Introduction: The analysis of performance indicators (PI) in soccer has been widely studied in the men’s game, but far less so in women’s soccer, where no studies have compared the performance of specific national teams. In the case of Costa Rica, no prior research has examined the performance of its senior women’s national team. Comparing a lower-ranked team with the world champion team makes it possible to identify performance gaps and guide decision-making for future competitions. Objective: The general objective was to analyze the performance indicators between the World Champion team and the Costa Rican team in the Women’s World Cup. Methodology: This study is an empirical investigation, in which 9 matches played between Spain and Costa Rica were analyzed. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed (t Student, t-Welch, U-Mann Whitney), and the coefficient of variation was calculated. Results: Significant differences were found in the performance indicators (group stage = 11 variables and entire competition = 16 variables) (p<.05). Additionally, Costa Rica compared to Spain showed higher variability in the group stage and throughout the entire competition. Conclusions: In the group stage, Spain presented more attacking actions at high-intensity, while Costa Rica did more defensive actions and at lower intensity. Throughout the World Cup, Costa Rica had more actions in some attacking variables and in defensive actions but accompanied by physical fatigue. Additionally, Spain showed greater consistency in its style of play, whereas Costa Rica presented higher variability. Implications: This information is applicable to the Costa Rican women’s national team; an analysis of their performance in a World Cup can guide the coaching staff in making future decisions.
Introduction: Body composition is a method of analysis that allows differentiation between fat mass, muscle, water and minerals, providing key information about health. Its evaluation is fundamental, as it makes it possible to determine the percentage of fat and muscle, facilitating the identification of possible risks associated with different health conditions. Objective: Analyze the relationship between body composition and levels of physical activity according to occupation in a university community. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with a relational phase was developed, body composition was evaluated by bioimpedance using a tanita digital scale, and the levels of physical activity in teachers, administrative staff and university students were evaluated using the international questionnaire IPAQ short version. The population was the total number of teachers/administrators and undergraduate students. The final sample included 304 participants, the inclusion criteria were to be members of the educational community, enrolled students and hired workers. Statistical tests such as chi-square and wilcoxon were used. Results: The mean age of the students was 20.9 ± 2.5 years and of the administrative and teaching staff the mean was 37.69 ± 10.75 years. Regarding the percentage of body fat, male students had a mean of 17.07 ± 5.57% and female students had a mean of 29.2 ± 6.1%, indicating a slight overweight in men and an evident overweight in women. In administrative and teaching staff, the average body mass index was 25.7 ± 4.1 in men and 25.6 ± 3.9 in women, placing them in the overweight category. Conclusion: There was evidence of a relationship between body composition and levels of physical activity, which highlights the importance of designing strategies to promote healthy habits in the university community.
Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder where physical exercise, such as table tennis, may offer benefits. Objective: This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of an 8-week table tennis training program and explore its effects on functional capacity in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods: Eight participants (six men and two women) with PD underwent physical tests, before and after the intervention, to evaluate limb strength and gait functionality. Feasibility was assessed through recruitment, retention and adherence, and safety. Results: The program demonstrated excellent feasibility, with 100% recruitment, retention, and session adherence, and no adverse events. In addition, the exploratory analysis showed significant improvements in gait ability from 0 to 5 m and from 0 to 10 m, as well as in the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. However, no improvements were observed in gait ability from 5 to 10 m, nor in the counter-movement jump (CMJ) and handgrip strength (HANDG) tests. Conclusion: An 8-week table tennis program is a feasible and safe intervention for individuals with PD. These findings suggest its potential to improve gait and reduce fall risk; however, the results are exploratory and require confirmation in larger, controlled trials.
Introduction. Musculoskeletal diseases (MDs) fit more than 150 disorders, mainly affecting the locomotor system. These types of disorders can be caused by fractures, sprains, or strains, as a summary they affect the quality of life by modifying lifestyle behavior. Through physical activity (PA) and exercise is possible to reduce the level of pain and improve the quality of life. Aim. This study aimed to carry out a trend analysis related to the documents that are focused on the study of MDs and PA. Study Design. The present document fits within the “Ex-post facto retrospective” studies Methods. A bibliometric analysis was carried out using the keywords “Musculoskeletal diseases” and “Physical activity” considering the paper published between 1995 and 2022, identifying a total of 147 documents using the Web of Science Core Collection. Results. The results reported an exponential growth of 79% from 2004 till 2022. According to the authors, the journal and countries were “Estevez-López, F." and "Gossec, L.", “International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health”, and Germany and England the most productive, respectively. Regarding the keywords, a great diversity was observed, in which "Musculoskeletal diseases" and "Physical activity" presented the highest occurrence with 52 and 29 times, respectively. Conclusions. To reduce the consequences of MDs, it is recommended to develop PA program, to reduce the pain, and improve the quality of life and mental health of the individuals.
