Global coastal erosion constitutes one of the most alarming problems in the spatial scenario of societies residing in these zones. Rapid climate change and rising sea levels can accelerate coastal erosion. Consequently, increased coastal erosion can severely damage coastal environments, hinder commercial activities, and disrupt tourism sectors. This work aims to analyze vulnerability to coastal erosion at the beaches of Bora, Crispim, and Marudá, in the northern portion of the Marapanim municipality, northeast of Pará State (Brazil). Thus, the goal is to develop physical vulnerability indices from the impacts of coastal erosion using a multi-criteria decision-making approach based on AHP and to spatialize the results under the scope of coastal vulnerability. In total, seven physical criteria were selected: shoreline change, geomorphology, soil types, proximity to the coast, coastal vegetation, elevation, and slope. The compiled criteria were acquired based on the availability of data and relevance to coastal vulnerability. The areas of high and very high physical vulnerability in the study area cover approximately 5.99 and 0.87 km², respectively, comprising 71% of the total study area. In turn, the results obtained are of utmost importance for supporting mitigation measures against the impacts of coastal erosion by management bodies.
Integrative socio-environmental approach aimed at comprehensive reparation through Community-Based Participatory Research conducted in the rural community of Lagoa dos Cavalos, municipality of Russas, Ceará, Brazil. The theoretical and methodological contributions from a well-established Ecuadorian initiative aimed at integral reparation, known as the Clinica Ambiental, were crucial in addressing the following question: How can processes of shared knowledge creation enhance the community plan for the Lagoa dos Cavalos territory, thereby strengthening its traditions, lifestyles, and health and good living practices? Discussions are initiated for reparations aimed at healing approaches in territories affected by the destructive logic of neo-extractivism. It has been recognized that the epistemological foundations for knowledge production require updates that support the preservation of the right to life. Additionally, the concept of reparation can facilitate community-based participatory experiences in contexts of socio-environmental conflicts.entais.
The village of Jericoacoara, located within the Jericoacoara National Park (PARNA), has been suffering from an overload of tourist visits that compromises environmental preservation, local biodiversity, and carrying capacity. Given this context, this article aims to estimate the tourist carrying capacity of the village of Jericoacoara, in the state of Ceará, in light of the intensification of tourism that has occurred since the 2010s. Methodologically, we adopted the method of measuring physical, real, and effective carrying capacity proposed for natural parks, considering tourist visitation data, total visitation area, total daily opening hours to the public, average length of stay of visitors, and limiting factors, based on conditions in 2019. The results indicate that the current visitation scenario exceeds the actual and effective capacity of the site, even considering a hypothetical scenario of sustainable tourism, with a 20% reduction in tourist flow. Even so, in this scenario, there is a greater approximation between the number of visitors and the estimated sustainable limits. The conclusion was that there is a need for interventions aimed at the sustainable management of the village, through coordination between the government, the local community, and the tourism sector.
This project focused on evaluating the production of biogas from urban solid waste with semi-continuous application of leachate and domestic sewage septic tank effluent. The work lasted 12 months and was carried out at ASMOC with 16 reactors of 1,000 liters each. The base of each reactor was filled with layers of gravel, followed by 0.5m of MSW, prepared according to ASMOC's gravimetry, and a layer of topsoil. The material was compacted manually using a socket in which 10% of the volume was used as a headspace at the top of the reactors. Of these, 4 were irrigated with leachate from the old landfill cell, 4 with concentrated leachate; 4 with cesspit effluent and the other 4 received neither leachate nor cesspit effluent. 20L of leachate and effluent were fed into the corresponding reactors every 15 days. Half of each system was irrigated every two weeks with 30L of water to simulate rainfall. The composition and flow rate of the biogas produced was measured for each reactor, one point at a time, on a daily basis. It was found that rainfall interferes with methane production in landfills. The best performance in methane production was achieved with the introduction of leachate in both the dry and rainy periods. The irrigation of septic tank effluent in the dry season increases methane production in landfills. Finally, under the conditions tested, the recirculation of raw leachate is the best alternative for increasing methane production in landfills, both in the dry and rainy seasons.
