
Nilio Latreille (Tenebrionidae: Nilioninae) previously comprised 42 species distributed across three subgenera: N. (Nilio) Latreille (with 34 species), N. (Micronilio) Pic and N. (Linio) Bouchard & Bousquet (each containing four species). Based on examination of type material of 30 Nilio (Nilio) species and other 462 specimens from national and international collections, this study describes five new species: N. (N.) domingosi Macari & Almeida sp. nov., N. (N.) monnei Macari & Almeida sp. nov., N. (N.) mukambu Macari & Almeida sp. nov., N. (N.) pachamama Macari & Almeida sp. nov. and N. (N.) panicaseus Macari & Almeida sp. nov. This study brings the total number of Nilio extant species to 47, with 39 now assigned to N. (Nilio).
A new species of the challenging genus Sympycnus Loew is described from the Cerrado biome in Brasília municipality, Federal District, Brazil: Sympycnus monnei sp. nov. An illustrated dichotomous key is provided for a subset of Neotropical species characterized by yellow antennae and males with modified tarsomeres of mid leg. Male specimens of the new species were collected and are fully described. High-quality photographs from external morphology and genitalic structures are also provided.
Adelopsis miguelmonnei Gomyde & Gnaspini sp. nov. is described from the Brazilian Amazon and placed in the ascutellaris species group. This species is remarkable for its minute size and for being the first of the group described from northern Brazil. Morphological analyses highlight the difficulty in delimiting species and the need for a future taxonomic revision of this group.
Cendiuna Galileo & Martins, 1991 is a genus of the tribe Hemilophini known from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, and currently comprising five species. The genus is mainly diagnosed by having the pronotum depressed at the mid-posterior region, and elytra slightly widened toward apical region, with light dense pubescence laterally. Besides that, its species present patterns of firefly-like coloration. Herein, we describe Cendiuna migueli sp. nov. from the state of Paraná (Brazil). Additionally, we provide a new record of Cendiuna puranga Galileo & Martins, 1991 from Paraná and point out new variations in the species.
A new species of Eupogonius LeConte, 1852 (Desmiphorini) is described from Mexico: E. monnei sp. nov., from Nayarit, Jalisco and Michoacán. Three new state records of Eupogonius species are reported from Mexico, and one new country record from Guatemala.
Abstract One new species is described in Ectenessini: Ectenessa monnei sp. nov. Five new species are described in Rhinotragini: Eclipta monnei sp. nov.; Ecliptoides pepemujicai sp. nov.; Ischasia carlosgardeli sp. nov.; Odontocera monnei sp. nov.; and Odontocera susanae sp. nov. New country records are reported for Eclipta taraleaphila (Tavakilian & Peñaherrera-Leiva, 2003) and Ecliptophanes chacunfrancozi (Tavakilian & Peñaherrera-Leiva, 2003). New Brazilian state records are reported for Ecliptoides pilosipes (Peñaherrera-Leiva & Tavakilian, 2004), Phygopoda fulvitarsis Gounelle, 1911, and Pseudophygopoda subvestita (White, 1855). Panamapoda Clarke, 2014 is synonymized with Pseudophygopoda Tavakilian & Peñaherrera-Leiva, 2007. Therefore, Pseudophygopoda panamensis (Giesbert, 1996) is a new combination. The differences between Pseudophygopoda Tavakilian & Peñaherrera, 2007, Paraphygopoda Clarke, 2014, and Paramelitta Clarke, 2014 are reported. The correct sex of the holotypes of Bomarion anormale Thomson, 1867 and Ectenessa ornatipennis Tippmann, 1960 is reported in the remarks of Ectenessa monnei sp. nov.
The genus Macrocis Reitter, 1878, is reinstated to accommodate the species previously placed in the Cis taurus species group, as follows: Macrocis bahiensis (Pic, 1916), new combination; Macrocis cornelli (Lawrence, 1971), new combination; Macrocis diabolicus Reitter, 1878, reinstated status; Macrocis grandicornis Pic, 1917, reinstated status; Macrocis longipilis (Pic, 1930), new combination; Macrocis pubescens (Friedenreich, 1881), new combination; Macrocis rufescens Pic, 1922, reinstated status; Macrocis setifer Gorham, 1883, reinstated status; Macrocis taurus Reitter, 1878, reinstated status; Macrocis testaceimembris Pic, 1916, reinstated status; and Macrocis testaceus Pic, 1916, with the unnecessary replacement name Cis kawanabei Lopes-Andrade, 2002, proposed as its junior synonym. The genus Trichapus Friedenreich, 1881, previously synonymized with Cis Latreille, 1797 and treated as part of the Cis taurus species group, is here synonymized with Macrocis. In addition, we describe Macrocis monnei Lopes-Andrade, Souza-Gonçalves & Sandoval-Gómez sp. nov., the first species of Macrocis recorded from the state of Tocantins, in the North Region of Brazil.
Calycomyza Hendel is an important genus of Agromyzidae that includes several agricultural pests. Here, we describe a new species, Calycomyza monnei sp. nov., from Minas Gerais, Brazil, and provide images of the adult and male terminalia.
Abstract Except for Eligmoderma politum Nonfried, 1895, all known species of Eligmoderma are illustrated, some of them for the first time, with notes on them. Eligmoderma spinicolle Aurivillius, 1924 is revalidated. Although it was not possible to locate the holotype of Eligmoderma ziczac Nonfried, 1895, and we do not know whether the specimen still exists, we identified two specimens that we believe belong to this species, based on the details provided in the original description. Eligmoderma convexicolle Aurivillius, 1924 is synonymized with E. trifasciatum Aurivillius, 1924. Eligmoderma monnei sp. nov. is described from Venezuela.
A taxonomic review of the monotypic genus Trochalonota Westwood, 1833, endemic to the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil (Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro), is presented. Trochalonota badia (Germar, 1823) is redescribed, and its aedeagus is described and illustrated for the first time. The study further provides a diagnosis, a detailed nomenclatural history, and photographs of both syntypes and non-type material. A lectotype and paralectotypes are designated, and a distribution map is included. In addition, the genus is compared with Pixis Chevrolat, 1843, which has been considered in the literature as the most morphologically similar genus occurring in Brazil. A nomenclatural history of Pixis and remarks on its diversity and type species are also provided.
Erioscelis emarginata (Mannerheim, 1829) is a Brazilian cyclocephaline beetle that pollinates Araceae. Here, the species is redescribed and a close relative, Erioscelis monnei sp. nov., is newly described from the Serra do Cipó region (Minas Gerais state, Brazil) based on two field expeditions to its type locality. Morphological differences were described mainly for the punctation of the abdomen and elytra, the elytral shape, as well as the male genitalia and the mouthparts. Additionally, an updated identification key for the species of the genus is provided, and a distribution map of E. emarginata is presented for the first time.
Monneocrates gen. nov. is proposed herein to accommodate the enigmatic species Stenocrates nasutus Dechambre, 1979 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae), resulting in a new combination. Additionally, Monneocrates parabolicus sp. nov. is also described. The new genus is placed within the tribe Phileurini based on the characters of the mentum: laterally expanded and nearly entirely covering the first labial palpomere in ventral view. Illustrations, diagnoses, and a geographical distribution map are provided for Monneocrates species, including a first record of S. nasutus from Brazil. Finally, a discussion on the diagnostic characters used to define the new genus and the differences of its species from Stenocrates Burmeister, 1847, as well as the justification for placing the new genus within Phileurini, are presented.
Hypotelus monnei Paiva & Caron sp. nov., is a new species of minute rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, Piestinae) described from Brazil. We have also added the new species to the dichotomous key of Hypotelus Erichson, 1839 and verified the monophyly of the genus, now including the new species. Hypotelus monnei sp. nov. is similar to H. corniculatus Bortoluzzi & Caron, 2017, but differs by having the head distinctly darker than the pronotum, frontal processes one-fourth to one-third the length of the antennal scape, antenna shorter than that of H. corniculatus with antennomere IV subquadrate, and sternite VIII with sinuous posterior margin. The new species shares morphological characters with four species that comprise a clade previously referred to as Clade C. Until now, the species of this clade were distributed from Costa Rica to Brazil and concentrated in tropical rainforests. The new species represents the southernmost and easternmost distribution of Clade C, and is the first species of this clade to occur in Brazil. With this addition, Brazil now records three species of Hypotelus.
Arnaudius Grossi & Bartolozzi, 2011 is a stag beetle genus endemic to Peru, currently comprising three described species. In this study, we describe a fourth species for the genus, Arnaudius monnei Soares & Grossi sp. nov., based on two specimens collected in Machu Picchu, Peru. This new species shares all the diagnostic features of the genus, particularly those related to the male genitalia, the most unambiguous. The description of this new species calls attention to the unknown diversity of Lucanidae in the Tropical Andes, a region with high endemism, but which still remains largely undersampled. The new species is described, illustrated, and compared with the other species of the genus. Additionally, we provide an updated identification key for the males of the species of Arnaudius and a known distribution map.
The study of the original description and the holotype – and only known specimen – in the Natural History Museum, London, allows us to transfer the Brazilian Amazon species Choeridium tridenticeps Arrow, 1913, currently treated in Ateuchus Weber, 1801 (= Choeridium Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau & Audinet-Serville, 1828), to the genus Canthidium Erichson, 1847. Features such as a trituberculate head, protibiae serrated along the outer edge, and a row of deep punctures covering the posterior edge of the pronotum are alien to Ateuchus, but commonly found in Canthidium. At the same time, the specimen matches all known diagnostic features of Canthidium, with the posterior pronotal punctation placing it in the subgenus Neocanthidium Martínez et al., 1964. The new combination Canthidium (Neocanthidium) tridenticeps (Arrow, 1913) is thus established. Canthidium now includes 176 species. The C. tridenticeps holotype was collected during the Amazon leg of the 1911 Stanford Expedition to Brazil, along the Madeira-Mamoré Railroad, then under construction. We provide coordinates for each of the construction camps visited by the collectors W.M. Mann and F. Baker, including Camp 28 (09°38′57″S, 64°58′05″W), in modern Mutum-Paraná (Porto Velho, Rondônia), the type locality of C. tridenticeps. This is a preliminary contribution from our ongoing Ateuchus and Canthidium revisionary projects.
Nyctocrepis is a lineage of moderate-sized (1-2 cm) fireflies endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest, in Brazil. All three Nyctocrepis species are brightly-colored, presumably diurnal, and feature narrow distribution ranges. Herein we describe and illustrate Nyctocrepis monnei sp. nov., recorded from an urban natural park, the Floresta da Tijuca, in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. This new species is unique among its congenerics by the following combination of features: smaller length (~0.8-1.1 cm); frontoclypeo-labral suture membranous; elytron subparallel-sided, pronotum and pronotal disc totally black – except for pair of anterolateral vitreous spots –, and elytron with basal half orangish-yellow and apical half dark-brown; antennal lamellae about 2-3.3× longer than core antennomere; phallus with dorsal plate ridges feebly developed, paramere inner margin slightly concave at apical half, basally smooth, and with an apical concavity at the outer margin. Our study highlights the underestimation of firefly diversity even within large metropolises, and the value of urban parks in protecting endemic species and biodiversity at large in the Atlantic Rainforest.
The genus Marilia, with 83 extant species distributed across the Oriental, Australasian, and Neotropical regions, is the most diverse within the caddisfly family Odontoceridae. In Brazil, 28 species are currently known, 15 of which occur in the Atlantic Forest – one of the world’s 36 major biodiversity hotspots. In this study, we describe and illustrate two new species of Marilia from Atlantic Forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil: Marilia monnei sp. nov. and Marilia catiae sp. nov. Additionally, we expand the known geographical distribution of Marilia maxakali Bonfá-Neto, Salles & Vilarino, 2023 to include the states of Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina. This study significantly contributes to bridging the knowledge gaps on caddisflies in the Atlantic Forest, resulting from both Wallacean and Linnean shortfalls.
Abstract We present the first comprehensive survey of Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) from the Parque Estadual de Porto Ferreira, São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 349 specimens representing 101 species in five subfamilies were collected. All the species are illustrated, as well as others used for morphological comparison. We provide taxonomic, morphological and/or distributional information on all the species. Two species are described as new: Eclipta migueli sp. nov. and Olivensa ferreirensis sp. nov. Seven species are recorded for the first time from São Paulo State: Cosmocerus strigosus Guérin-Méneville, 1844, Alcidion ludicrum (Germar, 1823), Lophopoeum kawense Roguet, 2022, Polymitoleiopus nutrix (Nascimento, Santos-Silva & Flechtmann, 2021), Macronemus analis (Pascoe, 1866), Macronemus filicornis (Thomson, 1861), and Adesmiella cordipicta Lane, 1959. For the first time, we report and illustrate the male of Aegomorphus geminus (Galileo & Martins, 2012) and the females of Hesycha jataiensis Galileo, Martins & Santos-Silva, 2015, Polymitoleiopus nutrix, and Adesmiella cordipicta, the latter described and designated as neotype. Hyperplatys canus (Bates, 1863) is proposed as a new synonym of H. argentinus Berg, 1889. The genus Criopsis Thomsom, 1861 is transferred from Acanthoderini to Acanthocinini. Additional nomenclatural notes include corrections to the species-group name of Probatiomimus signifer (Thomson, 1865) and remarks on Pentheochaetes mysticus var. mediomaculatus Gilmour, 1957.
