PurposeThis study aims to explore, confirm and verify the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in social commerce to influence perceived value. This model proposes social presence as a moderator between perceived value and satisfaction.Design/methodology/approachThis study employed a deductive approach and a quantitative research design. Data were collected from 309 social commerce users in Indonesia and analyzed using AMOS to test the covariance-based structural equation modelling technique.FindingsThe results indicate that the use of AI in terms of perceived usefulness and ease of use can increase perceived value. The moderating role of social presence can also strengthen the relationship between perceived value and satisfaction.Practical implicationsCompanies can utilize AI-driven customer journey mapping to predict consumer behaviour while providing hybrid services to maintain emotional value in interactions. Furthermore, AI-based co-creation platforms can involve consumers in product or campaign design, thereby strengthening loyalty and creating competitive differentiation.Originality/valueThese findings present a novel concept, highlighting social presence as a factor that enhances understanding of how customer-perceived value translates into satisfaction in the context of AI use.
Purpose This study aims to examine corporate social responsibility (CSR) dynamics from the perspective of Mongolian executive-level managers – focusing on their perceptions of CSR concepts, motivations and perceived outcomes – to extend existing CSR frameworks by identifying potential relationships among context-specific CSR responsibilities, motivations and business goals. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative approach was used, with in-depth interviews conducted with 31 executive managers across 12 industries. A total of 52 CSR initiatives were explored and thematically analysed. Findings By identifying 22 CSR motivations and integrating them with Carroll's CSR pyramid through the lens of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, this study proposes an extended CSR pyramid that links organisational motivations to CSR responsibilities. The framework explains how CSR priorities may evolve as organisations' needs change, offering insights applicable across different institutional contexts. It also reveals a consistent organisational decision-making pattern in CSR engagement and proposes a CSR decision-making model in which motivations initiate CSR actions. Research limitations/implications The primary limitation lies in the reliance on self-reported perceptions regarding the effectiveness of CSR initiatives. Practical implications Practically, the extended CSR pyramid offers significant value. It can serve as a diagnostic tool for CSR maturity, helping Mongolian organisations identify whether their actions are driven by basic operational needs (e.g. stabilising their operation) or higher-order aspirations (e.g. social equity and sustainability). By understanding that CSR motivation stems from varying organisational needs, practitioners can design programs aligned with their firm's strategic readiness. For instance, firms driven by basic needs may prioritise compliance or cost-saving green initiatives, while those at higher levels of development may pursue transformative, purpose-led initiatives. Additionally, the model strengthens stakeholder communication by clarifying CSR intent and maturity. Finally, Mongolian policymakers and industry bodies can use this framework to develop CSR promotion strategies tailored to each business's unique developmental stage and motivational profile. Originality/value This is the first qualitative study on CSR conducted in Mongolia, offering a more dynamic understanding of CSR engagement in developing countries.
Purpose - Existing M&A research predominantly focuses on deal success as an important outcome. This study investigates the underexplored phenomenon of deal failure by examining whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) shortfall by acquirers and targets and acquirer-target CSR asymmetry impacts the likelihood of deal abandonment within the unique setting of India's mandatory CSR regime. Reversing the conventional lens from deal success to deal failure, it highlights how CSR shortfall shapes the risk of broken deals in emerging markets. Design/methodology/approach - Logistic and probit regressions are employed with year- and industry-fixed effects for 310 Indian M&A transactions (2015-2020). CSR shortfall is defined as the extent to which a firm's actual CSR spending falls below the statutory requirement. Findings - CSR shortfall by private acquirers reduces deal failure likelihood, whereas it increases failure risk of publicly listed firms. Moreover, greater CSR asymmetry between acquirers and targets heightens the probability of deal abandonment, indicating that misaligned CSR orientations elevate the risk of M&A failure. Practical implications - Managers should recognize CSR shortfall as a strategic risk factor. Aligning CSR spending levels and accounting for public visibility during deal planning can mitigate the risk of deal failure. Originality/value - The author provides the first examination of CSR shortfall and CSR asymmetry as drivers of M&A failure in a mandatory CSR regime and shifts the focus from deal success to deal failure. This study extends CSR-M&A research beyond voluntary frameworks to a statutory spending environment.
PurposeThis study assesses whether solid waste treatment (SWT) attracts foreign direct investment (FDI) and, via that channel, raises provincial economic growth in Vietnam.Design/methodology/approachUsing panel data for 63 provinces (2006-2021), the author estimates a two-equation framework: (1) the effect of SWT on FDI inflows and (2) the joint effects of SWT and FDI on provincial economic growth. The analysis employs province fixed effects, feasible generalized least squares and system generalized method of moments (system-GMM) estimators, complemented by heterogeneity analyses across provinces.Findings(1) SWT significantly and positively predicts FDI, (2) both SWT and FDI are positive and statistically significant predictors of provincial economic growth and (3) joint results from the two equations provide evidence consistent with FDI mediating the SWT-growth pathway. Importantly, the heterogeneity analysis reveals that the growth effects of SWT are not uniform, but are substantially stronger in provinces with higher FDI exposure and greater absorptive capacity.Practical implicationsStrengthening SWT capacity and performance can serve as an effective lever for attracting higher-quality FDI and accelerating provincial income growth, particularly in provinces with adequate economic capacity and investment readiness.Social implicationsViewing SWT as a growth-enabling infrastructure can strengthen investment readiness and resilience, but basic treatment alone is insufficient for sustainability transitions, as its economic returns depend critically on local conditions.Originality/valueThe study reframes SWT as a productive environmental infrastructure, offering the first province-level evidence from Vietnam on an environment-investment-growth nexus with an explicit mediating mechanism and heterogeneous provincial effects.
PurposeThis study examines how green entrepreneurs in Vietnam build and legitimize innovation under conditions of institutional incompleteness. This explains how resource scarcity can catalyze sustainability-oriented innovation by enabling entrepreneurs to develop dynamic capabilities through entrepreneurial identity reconfiguration, local resource circularity, and local ecological empowerment.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs an inductive multiple-case design involving four Vietnamese green ventures. Drawing on secondary qualitative data, it applies Gioia's methodology and Cheong's seven-step hybrid secondary qualitative approach to trace how sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring unfold in a theory-revealing context of emerging countries.FindingsInstitutional incompleteness creates a legitimacy bottleneck for green ventures. Entrepreneurs respond by reconfiguring their identities to sharpen ecological opportunity recognition, mobilizing circular local resources to seize opportunities, and empowering ecosystem actors to sustain reconfiguration and diffusion. Collectively, these microfoundations enable green innovation and scaling under certain constraints.Originality/valueThis study extends the dynamic capabilities theory by specifying how green innovation is built and legitimized under institutional incompleteness in Vietnam. It also contributes to sustainable entrepreneurship research by showing that, in emerging-market green transitions, capability formation depends less on resource abundance than on identity, circularity, and ecosystem empowerment.
PurposeThis study assesses the impact of remittances on Indonesian household welfare by examining dietary quality and asset ownership. It addresses prior methodological gaps by employing diverse econometric techniques to establish robust associations between remittances, food expenditure and investment behavior. This study draws on the New Economics of Labor Migration (NELM) and Permanent Income Hypothesis (PIH) frameworks to interpret how remittances relax liquidity constraints (short-term consumption) and increase permanent income (asset accumulation).Design/methodology/approachAnalyzing Indonesia Family Life Survey data (2000–2014), the study employs Two-Way Fixed Effects (TWFE) and Difference-in-Differences (DiD) models across three survey waves. Quantile regressions explore distributional effects by controlling for household characteristics and economic status. Robustness checks using various new TWFE and DiD methods validate findings.FindingsThe study shows that remittances are associated with a 94% increase in asset ownership and a fourfold rise in food expenditure. Higher spending on nutrient-rich animal protein indicates improved dietary quality. The poorest households benefit most, with food spending 3.5 times higher than that of non-recipients.Research limitations/implicationsThis analysis relies on self-reported remittance data and excludes migrants that are absent for more than 12 months. Future research could integrate extended migration histories and explore the intergenerational effects of remittances.Practical implicationsLowering formal remittance fees, expanding micro-savings and financial-literacy programs and introducing nutrition-focused education or food vouchers can translate remittances into sustained welfare gains, especially among lower-expenditure households.Originality/valueUsing TWFE and a multi-period DiD framework, this study provides evidence consistent with NELM and PIH, showing that remittances increase both short- and long-term asset accumulation.
PurposeThis study aims to analyze South Korea's trade patterns to derive any meaningful policy implications.Design/methodology/approachUsing an augmented gravity model with panel data from 186 countries over 2 decades (2000–2023), this paper applies various approaches, including pooled ordinary least squares, panel random effects, instrumental variables and so on.FindingsThis study finds that traditional variables, including gross domestic product (GDP) and distance, follow expected patterns, while migration emerges as a significant trade-promoting factor, especially among lower-income countries. Interaction terms confirm that migration and trade are more closely linked when partner countries have lower per capita incomes.Originality/valueThese findings contribute to the literature by suggesting that migration can complement Korea's trade strategy, particularly during periods of demographic decline. Additionally, while Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation's role has strengthened, free trade agreements (FTAs) are showing a declining influence. A comparison of predicted and actual trade flows reveals under-traded partners, indicating unrealized trade potential. This study calls for better alignment between immigration and trade policy and a reassessment of Korea's FTA strategy.
PurposeThis study explores the relationship between regional economic development and income inequality in the Philippines using a provincial panel dataset.Design/methodology/approachThis study performs static, spatial and dynamic panel data analyses to assess whether income inequality follows an N-shaped augmented Kuznets curve in the context of regional economic development.FindingsOur findings reveal that income inequality follows a semi-N-shaped curve, indicating that in the early stages of regional economic development, income inequality increases but at a decelerating rate. Unlike the inverted-U curve, it does not transition into a decline. After reaching an inflection point, income inequality rises. The Philippines has undergone a rapid shift in its industrial structure from relatively uniform manufacturing to skill-diverse services. This appears to have been particularly pronounced in the wealthier provinces, with their gross domestic product (GDP) shifting from manufacturing to high-productivity services. These provinces seem to have experienced the rising portion of the second Kuznets wave.Originality/valueA panel dataset covering 87 provinces was constructed based on five rounds of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey from 1997 to 2018. This panel dataset resolves many of the issues encountered in cross-country studies on economic development and income inequality. Our study is the first attempt to investigate the evolution of income inequality in relation to regional economic development in the Philippines.
PurposeThe ASEAN-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was signed in 2006 and took effect the following year. This research seeks to determine whether the implementation of the ASEAN-Korea FTA has been satisfactory for ASEAN-5 total and high-tech manufactured exports.Design/methodology/approachManufacturing export flows between the ASEAN-5 and Korea are analyzed using the synthetic control method. This approach allows us to develop a counterfactual unit for manufacturing exports in a scenario in which no FTA would have been implemented.FindingsOur results reveal that the ASEAN-Korea FTA has had a significantly positive impact on manufactured exports from the ASEAN-5 countries, both at the country and aggregate levels. Furthermore, it is observed that this positive outcome has also held for high-tech manufactured exports.Originality/valueThis research expands the literature in the field of trade agreement evaluation. Given the important economic implications of high-tech exports, this paper assesses the consequences that the ASEAN-Korea FTA has for such manufactured ASEAN exports. Moreover, this research studies whether the synthetic indicator is a good predictor of exports for the period before the FTA, analyzing the stochastic properties of the difference between these variables.
Compared with domestic trade, export business has more risks and thus companies’ export revenues rely significantly on the quality of managerial decisions. In practice, each manager has his/her own pychological characteristics and personal traits which considerably determine their decision-making mechanisms. With a sample of 1,859 observations from manufacturing companies and various regression techniques such as logit, tobit and OLS, this paper investigates the roles of CEO genfer and experiences in companies’ export results. We find that companies with female CEOs are more likely to export and have higher export intensity. Besides, CEOs with more experience help their firms improve export results. These empirical findings imply that companies should create a fair mechanism for women to participate in their top-managememt teams instead of worrying about their performance. Moreover, this research shows that many efforts made by both public and private organizations over several years are appropriate and necessary.
The paper examines the impact of corporate governance on financial performance of banks with the mediating role of financial instrument disclosure (FID). The study uses a sample of 21 banks in Vietnam and multiple regression analysis with panel data for 14 years, 2010-2023. Sobel-Goodman and Bootstrap tests are used to assess the mediating role of FID. The results show that the level of conformity with the requirements of International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS 7) is about 36.8%. The study provides evidence of the mediating role of FID in the relationship between executive members, foreign ownership and financial performance. In addition, the level of education, executive participation and foreign ownership contribute to increasing the financial performace of banks, which is explained by the agency theory and the resource dependence theory. The research implication shows that Vietnam should quickly build accounting standards on FID, banks need to have appropriate accounting policies on FID to further contribute to improving financial performance.
The study analyses the impact of supply chain integration directly on logistics performance and indirectly through logistics management capabilities including demand management capability, operation management capability and resource management capability; as well as the moderating impact of the enterprise logistics environment on this relationship. Using the partial least squares method to test the research sample of 392 logistics service providers (LSP) in the Southeast region, it shows that supply chain integration including three components of internal integration, customer integration and logistics collaborator integration has a positive impact on the logistics performance of enterprises, and this impact level will increase when combined with logistics management capabilities. The more complex the logistics environment of LSPs is, the more they tend to integrate the supply chain, thereby improving logistics management capabilities and enhancing the enterprise’s logistics performance. Thus, the study provides some managerial implications to improve the logistics performance of LSPs from the perspective of supply chain integration.
This study examines the influence of brand transparency on consumers’ intention to purchase sustainable products, and also clarifies the mediating role of green extrinsic motivation and emotional value. The study employs a quantitative method through a consumer survey, with 357 valid samples analyzed by partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that brand transparency positively influences sustainable product purchase intention, green extrinsic motivation, and emotional value. Furthermore, green extrinsic motivation plays a mediating role in this relationship, while emotional value does not demonstrate a statistically significant mediating effect. The study also confirms the positive influence of green extrinsic motivation and emotional value on sustainable product purchase intention, and shows the positive influence of emotional value on green extrinsic motivation.. The research results contribute to both the theory of sustainable consumer behavior and corporate governance practice.
Corporate pricing is important not only to the firm itself but also to competition regulation and monetary policy. This study aims to examine the impact of trade credit, in the relationship with suppliers and customers, including both trade credit supply and demand, on small and medium enterprises’ price markups. The results show that both trade credit supply and demand are negatively associated with corporate price markups, particularly among credit-constrained firms – those having difficulty in accessing bank credit. Moreover, firms extended trade credit in the aftermath of the 2011–2013 credit crunch to raise price markups, while boosting sales. Our study provides novel evidence on the relationship between trade credit and small and medium enterprises’ price markups in a developing country like Vietnam.
This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the adoption of cashless payment in small businesses at traditional markets and informal businesses in Ho Chi Minh City. Data was collected from 969 business owners, and SEM modeling was used to test the relationships in the model. The results show that the readiness to adopt technology positively influences the intention to transition to cashless payment, while organizational inertia, cash usage habits, and lack of trust in technology serve as significant barriers. Businesses with good technological infrastructure can more easily overcome inertia and adopt electronic payments. Policies should focus on enhancing technology readiness through training, infrastructure support, and encouraging the use of electronic payments. Additionally, organizational inertia should be minimized by building trust and demonstrating the benefits of cashless payments. This study provides valuable insights into the factors affecting the adoption of cashless payment in small businesses in Vietnam within the context of a rapidly developing digital economy.
This study investigates the impact of economic policy uncertainty on banking competitiveness by analyzing data from 1.006 banks in 20 countries worldwide sourced from Refinitiv Eikon during the period 2009‒2023. Employing fixed effects, feasible generalized least squares, Driscoll-Kraay standard errors, and IV-GMM for panel data, the findings reveal a positive influence of economic policy uncertainty on banking sector competitiveness, as measured by both the economic policy uncertainty index and the World Uncertainty Index. However, nonlinear effects are only evident in the case of the economic policy uncertainty index. Furthermore, when examining developing and developed countries separately, the economic policy uncertainty index exhibits an inverted U-shaped relationship with banking sector competitiveness in developed countries and a U-shaped relationship in developing countries. For the World Uncertainty Index, only an inverted U-shaped relationship is found in developing countries. Consequently, this study proposes several policy implications to assist bank managers in formulating appropriate strategies to both navigate the challenges posed by the economic policy uncertainty environment and enhance their competitive edge.
This study examined the relationship between the high-performance work systems (HPWS)- serviceability- business performance chain in the banking sector in Ho Chi Minh City. Using data collected from 386 bank branches and transaction offices of 17 banks and employing the PLS analytical technique, we found that HPWS has a positive impact on business performance, which is mediated by serviceability. The findings provide a solid foundation for bank managers to make informed decisions regarding investments in HPWS and enhancing service capability to optimize business performance.
This study investigates the relationship between migration and household vulnerability to food insecurity in Vietnam, using panel data from the Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey (VHLSS) for 2016–2018. A fixed effects model is employed to examine how different forms of migration short-term, long-term, labor-related, and non-labor-related—affect vulnerability in the consumption of four key nutrients: energy, protein, fat, and carbohydrates. The Vulnerability as Expected Poverty (VEP) approach is adapted to measure food insecurity vulnerability. Results show that short-term labor migration increases vulnerability, reflecting the adverse effects of labor shortages during the initial transition period. In contrast, long-term labor migration reduces vulnerability as remittances stabilize and households accumulate knowledge to improve production and consumption. Furthermore, labor-related migration has a stronger impact than non-labor-related migration in both short- and long-term cases.
