There are varied kinds of plant-origin resources, many of which are considered wastes as these materials normally do not find proper economic utilization. Awareness on the utilization of the plant wastes in the household sector is the need of the hour for motivation and impact development among the target group. It can have a great impact on improvement of rural economy in a poor state like Assam. For example - with simple suitable technological intervention the areca palm leaf sheath can be utilized for making biosphere friendly disposable plates and bowls which are biodegradable and have a competitive market edge over paper and other non biodegradable plates made of synthetic materials. Many water bodies like canals, ponds, rivers etc. are choked by the explosive growth of aquatic weed called water hyacinth resulting in enormous direct loss. The prospect of making it an economically blessed weed by properly utilising it as business commodity is getting higher. The opportunity should be trapped by the local or indigenous people by developing adequate entrepreneurship with almost zero raw material cost. A study was under taken with the objectives: To assess the economics of areca palm sheath disposable serving plate making and Assessment of economics of use of water hyacinth for handicraft products. It was revealed that by using 231 numbers of palm leaf sheath per day and an 8 hours of working using two manually operated pressing machines and spending rupees 354 as daily additional cost, a person can earn a profit of rupees one lakh nineteen thousand nine hundred six annually, resulting in a benefit cost ratio of 2.23. On the other hand by making certain utility products using one kg of dried water hyacinth stems @ Rs. 40/- one can earn an average of two thousand nine hundred fifty rupees weekly. The benefit cost ratio was found to be 1.65 which may increase further depending on products of finer quality. Availability of areca plantation and water hyacinth in this part of the country can thus be gainfully utilized as raw material for manufacturing eco- friendly useful biodegradable items with a high potential market face value and thus would help to enhance rural economy.

Mango the “King of fruits” is the most important fruit crop in India. Harvesting of the mangoes are done with different methods by Indian farmers like manual plucking, tree shaking or local harvesters which are manufactured by the farmers. The tree branches are shaken to speed up the harvesting, which results in post harvest losses due to the physical damage, stem end rot and sap bleeding in mangoes due to absence of pedicel. To overcome these local harvesting methods and to reduce to drudgery of the farmers Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Banavasi has introduced IIHR model for harvesting mangoes and conducted frontline demonstration in farmer’s field. Harvesting efficiency of different harvesters was studied in comparison to manual plucking and local made harvester was compared with that of Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore (IIHR) model. Among all the methods IIHR model is found to have higher efficiency as compared to the local b models.
The rising prevalence of diabetes is closely associated with industrialization, urbanization, socio-economic development and changes in the life style. The rice varieties namely TRY-3, Black Kavuni and Karungkuruvai were selected for the study based on their popularity, nutritional characteristics and other specific characteristics in Tamil Nadu.Initially the non-diabetic participants were screened by conducting glucose tolerance test by administering glucose powder available in the market dissolved in potable water containing 50g of glucose as reference carbohydrate. For the intervention rice varieties viz., TRY-3, Black Kavuni and Karungkuruvai containing 50g of carbohydrate in the form flakes and provided to the healthy participant. The blood glucose level of the participants before administering test food and during 15 th , 30 th , 45 th , 60 th , 90 th and 120 th minutes were noted and taken for calculating the glycemic index. The Carbohydrate and crude fibre content of TRY-3, Black Kavuni and Karunkuruvai were 70.23g and 0.99g, 62.89g and 1.70g and 63.09g and 2.01g, respectively. The Consumer acceptability of TRY-3 was high than Black Kavuni and Karunkuruvai with values are 8.7, 8.1 and 7.8, respectively. The recovery percentage of Black Kavuni was high than Karunkuruvai and TRY-3 with values are 58 per cent, 55.2 per cent and 53.5 per cent, respectively. In the present study the Glycemic index of black kavuni (53.10) is lesser than karunkuruvai (55.50) which are in the low Glycemic foods.TRY 3 has a G.I. of 68.20 which is higher Glycemic index than traditional varieties.

The present study was conducted with the objective to assess the effectiveness of social advertisements in promoting adoption of selected health and hygiene practices. The study was conducted in purposively selected two districts of Punjab, India i.e. Gurdaspur and Ludhiana. Total eight villages from four selected blocks of selected districts were randomly selected. From each of the selected village 20 rural women were selected randomly. So, in total 160 respondents made a sample for data collection. The most frequently telecasted five government sponsored social advertisements during the month of June, 2017 on Swach Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India campaign), use of ORS/Zinc during diarrhoea, pregnancy check-up, immunization and breast feeding were selected after consultation with experts. Data was collected using pre-tested structured interview schedule.
