Abstract This chapter explores how the role of prisons has evolved, from their medieval use for confinement or fines to modern institutions focused on punishment, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. It highlights global discrepancies in imprisonment rates, with the USA having far higher incarceration rates than countries like Scandinavia. The chapter details how overcrowded prisons exacerbate violence, self-harm, and poor mental health among prisoners. It examines the failures of rehabilitation, noting that many offenders reoffend due to insufficient support, limited programmes, and external factors like unemployment. Finally, the chapter discusses parole complexities and advocates for rethinking prison reform to lower recidivism and societal costs.
