Abstract The paper proposes that argumentation in medical consultations should be analyzed by considering consultations as part of a health communication ecosystem in which institutional norms and circulating discourses shape argumentative practices. It outlines a framework that conceptualizes medical consultations as sites where argumentative practices emerge from the interaction between three analytically distinct but interdependent layers: the interactional organization of talk, the institutional structuring of roles and norms, and the broader discursive environment in which medical knowledge circulates. These layers are linked through mechanisms of recontextualization, normative filtering, and epistemic positioning, which account for how external discourses and institutional constraints are selectively mobilized and transformed within situated interaction.
Abstract This paper explores the connection between emotions and argumentative inference in digital activists’ discourse on fashion sustainability. We explore this theoretical problem through an empirical approach, drawing on a corpus of activists’ Instagram messages posted during Fashion Revolution Week, a campaign launched to commemorate the 2013 Rana Plaza accident which killed more than a thousand garment workers. We reconstruct argumentative configurations ( Lucchini 2025 ) in the posts, focusing on the frequently occurring locus from termination and setting up ( Rigotti and Greco 2019 ). We analyse how emotions are expressed linguistically ( Micheli 2014 ) and how they interact with loci. Our findings show that the linguistic analysis of emotions needs to be complemented by an analysis of argumentative inference; and we introduce the concept of emotional dynamics to explain how argumentative inference can produce a change in emotions, moving from dysphoric emotions about a tragic accident towards hope for systemic change.
Abstract This study integrates the polylogue framework of argumentation ( Lewiński and Aakhus 2023 ) with discourse analysis to show how a polylogical argumentative activity is discursively co-constructed in a multiparty discussion on the issues Argentine tango dancers face, with the specific focus on the matter of inclusivity/exclusivity. It contributes to developing the polylogue framework by investigating the complexity of argumentation at a micro level by exploring the interdependence of its three aspects (i.e., players, positions, and places) in one interaction. In terms of place, the way the host frames the activity orients towards the intricacies of the discussed issue as a goal rather than the resolution of difference of opinion, which is taken up by the participants. The study also demonstrates the interrelation of the participants’ identities and their positions and the position dynamics within single participants. Furthermore, it shows how the difference among the participants’ views, even though they share a position, and the construction of alliances during the interaction adds to the multifacetedness of argumentative activity.
