"This paper analyses available demographic data on international migration within and to Europe during the period 1918-1939 and 1945-1993. The main focus is on the east-west dimension of this migration. In the inter-war period some 9.2 million people either left their countries as labour migrants or were displaced.... In the post-war period (1945-1950) some 15.4 million people fled or were displaced within Europe.... Between 1950 and 1992 another 14 million people migrated from a country in East-central and Eastern Europe to the West.... In recent times the wars in Croatia and Bosnia as well as ethnic cleansing have led to the largest wave of refugees and displaced persons since 1945.... Our paper concludes that push and pull factors causing massive migration cannot only be contained by erecting new legislative barriers and deploying more armed border guards against newcomers."
"The paper [analyzes] available demographic data on international migration within and to Europe during the periods 1918-39 and 1945-92. The main focus is on the East-West dimension of this migration. In the inter-war period some 9.2 million people either left their countries as labour migrants or were displaced.... In the post-war period (1945-50) some 15.4 million people fled or were displaced within Europe. Most of them moved or were forced to move westwards.... In recent times the wars in Croatia and Bosnia as well as ethnic cleansing have led to the largest wave of refugees and displaced persons since 1945.... The paper argues that push and pull factors causing massive migration cannot...be contained by erecting new legislative barriers and deploying more armed guards against newcomers." (EXCERPT)
"This paper presents an overview of the distribution, number and position of Jewish communities in the world, in the light of historical and political conditions which formerly [influenced], and even today continue to influence Jewish migration. The Jewish community in Croatia and Zagreb is analysed. Nevertheless, attention is focused primarily on East Europe and Israel as areas of large changes." (EXCERPT)

The author examines migration during the Turkish advance, the migrationary and demographic picture of West Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian period, and during the first and second Yugoslavia. She likewise treats the connection between external migration and the ethnic situation in West Herzegovina. Finally, she discusses return migration and problems of families in the migration context, and the interrelationship between migration and development." (EXCERPT)
"The paper analyses the quantitative aspect of emigration [from Croatia] to European and overseas countries in the period from the middle of the 19th century till 1981 (the time of the last census). Analysing various sources and studies, the author presents data on emigration form individual Croatian lands (Istria, civil Croatia, Dalmatia) in relation to individual emigration flows (to Europe, overseas) and periods (before World War I, the inter-war period, the post-war period), and at the same time he examines external migration as an effect of the two world wars." The author analyzes changes in the rate of migration and choice of destination among migrants from socialist countries in eastern and southern Europe to the United States and Canada during the period 1941-1990. "The data presented show that in the period in question the immigrants from the European socialist countries constituted only 2.9% of the total number of immigrants to the U.S.A. while their proportion in the total number of immigrants to Canada was 6.6%.... In comparison with the decades 1961-70 and 1971-80, in the middle of the 80's the proportion of immigrants from the examined countries in the U.S.A. and Canada increased.... The proportion of Poles among the emigrants from the East European countries in the U.S.A. and Canada is comparatively the highest...." (SUMMARY IN SCR)
The author examines social and demographic characteristics of Ukrainians living in Canada, with a focus on acculturation levels and trends. "Among the indices which confirm the notion that members of the group have integrated themselves into the social-demographic structure of Canadian society, the author notices: dispersive settlement (in all the provinces and territories of the country), urbanisation which recently has surpassed the Canadian average; an increase in the number of persons born in Canada (87.5%); a growing similarity between the employment structure of the able-bodied population and the employment structure typical for Canada as a whole; growth of the incomes of Ukrainian families;...[and] increases in the level of education...." "The main aim of the present paper was to establish the dimensions of international labour migration in the Arab world in the last ten to fifteen years, to describe the major characteristics of a particular process of movement of labour in the area and to point to the factors that have [affected] the politics of the countries of employment. A further aim was to show the specific features of labour force presence of a particular country of origin (Arab and Asian) and to give the socio-economic characteristics of the different migrant groups employed in the countries of the Middle East." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
The author examines and compares the relationship between migration and age distribution in Yugoslavia using data for the populations of Kosovo and Vojvodina. "It is shown that in both cases migration had the same direction of effect (rejuvenation of the total population), but that the importance of the migration component in changing the age structure was less in Vojvodina than in Kosovo.... An examination is made of the influence of migration on changes in the age structure by way of an effect on fertility...." Data concern the period 1968-1981. (SUMMARY IN ENG)
The authors review migration trends from Yugoslavia to France since the 1920s using official data from both countries. Special consideration is given to economic factors; changes in migration policies are also reviewed. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND FRE)
"The present migration situation is analysed in regard to the labour market, the legal status of migrants, return flows and reintegration, and the position of second generation migrants.... In the second part of the paper the author attempts to discern the future of migration in Europe on the basis of existing demographic trends in Europe and the world, present trends [in] the labour market, and current technological changes. In this context he offers an outline for the Yugoslav migration perspective." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
