The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action.
Event tourism, when integrated into public policies, can strengthen residents' quality of life and promote the sustainable development of destinations. This article analyzes the influence of events on public policy formulation by applying the Intertwining Model over the period from 1995 to 2024, based on an analysis of the evolution of public policies and events in Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The study relied on secondary sources and the destination life cycle approach, enabling the identification of four phases of local tourism development. The findings show that events acted as catalysts for governance and planning, contributingto the consolidation of public policies and to the enhancement of the city's cultural identity. It is concluded that the applied model provides an effective tool for understandingthe relationship between events, public policies, and residents' well-being, serving as a reference for public management and research in the field.
In nature-based tourism, the Caminho de Cora Coralina (CCC) stands out as a long-distance trail that honors the Goiana poet Cora Coralina. This study seeks to understand the hospitality relations embedded in the rituals performed by host women in lodging facilities along the trail. The research, of ethnographic nature, employed participant observation and semi-structured interviews in six establishments. We developed a theoretical model that represents hospitality rituals in three stages: initiation (threshold and reception), hosting (providing accommodation, food, gifts, entertainment, and farewell), and bond strengthening (renewal of social ties). These rituals unfold into smaller scenes and acts that reveal theoretical dimensions such as the ambiguity of the stranger, inequalities of place and status, the crossing of symbolic boundaries, and hospitality as a form of social regulation. We observed the presence of the gift, which transcends the logic of commercial exchange and re-signifies the norms governing hospitality and commensality. When host women assume central roles in these rituals, hospitality becomes intensified, fostering stronger ties with guests. Furthermore, we highlight the coexistence between the hosts' everyday rural life and the novelty of offering lodging, particularly in the management of homes and enterprises, in interactions shaped by symbolic and affective exchanges.
Research related to the well-being of tourist communities has gained increasing visibility, although in-depth investigations addressing residents' feelings about the operation of local short-term tourist accommodations still require further exploration. From the perspective of Service-Dominant Logic (SD Logic), this article focuses on exploring the influence of this business model on the well-being of the community of Braga, a tourist city in northern Portugal, through the understanding of the feelings of 27 residents interviewed in depth, with regard to perceived value co-creation and co-destruction factors. The results indicate an improvement in community well-being when the business generates, above all, increased economic activity for the city. However, negative impacts identified raise concerns about the future of this model in Braga and similar effects have already been observed in cities that have imposed significant restrictions on this type of operation. Future research may deepen the analysis in communities with similar or different levels of tourism development in order to support local stakeholders in maintaining or restoring the well-being of their communities.
Measuring sustainable tourist behaviour is fundamental to strengthening more responsible tourism, as it directly influences environmental conservation, social well-being and local economic development. The objective is to validate a measurement scale for sustainable behaviour among tourists. A total of 421 observations were collected from tourists residing in the State of Mexico, Mexico. The methodology involved cross-validation through a) a Psychological Network Analysis (PNA) and b) a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The result yielded a scale with 17 validated indicators. The network analysis identified that individual behaviours (nodes) have significant interactions, highlighting participation in community-beneficial activities, respectful treatment of residents, purchasing local products and crafts, as well as pro-environmental practices. The factor analysis confirmed a threedimensional structure reflectingsustainable behaviour from ecological, socio-cultural, and economic aspects. Methodological integration constitutes an innovative contribution to scientific progress, as it deciphers patterns of interaction between indicators and dimensions, thereby establishing a novel paradigm for addressing tourism sustainability. The validation of this instrument has important practical implications, serving as a foundation for diagnostics, interventions, and policy design aimed at promoting sustainable tourism.
Tourism has been a driverfor sustainable regional development in Brazil, highlightingthe importance of a critical analysis of the Tourism Regionalization Program (PRT), a key element of the National Tourism Policy. This study aims to analyze how the Regional Tourism Plans (PRT) have been incorporated and articulated in the National Tourism Plans of Brazil over time. Applied, exploratory, and descriptive in nature, the research uses a qualitative approach and is based on secondary data, with content analysis. The period analyzed spans from 2003 to 2024, coveringthe National Tourism Plans of 2003-2007, 2007-2010, 2013-2016, 2018-2022, and 2024-2027. The results indicate that the PRT has undergone significant changes over time, adapting to national demands and the tourism market. In the 2024-2027 National Tourism Plan, the PRT is reaffirmed as the foundation of federal tourism policy. Based on the principles of decentralization and regionalization, it seeks to promote more balanced and sustainable regional development. However, challenges remain, such asthe need for greater integration between governments and social actors, urgent improvements in tourism infrastructure, and the implementation of more inclusive and accessible policies.
Reflecting on the possible relations between transport and tourism-and on how academic and scientific thinking about the subject has developed over the past decades - is no easy task. Yet, this is the challenge taken up by this didactic review. The work begins by presenting the origins of research in this field and moves toward exploring the potential trajectories of this interface, whether in terms of market dynamics or academic inquiry. It seeks to articulate the various modes of transport - road, rail, water and air-with the demands of tourism, and vice versa. The selection of cases or approaches is not intended to be exhaustive; rather, it serves as an illustration of the range of possibilities for studying each mode of transport. Accordingly, emerging themes such as the challenges facing the cruise industry in Brazil, the car rental market and the consolidation of the leisure segment, the tourist experience of rail travel, and the new uses assigned to airports are examined in greater detail. The aim is to ultimately contribute to the development of a research agenda addressing some of the key challenges and opportunities at the intersection of transport and tourism in the coming decades.
The present research aimed to analyze how gender issues in female labor within the Amazonian tourism sector impact the material conditions of women living along the riverbanks. To achieve this, we adopted a multimethod approach, combining ethnography-data collection through informal conversations, field diaries, in-depth interviews, photographs, and participant observation-and historicaldialectical materialism Amazonian tourism reproduces the community's sexual division of labor (men hold decision-making power; domestic activities are associated with women); b) Amazonian tourism businesses are exclusively run by men; c) the political disadvantage of women; d) the vulnerability of women to situations of violence (sexual harassment). Finally, we hope that this re- search contributes to discussions on gender and labor in the field of tourism, particularly in Amazonian Tourism; ongoing actions to combat harassment practices by visitors/tourists; and the overcoming of restrictions in the material living conditions of riverine women.
This study aims to analyze the influence of temporal distance on the evaluation of tangible and intangible attributes in lodging experiences, and its effects on satisfaction and word-of-mouth (WOM) intention. Based on the Theory of Psychological Distance and Construal Level Theory (CLT), the theoretical model was initially validated by 17 experts, including academic professionals and hotel managers. Subsequently, a survey was conducted with 482 Brazilian guests whose last stay had occurred between less than 1 month and up to 24 months before data collection. The analysis was carried out using structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis (MGA). The results indicate that satisfaction did not show significant statistical variation between tangible and intangible attributes overtime. On the other hand, word-of-mouth was more influenced bytangible attributes in evaluations closerto the consumption moment and by intangible attributes in more distant evaluations, especially when moderated bytravel purpose (business or leisure). The study contributes by integrating psychological constructs into the consumer behavior literature in tourism, offering practical implications for marketing strategies and hotel management.
This viewpoint paper aims to analyse the increasingly crucial role of networks in leisure and tourism. It considers different ways of understanding networks, drawing on the work of Tim Ingold and Randall Collins. In particular, it assesses the use of different metaphors for network builders, including Ingold's reflections on ants and spiders, and introduces the idea of archipelagos as a conceptual frame for networks. Since Manuel Castells coined the phrase 'network society' in his 1996 opus, the rise of the Internet and social media has made his vision a global reality. We are increasingly connected to people and places across the world, and this has also transformed the way that we work, travel, and enjoy leisure. This paper considers the role of networks in contemporary society and how these are conceived in the fields of tourism and leisure. One paradox of the network society is that broadening connections serve to narrow our view, reflected in research networks by the increasing dominance of English and an Anglo-Saxon research culture. We pay attention to the relationship between different network forms and effects, and what 'makes things happen' in networks. Building on Ingold's (2008) metaphors of the ANT and the SPIDER as network-makers, we introduce the Archipelago as a new way of thinking about networks that reflects the reciprocal creation of network value.
The Travel and Tourism (T&T) industry is highly sensitive to extreme events like pandemics (Price et al., 2022; OECD, 2020). The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted the sector, leading to mobility restrictions and closures (Chowdhury and Jomo, 2020). However, it also presented opportunities for innovation (Price et al., 2022). The economic impact on Portugal's GDP was significant, with T&T's contribution dropping from 17.1% in 2019 to 8.7% in 2020 and recovering in subsequent years (WTTC, 2022). Given the Algarve's dependence on tourism, this study highlights the need for new strategies to overcome challenges (EURES, 2022). This research aims to analyse how Algarve's (South of Portugal) hospitality (hotels and restaurants) employers and employees perceived the Portuguese government's measures to address the COVID-19 crisis via a Three-Way Data Analysis multivariate statistical procedure, namely the COSTATIS method, which can be considered a more advanced or specialized version of STATIS, offering more flexibility and refinement in handling complex data relationships. The statistical procedure supports the assessment of 27 varieties of perceptions of the pandemic crisis that were collected from respondents distributed in four hospitality professional categories (restaurant and hotel managers and employees). The conclusions identify that association with a professional category in the hospitality industry tends to affect ideas regarding the potential for coping and resilience associated with organizational challenges. Members of the diverse professional categories think of the crisis in different ways due to their status and hierarchic position in business organisations. More attention should be given to what those professionals with lower status have to say about the organisational climate in the event of future crises.
