Purpose Neonatal Hospital at home (HaH) supports early discharge from neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) while the hospital retains full clinical responsibility for the infant. However, early transfer places increased responsibility on parents. The aim of this study was therefore to explore parents’ experiences of the transition from the NICU to neonatal HaH with their preterm infant. Methods A qualitative interview study design was used. Data were analysed consistent with Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis. Results Ten parents participated in semi-structured interviews. Three themes were generated 1) Well prepared for the transition, 2) Certain issues of concern were present, 3) Returning home was a positive experience. Conclusion Parents of preterm infants experienced the transition from NICU to HaH care as positive. Education in infant care in the NICU, involvement in the discharge decision, and continuity of care in the home enhanced parents’ experiences of the transition.
