
The bronze coinage of Genio Augusti and Genio Caesaris types follows the reopening of the Siscia mint after its temporary closure during the difficult historical events of years 307 and 308. These coin types reflect numerous dynastic conflicts and clashes common in the period after the conference in Carnuntum in November308 and Galerius's death in May 311. Alongside some written sources, in the first place Lactantius and Eusebius, the best sources for these times can be found in coins, inscriptions and papyri. They reveal the background of those complicated political fights among various members of the tetrarchic collegium. This article presents the results of the analysis of material found in two large tetrarchic hoards-from Trijebanj in Bosnia and Hercegovina, and Bjelovar in Croatia-in which Genio Augusti and Caesaris are abundantly presented, with 667 pieces in total. New conclusions regarding the typology, circumstances and time of minting of these two types in the Siscia mint are also brought forward.
The village of Badanj is located on the southwestern slopes of Mount Promina, on the northern edge of Petrovo Polje, approximately two kilometres from the town of Drni & scaron;. Benefitting from a favourable location, the area is rich in fertile soil and water sources, with several streams and small rivers flowing through it. At the centre of the village lies the church of St John the Baptist with the town cemetery, originally built in the 15th century. From the time of Ottoman rule until 1886, the church formally served as the centre of the Drni & scaron; parish. During the Croatian War for Independence, the church was destroyed; and, during its reconstruction in 1997 and 1998, archaeological investigations were carried out. These investigations revealed twelve tombs containing a total of fifty-three artefacts. The earliest finds can be dated to the 16th century, while the most recent belong to the second half of the 19th century. Among the artefacts, religious items dominate: medallions, crosses, rosaries and three breverls being of particular interest. Parts of traditional dress, jewelleryand some utilitarian objects were also found. Unfortunately, the excavations were neither documented nor published, limiting our understanding of this cemetery to the surviving archaeological material. This presentation focuses on the artefacts as a lens through which to shed new light on the history of this region during and after the end of Ottoman rule. It shifts the focus from major historical events to the everyday lives of ordinary people, marked by war, crisis and epidemics. The study aims to establish a chronology of the cemetery and to explore questions relating to pilgrimage and mobility, piety, spirituality, dress and the social status of the population buried within the church of St John.
This article presents data about rescue excavations and sampling of the south face of the interior profile (profile 3), conducted in the Vindija cave in 2023. The goal of the fieldwork was the protection of the south profile face and the collection of samples for new and hitherto unconducted analyses. Vindija has been a relevant site in the field of archaeology for many years, not only because of the extraordinary finds of Neandertal skeletal remains and Palaeolithic stone and bone artefacts, but also due to the early implementation of various analytical methods, whose results have contributed to answering key questions about the life and development of Palaeolithic populations. This paper describes the methodology, the course of the excavation, and the sampling procedure, while also providing basic quantitative data on the finds recovered. In addition, data on stratigraphy is provided, as well as correlation with the stratigraphic framework established by earlier research. During this excavation, samples were collected for radiocarbon dating, micromorphological analysis, sedimentary ancient-DNA (sedaDNA) analysis, and tephrochronological determination, all aimed at offering deeper insights into site-formation processes, the chronology of sediment deposition, and environmental conditions during the Upper Pleistocene. In accordance with this, the study emphasizes that sampling for the application of modern analytical methods within archaeological science can successfully be integrated with the requirements of rescue excavations, even within the constraints of highlylimited research.
This paper will present 24 coins that arrived at the thenArchaeo-logical Department of the National Museum (today the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb), mostly while it was directed byJ. Brun & scaron;mid. These are Indian coins, and Greek coins from Bactria and Greek possessions in India, as well as Indo-Scythian and Kushan coins. Since this is a part of the history of the ancient world that is poorly presented or is not known at all in the Republic of Croatia, before the actual analysis of the numismatic material is carried out, their historical context will be given-that is, the polities from which they come will be presented. In addition to the analysis of the depictions and inscriptions, the manner in which these objects entered the National Museum will be given, where possible.
This paper presents the results of research into the previously unknown ancient land division in the Zagreb metropolitan area. Numerous remains of linear structures were identified by interpretation of the available digital terrain model (DTM) made for the City of Zagreb in 2012 and the state airborne laser scanning (ALS) conducted in 2023. Mapping in GIS enabled the identification of structures that correspond with the Roman metric system of land division into 20 x 20 acti, i.e. approximately710 x 710 metres. This facilitated reconstruction of the orientation of the Roman cadastre. The interpretation of the ALS data of the 1080-km2 area revealed the remains of limites in the area, spanning across 700 km2. Two land-division layouts of different orientation can be detected. At numerous locations, regular rows of tumuli were detected, of Noric-Pannonian type, that follow the centuriation axes. A total of 575 tumuli were recognized. Tumuli were also detected along the ancient communication routes, which do not always correspond with theland-division layouts. The interpretation of the ALS data revealed the presence of around 7.2 kilometres of ancient main roads in the Turopolje area, around 4 kilometres in the Sesvete area, and around 30 kilometres of vicinal roads altogether. The field survey encompassed onlya small portion of the area examined by ALS. Tumuli were recognized in the terrain morphology, while the remains of centuriation could only rarely be observed, as variations in altitude compared to the surrounding terrain. The knowledge of the ancient landscape of this area has been supplemented through this research.
