themes of preventing and facilitating care factors, 7 categories, and 21 subcategories. The categories related to the theme (preventing factors) of patient care challenges included neglecting the caring role of informal caregivers by the healthcare system, interaction challenges, the high pressure of caregiving, and lack of trust. The categories related to the facilitating factors theme were the experience of the care facilitating over time, the intensification of care with the aim of prevention, and hope and inner satisfaction underlying the care. Conclusion: The challenges of the family's lack of readiness to accept the new role, the exhausting nature of caregiving, and the caregivers’ lack of skills, and as a result, the imposition of a burden of caregiving, and the emergence of harmful consequences for them in various dimensions, the existence of non-governmental organizations that aim to continue to care for these patients and support their families seems necessary. With support systems and gaining experience over time, the care transition process is facilitated.
Background: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a promising peptide for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the potential for therapeutic use of native GLP-1 is limited due to its extremely short half-life (a few minutes). In this research, a modified protease-resistant glucagon-like peptide-1 (mGLP-1) and a human serum albumin-binding DARPin connected by flexible and helical rigid linkers were designed to increase the half-life of this therapeutic peptide. Materials and Methods: In this study, the primary and secondary structures of designed fusion proteins were computationally studied, and some of their properties were predicted. The 3D model of the fusion proteins was created using the trRosetta server, and molecular docking between the fusion proteins and their respective receptors was conducted in the ClusPro server. Results: The results showed that the helical rigid linker (EAAAK)3 produced the best structure and stability for the designed fusion protein, and the fusion protein could preserve the original structure of the GLP-1 and DARPin molecules. The results of protein-ligand docking confirmed the interaction of fusion proteins with respectable receptors. Conclusion: When developing new fusion proteins, displaying and validating the domains of the designed structure is essential for comparing the efficiency and functionality with its natural homolog. The results of this study demonstrated that the mGLP-1-(EAAAK)3-DARPin fusion protein could be used in stability engineering to increase the half-life of the GLP-1 peptide drug in combination with HSA-binding DARPin.
Background: Functional disorder of the nervous system is one of the consequences of type 2 diabetes. Aβ-40 and IGF-1 are probably involved in this mechanism. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of aerobic training on Aβ-40 and IGF-1 proteins in the hippocampus of rats with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: A total of 32 8-week-old male Wistar rats were placed in 4 groups: control (C), diabetes (D), diabetes training (DT), and training (T). Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection. The training was performed for six weeks. To measure proteins, the ELISA method was used, and a one-way ANOVA test was used for data analysis. Results: The amount of Aβ-40 in group D was different from that of DT, T, and C groups (P<.05). The DT group displayed a significant difference from the C and T groups (P<.05). Aβ-40 levels were not different between T and C groups (P=0.604). The amount of IGF-1 in the D group was lower compared to all groups (P=0.001). Nonetheless, the DT group had no difference from the C and T groups (P>.05). The amount of IGF-1 in the T group was different only from the D group (P=0.001). The positive (Aβ-40) and negative (IGF-1) correlations were observed with blood glucose (P=0.001, r=0.850 and P=0.001, r=-0.814). Conclusion: Diabetes increases Aβ-40 and decreases IGF-1. Nevertheless, exercise moderates the effect of diabetes on them. Considering the appropriate duration of exercise and the correlation of these proteins with blood glucose, an increase in the intensity of aerobic training may further regulate the negative effect of diabetes on these two proteins.
Background: There is much evidence-based research on the anti-cancerous effect of antioxidants. Dihydroxyphenylethanol is a potent antioxidant that has several activities, such as oxidant stress control, cell proliferation inhibitory activity, and apoptosis induction. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of dihydroxyphenylethanol on antioxidant enzyme activity and malondialdehyde level in the HCT-116 cell line. Materials and Methods: In this study, a human colorectal cancer cell line HCT-116 was treated with different concentrations of 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylethanol (50, 100, 150, and 200 μM) for 24 h. Then, the level of malondialdehyde and activity of enzymes of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase were measured by colorimetric methods. Results: The results showed that 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethanol administration resulted in significant reduction of the malondialdehyde concentration and also significant increase of the antioxidant enzymes (e.g., catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase) in the treatment groups compared to the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Overall, 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylethanol may result in reduction of oxidative stress on HCT-116 line through changes in concentration of the malondialdehyde and antioxidant enzymes activity.
Background: Using baking soda and salt in preparing bread has different health effects on consumers. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the amount of baking soda, the percentage of salt, and the pH value in all kinds of bread produced in Khorramabad, Lorestan, Iran, in 2019. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 on bread consumed in Khorramabad during 12 months. The total number of samples was equal to 72 samples, including 24 Berber bread, 24 Sangak bread, and 24 lavash bread. The pH value, percentage of salt, and baking soda of baked samples, in each bread sample and in each season, was determined by standard method 2628. Results: The max and min pH values were observed in Berber (6.47) and Sangak (5.10) breads, respectively. The max and min percentage of salt was observed in Berber and Sangak breads and lavash, respectively. In all the analyzed breads, on average, the min and max salt percentages were equal to 0.39 and 1.67, respectively. Conclusion: Although the amount of baking soda in the preparation of bread has decreased compared to the last decade, the results of this study and other studies show that the unauthorized use of baking soda in the preparation of bread, especially Sangak and Berber, is still continuing in the country, especially in Khorramabad. Therefore, carrying out control and monitoring measures to manage this health problem should be considered in a consistent and continuous manner.
Background: Aging can lead to a decrease in cardiac function and an increase in oxidative stress in the heart, which leads to cellular aging through mitochondrial dysfunction. The present study aimed to investigate the antioxidant effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and genistein (Ge) consumption in the heart tissue of elderly rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 30 female Sprague-Dawley rats aged 18 to 24 months were selected and divided into five groups of six rats, including 1) HIIT, 2) Ge, 3) HIIT + Ge, 4) control, and 5) sham. During eight weeks, groups 2 and 3 received 60 mg of Ge dissolved in DMSO per kilogram of body weight daily, and group 5 received 60 mg of DMSO per kilogram of body weight per day intra-peritoneally. In addition, groups 1 and 3 ran on the treadmill three times per week. For statistical analysis of data, Shapiro-Wilk, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's post-hoc test were used. Results: High-intensity interval training had a significant effect on increasing GPx and MDA (P<0.05), Ge led to a significant decrease in SOD (P<0.05); however, HIIT with Ge had not interactive effects on improving SOD, GPx, and MDA (P<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that the antioxidant system is dependent on the intensity of exercise and the dose of genistein. Therefore, HIIT and Ge in this study have no interactive effect on the oxidant-antioxidant system in the heart of elderly rats.
Background: In the present study, the solvent effect (aqueous and hydroalcoholic) of the extraction on the content of phenol, flavonoid, and the antioxidant activity of six medicinal plants, including Persian oak fruit hull (Quercus brantii), Zataria multiflora, German Matricaria chamomilla, Teucrium polium, Rosa foetida Herrm, and mountain barberry (Berberis integerrima) was investigated. Materials and Methods: To measure phenol and flavonoid content, folin ciocaltio and aluminum chloride reagents were used, respectively, and to measure the antioxidant potential, the DPPH method was used. The content of phenol and flavonoid compounds was calculated as mg equivalent of gallic acid and catechin per gram of dry weight of the plant, respectively. The collected data was analyzed in SPSS software (version 14). Results: According to the obtained results, the amount of phenol and flavonoid in the hydroalcoholic extract of oak fruit hull Quercus brantii, Zataria multiflora, German Matricaria chamomilla, and mountain barberry was more than the aqueous extract, and this difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). The highest content of phenol and flavonoid were related to the hydroalcoholic extract of oak by 310.2 ± 2.5 mg/g and 241.2 ± 1 mg/g, respectively, and the lowest amounts were related to the aqueous extract of Matricaria chamomilla (53.1±1.1 mg/g) and the aqueous extract of acorn (23.9±1.5 mg/g), respectively. The highest antioxidant activity (IC50) was related to oak fruit-hull hydroalcoholic extract (39.1±4.4 µg/ml), and the lowest was related to the aqueous extract of Matricaria chamomilla (315.3±3.3 µg/ml). Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that the solvent used to extract plants is a significant factor in separation of phenol and flavonoid compounds as well as their antioxidant activity.
