
The activities of libraries rely heavily on paper production from acquisition to facilities upkeep which has hazardous effect on the environment. This study used Literature review to discover ways libraries can adopt nature-friendly practices in library operations. This study explored environmental effect of libraries, provided ways libraries can adopt green practices from library facilities to library practices, also discussed green library initiatives in Nigeria. The benefits of green libraries practices are enormous as it reduces environmental impact, saves cost, enhance users’ experience, and enhances library reputation etc. Despite the enormous benefit of library “going green”, there are challenges that hamper implementation of green library practices such as budget constraints, resistance to change and absence of green library policy. Thus, the study recommended developing a green library policy and securing funding.
Libraries has transformed from just been custodian of knowledge to evolving information landscape. This study sought to discover the changing faces of libraries with emphasis on issues and serendipities. The study explored the prevalent issues faced by modern day libraries like fund constraints, technological advancement, ever changing patrons’ needs and copyright and intellectual property issues. The study also discussed the Evolution and innovations in libraries from leveraging technology for service delivery to enhancing access to information (open access initiatives, collaboration/partnership, information literacy programs, community engagement, equity & inclusion and multilingual resources) to enhancing users’ experiences (library space and design, personalized-service, user-centric design & service and mobile application). This study also further discussed future trends in libraries stating how technologies such as AI & Machine learning, Virtual reality and augmented reality, sustainable practices, user-focus services, reimagined physical space will further transform the role and face of both libraries and librarians. The study concluded that library and the role of librarians will continually evolve and persist as invaluable resources for communities worldwide.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a universal framework for addressing global economic, social, and environmental challenges. Recognizing the centrality of access to information in achieving these goals, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has advocated for the critical roles of libraries and information services in the actualization of this developmental agenda. The paper theoretically x-ray how SDGs can be actualized through information services, and what this implies for library and information science professionals. The paper adopted a conceptual research methodology based on the analysis of current literature and policy documents. In order synthesize knowledge on information services for sustainable development, the article focuses on secondary sources rather than primary sources. The paper explored how information services across various dimensions address sustainable development. The discussion highlights the multifaceted contributions of information services to sustainable development across social, economic, and environmental domains. It also examines the factors that determine to the extent to which information services can contribute to the realization of sustainable development. The paper concluded that information services are vital to the actualization of SDGs across multiple dimensions and dynamics. However, the effectiveness of libraries and information professionals in advancing sustainable development through information services delivery depends on addressing critical determining factors.
The invention of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed learning, causing the emergence of different learning patterns which blended learning is part of. This underscores why this study explores undergraduates’ perceptions and anxieties on AI integration into blended learning. The population of this study is 1523 undergraduates of Kwara State University, Malete, Nigeria. Krejcie and Morgan Table was used to select 371 respondents who are chosen randomly. A self-developed questionnaire was used for data collection. The Cronbach Alpha reliability of the questionnaire was 0.72. Data collected was downloaded in csv format and analysed with SPSS, using frequencies, percentages and mean ( X ̅). Findings revealed that the respondents are apprehensive because the use of AI for learning will cause changes in teaching ( X ̅ = 2.94), lack of control on the use of AI for learning ( X ̅ = 2.85) and use of AI for learning will cause overdependence on it ( X ̅ = 2.80). Furthermore, the respondents perceived that AI is powerful for solving complex learning problems ( X ̅ = 334), enable learning solutions ( X ̅ = 3.34), enhance learning outcomes ( X ̅ = 3.32), personalise learning experience ( X ̅ = 3.32), strengthen digital literacy skills ( X ̅ = 3.27) and make learning efficient ( X ̅ = 3.25). Moreso, AI makes the respondents learn remotely ( X ̅ = 3.37), creates flexible pathways for learning ( X ̅ = 3.30) and allows access to information about their courses ( X ̅ = 3.26). However, poor Internet bandwidth ( X ̅ = 3.40), inadequate funding of the university to acquire AI infrastructure needed for blended learning ( X ̅ = 3.06), lecturers resisted using AI for learning enhancement ( X ̅ = 2.85) and doubt of the quality and accuracy of AI-generated contents ( X ̅ = 2.82) affect the integration of AI into blended learning. This study concludes that undergraduates of LIS have different perceptions and anxieties about AI.
Information is an integral pillar of the progress and development of every human society. However, the need to spread information has prompted some people to deliberately (or otherwise) share false, wrong, fabricated or inaccurate information. This study examines information disorders in the digital age, with the aim of gaining insight into students’ awareness and perceptions at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Nigeria. This study focused on ascertaining the awareness, perceptions, sources and causes of information disorders among the students. Using descriptive survey design, the population of this study was 1,913 HND II students of the Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IICT), Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Nigeria, encompassing the departments of Computer Science, Office Technology and Management (OTM) and Mass Communication. Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size table was used to arrive at 218 samples who were randomly selected. A self-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. From the expected questionnaires, only 163, representing 74.98%, were fully filled and adequate for analysis. Data obtained were analysed and presented in simple percentage, frequency table and mean ( X ) using the IBM SPSS 26th edition. The findings demonstrated that the respondents have high awareness of fake news, rumours, satire or parody and partially aware of filter bubbles. The respondents also perceived information disorders as information fabricated for the purposes of drawing attention, mislead the people, promote personal agenda and amusement. On the other hand, they were doubting whether information fabricated for political purposes is information disorders. Notably, findings also pointed out that information disorders are being shared by friends, family and relatives, government agencies, politicians and journalists, while celebrities share less information disorders. Moreso, the students perceived that information disorders are caused due to their urge to share current information, unconscious misrepresent truth and unaware of information disorders. This study concludes that the students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Nigeria, lack adequate awareness of information disorders, which affected their perceptions of it. One of the recommendations of this study is that lecturers should endeavour to be teaching information disorders in all information related courses.
The Institute of Finance Management (IFM) and Moshi Co-operative University are committed to fostering research and academic excellence. As part of this commitment, the two institutional libraries have subscribed to a range of electronic resources through COTUL, namely Emerald, EBSCOHOST, Taylor and Francis, Research4Life, and JSTOR. However, there is a noticeable underutilisation of these tools by students and staff, which hampers research output, academic growth, and return on investment. This study investigated the utilisation of electronic resources at the two institutional libraries. Using a mixed-methods approach that included structured questionnaires and interviews, data were obtained from 209 of the 250 targeted respondents, yielding an 83.6% response rate. The interviews were conducted with 14 academic staff, library staff, and students. The findings reveal a critical awareness gap; while users are aware of e-resources, they underutilize subject-specific databases, instead relying on Google Scholar. Key challenges identified include a lack of awareness, unreliable internet, and complex authentication. Opportunities lie in targeted training and marketing. The study concludes by proposing a strategic roadmap to unlock this potential, recommending enhanced, multi-format training, aggressive marketing, website optimization, collaboration with academic staff, and infrastructural improvements to maximize the return on investment in e-resources.
Everyone owning or accessing digital devices such as phones, laptops, computers or tablets consciously or unconsciously engaged in digital reading. Moreover, the evolution of AI has transitioned digital reading to a new level. This study explores students’ awareness and utilisation of AI for enhancement of their digital reading. Employing narrative design, data was collected from 27 students of Library and Information Science in Kwara State, Nigeria. The participants were purposively selected because of the researchers’ observations of their knowledge about different AI tools and their proficiencies in reading with the AI tools. Semi-structured interview was held with the participants. Findings showed that the students are aware of and used ChatGPT, Readpo, Texti and Speechify to skim or scan in order to identify the main points associated with their academics such as assignments, projects and forming notes. Furthermore, findings showed that reading with AI breaks down the key points about ideas, saves time in knowing details, summarizes and repackages information in ways that suit the students’ need. However, the challenges limiting the benefits of reading with AI tools include lecturers’ discouragements, grammatical complexities and risky for intellectual development. This study concludes that AI enhances the digital reading experience of the students by significantly changing the sources students consult in accessing information and enriching their knowledge. One of the recommendations of this study is that Library and Information Science (LIS) schools in Kwara State, Nigeria, should organize seminars or workshops to train their students on AI literacy. This will equip the students with the skills of humanizing AI-generated content in order to minimize the grammatical complexities encountered in reading with AI.
This paper explores the legal information management in an open access ecosystem with emphasis on how legal information institutes, government agencies, non-governmental agencies, university libraries and other stakeholders enhance access to free legal information resources. The objectives of the study are to examine the key institutions and stakeholders supporting open access legal information initiatives, to analyses how stakeholders create, manage, and disseminate legal information resources in an open access ecosystem, to investigate the challenges of sustaining open access legal information services. The study adopted a conceptual research design relying on secondary sources of data by reviewing scholarly articles, books, conference papers, policy documents related to open access legal information management. The findings of the study showed that open access is phenomenal in advancing legal scholarship in the digital era by reducing barriers created by subscription based legal information resources. The challenges identified include weak digital infrastructure in developing countries, limited awareness among users, poor funding and dependence on donor support. The study concluded that collaboration among stakeholders would promote equitable access to legal scholarship for legal scholars, law students, and the general public. It further recommended increased awareness, adequate budgetary allocation, and supportive government policies to enhance fair access to open legal information resources.
This study aims to map the intellectual landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in Electric Vehicles (EVs) from 1995 to 2024, highlighting global research trends, key contributors, and emerging thematic areas through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis. This is a quantitative study employing bibliometric methods to analyze 1245 English-language documents retrieved from the Scopus database. Using Bibliometrix (R-package) and VOSviewer, the analysis covered publication trends, citation patterns, co-authorship networks, institutional and country-level contributions, and keyword co-occurrences. Key bibliometric laws (e.g., Lotka’s and Bradford’s) and performance indicators (e.g., h-index, g-index) were used to assess productivity and impact. The results reveal a strong upward trajectory in AI–EV research, with an annual growth rate of 22.69% and a surge in publications after 2016. China, India, and the U.S. are the most prolific contributors, while collaboration networks show increasing global integration. Core research themes include battery management, smart charging, autonomous driving, and reinforcement learning, with deep learning and predictive modeling playing central roles. This is the first large-scale, longitudinal bibliometric study to systematically analyze the evolution of AI–EV research over a 30-year span. The findings offer a structured knowledge base for academics, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, highlighting key trends, research gaps, and opportunities for future innovation in AI-driven electric mobility.
This study investigated sustainability readiness and the adoption of green technologies in Nigerian university libraries. The research was motivated by the growing need for libraries to align with global sustainability goals through environmentally responsible operations. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 327 professional librarians across Nigerian universities through a validated online questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze responses, while Spearman’s correlation and simple linear regression tested the hypotheses. Findings revealed that Nigerian university libraries exhibit moderate sustainability readiness, characterized by increasing awareness and managerial support but constrained by weak policy frameworks, inadequate funding and limited infrastructure. Libraries have largely adopted low-cost green practices such as digital resource use and energy-efficient lighting, while more capital-intensive technologies, including renewable energy systems and recycling programs, remain underutilized. The study established a strong, positive and statistically significant relationship between sustainability readiness and the adoption of green technologies. The study concludes that Nigerian university libraries are transitioning from conceptual awareness to operational sustainability, though progress remains uneven. It recommends that university administrations develop clear sustainability policies, allocate dedicated funding, and strengthen staff capacity through training. Professional associations and government agencies should also establish regulatory frameworks and partnerships to promote green innovation. These actions will enable libraries to serve as catalysts for environmental responsibility in higher education.
This study investigates librarians’ propensity to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for knowledge sharing practices in Nigeria based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The study examines librarians’ awareness, perceived level of usefulness and ease of use of these tools for knowledge sharing. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised 102 librarians who attended the 2024 Nigerian Library Association (NLA) Information Technology Section Conference, held at the University of Abuja from October 8 to 13, 2024. A purposive sampling technique was used to select respondents who were members of the conference’s professional WhatsApp group. Data were collected using a self-developed, structured questionnaire administered via Google Forms. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 22). Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages were used to summarize and interpret the data, while tables and charts were employed to present the findings. Findings showed that of the 102 respondents, 44 (43.1%) were female, while 58 (56.9%) were male. Majority of the librarians 96 (94.12%) are aware of AI technologies such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and chatbots, 97 (95.10%) had knowledge of AI applications in enhancing knowledge-sharing practices and 93 (91.18%) are aware of AI tools facilitating communication. Results of perceived usefulness indicated a high level of usefulness with 96.1% acknowledging the relevance of AI tools and 88.24% agreed to the ease of use of AI tools for knowledge sharing, indicating a high perceived ease of use. The study concluded that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were strong predictors of technology acceptance in organizational settings. Consequently, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is reaffirmed as a robust framework for explaining librarians’ intentions to adopt AI-powered technologies for knowledge-sharing.
Knowledge management has become a key factor in the success of all organisations. Information and communication technology (ICT) remains the primary technology that facilitates the sharing of information and knowledge within any organisation. As such, its usage is prominent in any form of knowledge management initiative. The value of knowledge management is greater when made available to the right people at the right time. Thus, knowledge sharing is facilitated through information and communication technology, including computers, telephones, e-mail, databases, video conferencing and many more. This paper investigates the practice of knowledge capture, storage, sharing, and utilisation among healthcare professionals in the Southern Highlands’ district hospitals. Simple random sampling enabled the selection of two hundred (201) staff for participation in the study. Quantitative data generated from a questionnaire survey were analysed using SPSS version 20.0 to create frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The study found there was no any form of standard in KM practice among the staff; lack of commitment by the hospital management towards enhancing KM practices and limited communication facilities as significant challenges to effective KM in hospitals. The study concludes that while staff in hospitals are positively in knowledge management Practices, limited ICT facilities hinder its effective implementation. It recommends that hospital management to avail the KM infrastructure to ensure effective KM practices, training and retraining of staff on the importance of KM practices and install all necessary structures to support knowledge management effectively and efficiently.
Digital information resources have become a vital part of an academic library. Engineering Educational Institutions are facing increasing competition from a global digital environment and ongoing change in user needs and expectations of information services. This study examines digital resources utilization among undergraduates in Kwara State. This study adopted a descriptive research design and questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Simple random sampling technique was used for selecting the sample for this study and the data collected was analyzed using frequency table, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that e-books e-journals, e-newspapers, e-research reports and e-lecture notes are the types of digital resources used by undergraduate students in universities in Kwara State. The findings further revealed academics, online registration, research, communication with friends and colleagues and sourcing for materials for project writing are the purposes of digital resources utilisation among undergraduate students in universities in Kwara State. However, the findings of the study also indicate that poor power supply, cost of online databases, lack of training on internet use, slow bandwidth and poor awareness are the challenges militating against the use of digital resources by undergraduate students in universities in Kwar State. The study concluded that students actively engage with various types of digital resources, including e-books, e-journals, e-newspapers, e-research reports, and e-lecture notes. Notably, e-books, e-journals, e-newspapers, and e-research reports were found to be the most highly utilized resources, reflecting students’ increasing reliance on electronic formats for academic work. The study recommended that Universities should continue to expand and diversify their digital resource collections to include more subject-relevant and up-to-date e-books, journals, and research materials.
In many domains of knowledge, a vast amount of academic literature is available, resulting in dynamic shifts in the information demands of researchers in any subject. They require current data at a specific moment. The study’s goals were to determine how old papers are in the modern day, find out how many citations Indian academics often cite, and investigate which national and international publications Indian scholars prefer. Citation analysis methodologies were used to achieve the aims of the study. The conclusions are based on a review of 18,638 references submitted to five of India’s leading LIS universities. According to a study, PhD level library and information science scholars mention on average 32-year-old materials, with 132.18 references cited on average in their thesis. The researchers concluded that the study strongly advises that library and information science academics pay close attention to emerging or novel research ideas in the area rather than relying on well-established notions. Supervisors and LIS departments in India can realistically use these findings as a criterion to assess and even guide doctoral research methodologies. This insight could lead to new approaches to integrating more contemporary research and creative concepts into LIS doctoral work, which could influence research training and curriculum focus.
The adoption of ChatGPT in reference services delivery among academic libraries is perceived as an innovation aimed at replacing traditional reference services. This study examines the challenges and opportunities of implementing ChatGPT in reference service delivery within academic libraries. A systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses) framework. Various databases were consulted, including DOAJ, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and Emerald. A total of 123 articles were retrieved, of which 47 (38.2%) met the selection criteria. The study is guided by the theory of diffusion of innovation. The theory provides effective frameworks for explaining the adoption and use of technology inorganisations. The findings revealed that ChatGPT offers several benefits when integrated into reference service delivery.These benefits include its ability to provide prompt responses to users, 24/7 accessibility, research assistance, support for information literacy, and information retrieval. The study established that, despite its potential for libraries, ChatGPT has several drawbacks, including a lack of privacy and security, the potential to provide incorrect answers to users, and inherent bias. The study revealed that the integration of ChatGPT in reference service delivery across academic libraries will not completely replace the role of reference librarians, as they will be required to intervene and respond to users' queries should ChatGPT fail. The study recommends that librarians acquire the necessary skills to use ChatGPT for providing reference services. They should also train users to become skilful information consumers with the ability to evaluate content generated by ChatGPT.
The global shift toward open science has positioned open data as a critical component of transparent, collaborative, and impactful research. Research librarians play a strategic role in supporting open data practices through research data management, advocacy, and scholarly communication services. However, empirical evidence on their preparedness for open data engagement in Nigeria is limited. This study examined the knowledge and perception of open data practices among research librarians in Nigeria, with a specific focus on their level of knowledge, perceptions, perceived benefits, and barriers to adoption. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and targeted research librarians in selected federal universities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. A total enumeration approach was used, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered electronically. Out of 125 questionnaires distributed, 117 valid responses were retrieved and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The findings revealed that research librarians possess a moderate to high level of conceptual knowledge of open data practices and demonstrate generally positive perceptions toward open data. Librarians strongly recognized the academic, institutional, and professional benefits of open data, including enhanced research visibility, collaboration, and professional relevance. However, the study also identified significant barriers to adoption, notably inadequate training, limited technological infrastructure, insufficient institutional policies, funding constraints, and legal and ethical concerns. The study concludes that while Nigerian research librarians are positively disposed and conceptually prepared for open data practices, structural and institutional limitations hinder effective implementation. It recommends targeted capacity building, supportive policies, improved infrastructure, and stronger institutional commitment to advance open data practices in Nigerian research libraries.
The indispensable nature of knowledge as an asset every organisation prioritises has made its sharing important. It has been identified that existing studies have concentrated on knowledge sharing (KS) in universities, libraries and corporations. This gap begs for studies that will report the status of KS in polytechnic education, thus resulting in designing this study to understand the enablers and barriers to KS among lecturers in Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Nigeria. Using descriptive survey design, a self-structured questionnaire was administered to 53 lecturers in the Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IICT), comprising the departments of Computer Science, Library and Information Science, Mass Communication and Office Technology Management. Data collected was analysed with the IBM SPSS (v25) and presented in tables, frequencies and mean ( X ̅). Findings revealed that the respondents strongly share research knowledge ( X ̅ = 3.38) and scientific knowledge ( X ̅ = 3.28) through social media ( X ̅ = 3.33) and conferences/seminars/workshops ( X ̅ = 3.23). Notably, RSS feeds is less used for KS among the respondents. The technological factors enabling KS include technical support ( X ̅ = 3.03), availability of ICT tools ( X ̅ = 2.97) ease-of-use of technologies ( X ̅ = 2.92) and strong Internet bandwidth ( X ̅ = 2.72). Also, KS is enabled by personal motivation and trust in others ( X ̅ = 3.18), confidence in oneself ( X ̅ = 2.97) and attitudes towards others ( X ̅ = 2.92). In the same vein, leadership support ( X ̅ = 2.82), organisational culture ( X ̅ = 2.77) and reward systems ( X ̅ = 2.72) enabled KS practices among the respondents, while organisational structure ( X ̅ = 2.46) is not. This study concludes by noting a hybrid KS landscape in Kwara State Polytechnic, where traditional and digital channels coexist.
Career guidance and counselling information (CGCI) is vital for encouraging girls’ participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It allows them to express and implement their innovative ideas while contributing to their personal and national development. This study identified factors that impede secondary school girls’ use of guidance and counselling information for science subjects/STEM careers choices. The study also assessed the impact of students not utilising guidance and counselling information for STEM career choices. Through a cross-sectional descriptive design, data were collected by using questionnaires, focus group discussions, and interviews. Thematic analysis was applied for qualitative data, while quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics with IBM SPSS version 25. Findings disclosed that parents’ influence on their daughters’ career choice is a significant challenge affecting the use of CGCI that they access from their teacher counsellors. However, such a challenge has a strong effect on girls’ STEM career choices. The study concludes that, though this study has reported parents as a challenge to the use of CGCI by girl students, it is important for secondary school CGCI programs to actively involve parents in providing CGCI to girl students. Such teamwork will improve the provision of comprehensive career guidance and counselling information, ultimately improving girls’ decision-making on science subjects choice, especially when joining Form Three.
There has been a continuous rise in the use of gamification in the non-game environment of libraries, however little is known about the influence of game literacy on gamified library services. Hence, this study investigates the influence of game literacy on gamified library services. This study is a systematic review, which adopted the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) to select twenty-three (23) articles. Therefore, the literature search strategies were structured with specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Critical Appraisal Skill Programme (CASP) assessment tool was used to assess and confirm the quality of the final selected literature. Findings showed that there is low level of game literacy among librarians, highlighting that librarians that are game players have more general knowledge in providing gamified library services. Results showed that the game elements adopted by libraries include points, leaderboards, grades, achievements, communication, rewards, virality, self-expression, competition, immersion, role support, flow enhancement, progress tracking, clues, quests, fun, motivation, and sociability. Library orientation, library promotion, information literacy education, book search and returns, and information retrieval were the library services that were gamified. Findings showed that game literacy influences librarians’ ability to engage in gamified library services. The study concludes that game literacy plays a pivotal role in the successful implementation of gamified library services. Thus, librarians must prioritise developing game literacy to effectively engage in gamified library services. Future studies should explore strategies for enhancing game literacy among librarians, particularly in regions or institutions where it remains low like developing countries.
This study examines 350 tribal college students from state university connected colleges’ awareness, usage patterns, and preferences for traditional print and electronic resources. The goal is to comprehend views toward library resources generally, access concerns, and gender-based inequities. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square testing, correlation analysis, and Likert scale evaluation were among the methods utilized to examine the data from a structured questionnaire using SPSS. According to the results, 46% of students had an equal preference for print and e-resources, with 32.9% favoring e-resources and 21.1% favoring print. The greatest mean score of 3.90 (SD = 0.82) was found for library visits for printed materials, whereas the total mean score for e-resource familiarity was 2.38 (SD = 1.06), indicating modest understanding. Knowledge of e-resources was negatively correlated with knowledge of print resources (r = −0.208, p < 0.01). Lack of digital abilities (80.8%) and technical problems (82.7%) were frequent obstacles. In order to close the gap in tribal academic contexts, these findings emphasize the necessity of hybrid resource systems and focused digital literacy initiatives.
