Maize (Zea mays L.) is the world’s most cultivated crop after wheat and rice in production of cereal crop. It is also one of the major cereal crops grown in Ethiopia, the crop has wide adaptability. It is very important item of human consumption and is also used as cattle and poultry feed besides being grown to horses and sheep. However inadequate phosphorus application is one of the constraints that limit the growth performance and yield components of Maize (Zea mays L.). Fertilizer has been a major component of improved maize production technologies being promoted by the extension package. Phosphorus encourages plant growth which enhances early leaf initiation and development. The objective of this seminar is to evaluate the effect of different level of phosphorus fertilizer on growth performance and yield of maize (Zea mays L.). The increase in plant height with the increase in nitrogen fertilizer level was due to the positive effect of nitrogen element on plant growth that leads to progressive increase in internode length and consequently plant height. Lack of nitrogen results in stunted growth, pale yellow color, small grain size and reduced yield. It is an essential component of amino acid and protein. The growth of plant primarily depends on nitrogen availability in soil solution and its utilization by crop plants. Yields, number of grains per ear, plant height, chlorophyll contents, energy contents and P uptake efficiency of maize increases at high level of P application; Number of grains per ear, weight of grains per ear, weigh of grains per plot and 1000-grain weight were maximum with this application rate. Nitrogen and phosphorus are very essential for good vegetative growth and grain development in maize production. Generally, Nitrogen and phosphorus has significant effect on growth performance and yield components of maize like; plant height, number of leaf per plant, length of leaves, number of internodes, internodes length and stem diameter.

Eurycoma longifolia has been widely used for various traditional medicinal purposes in Malaysia. Among the major compounds produced in E. longifolia is quassinoids. However little is known about the biosynthesis pathway leading to these compounds.As a starting point, genes involved in terpenoids biosynthesis pathway, which is the primary pathway leading to quassinoid were analysed using Illumina high-throughput RNA-sequencing technology.The transcriptome profiles were generated from roots of the mature 10-year-old and the young 1-year-old E. longifolia. BLAST against the Nr database of 60,753 non-redundant unigenes obtained indicated that only 34,673 (57%) showed homology to known proteins and was highly similar to citrus. Most assignments of gene ontology based on the biological process category were to “metabolic process”. KEGG analysis showed that key enzymes in major secondary metabolite pathways were present in the transcriptome and the highest were assigned to “phenylpropanoid biosynthesis” and “terpenoid backbone biosynthesis”. Differentially expressed gene analysis predicted 154 unigenes were potentially related to quassinoid biosynthesis. They were up-regulated in 10-year-old roots and were either involved in terpenoids backbone biosynthesis, encoded for transcription factors (WRKY and AP2/ERF genes) or encoded for cytochrome P450.

This paper is concerned with the production of various flavored incense sticks from a few herbal sources and floral waste from temples as an initiative to reduce dumping organic wastes into water bodies. To minimize the dumping of solid wastes into the water bodies and prevent the usage of chemicals in production of incense sticks, an attempt was made to produce incense sticks from the flower and herbal plants such as neem, tulsi, turmeric, rose, marikozhundh etc., collected from the temples from nearby Bharathiar University, Maruthamalai, Coimbatore by reducing, recycling and reusing the organic wastes through Solid State Fermentation (SSF) technology. The present study focused on the production of incense sticks in the laboratory with an aim to infuse skill development, employment opportunities and entrepreneurship avenues to undergraduate students. Based on the available resources, the products were fabricated, typical composition consists of 14% (by weight) of sawdust powder and adhesive powder (jigatt), 12 % of herbal powder as fragrance material (by weight), 10-15 % (number) of bamboo stick and 10 % (by weight) charcoal. On average, 10-15 incense sticks were produced depending upon the diameter.
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a sexual disorder that has a strong impact on the patient's life quality and can threaten the stability of the couple's relationship. The current study aimed to document medicinal plants used in the management of erectile dysfunction in Bwatun, Mali. An ethnobotanical survey was conducted among twenty traditional practitioners using a semi-structured interview. Then, a phytochemical screening using standard methods was carried out on the three most cited plants. From the analysis of the survey sheets, 16 plant species belonging to 11 families were recorded. Fabaceae family represented the most cited with 31.25%, followed by Poaceae (12.50%). About plant parts, roots were the most used organs with 45%. The commonly used methods of preparation were: chewing (43.75%) and decoction (37.50%); the method of administration was oral exclusively. Phytochemical analysis of the three most cited plants (Tamarindus indica L., Guiera senegalensis J.F. Gmel and Ximenia americana L.) revealed the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, coumarins, saponins, tannins, terpenes, flavonoids and reducing sugars that support the use of these plants in the management of erectile dysfunction.
Exposure to Industrial wastes and leakages can cause prolong damage to humans and plants due to the presence of chemical wastes and heavy metals. This study was conducted to compare the pharmacognostic profile, presence and effects of heavy metals and determine the adverse effects of using medicinal plants from Industrial Area to manage diseases in humans with that of the plant grown in Non-Industrial Area. Standard methods for pharmacognostic and elemental analysis such as macro- and microscopical evaluation, Physico-chemical, phytochemical and elemental analysis were used. Statistical analyses were done using student t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Hygrophila auriculata leaf grown in Industrial Area was found to be slightly sour in taste, light green in color with yellowish patches and musty odor as compared to the tasteless, deep green coloration and characteristic odor in Non-Industrial Area. Results of the physicochemical analysis showed that, moisture content, total ash, acid insoluble and water soluble ash, alcohol and water soluble extractive values showed accumulation of extraneous organic matters, impurities and retained much water in Hygrophila auriculata leaf grown in Industrial Area than the one grown in Non-Industrial Area. Hygrophila auriculata leaf grown in Industrial Area was screened positive for steroids/terpenes, cardiac glycosides and saponins while that grown in Non-Industrial Area was positive for steroids/terpenes, cardiac glycosides, saponins, tannins, flavonoids and alkaloids. Hygrophila auriculata leaf grown in Industrial Area was found to contain a significant amount of Cobalt, Lead and Zinc at (p<0.05) as compared to the values obtained from those grown in Non-Industrial Area. Plants from industrial areas should not be used as drug.

In this study, chemotaxonomical relationships between two species (Centaurea balsamita and C. Behen) belongs to the genus Centaurea were investigated. The essential oil yields of these species were found as 0.4 and 0.3% v/w, respectively. The essential oils were analysed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A total of sixty three components have been identified constituting 90.6% and 87.5% of the oil, respectively. Butanoic acid (16.3%), spathulenol (15.5%), α-terpinolene (10.2%) and caryophyllene oxide (4.6%) were detected main compounds of C. balsamita, however caryophyllene oxide (15.9%), spathulenol (11.4%), germacrene D (6.6%) and allo-aromadendrene (6.1%) were detected major constituents of C. behen. The compositions of the oils were subjected to a hierarchical cluster analysis by application of the SPSS, with a view to test their use in chemotaxonomy.
