Autism spectrum disorder and bipolar affective disorder exhibit partial symptomatic overlap, which can complicate accurate diagnosis and delay the implementation of appropriate treatment. Increasing research also points to the potential comorbidity of both conditions, further complicating the clinical picture, diagnostics, and therapy planning. The aim of this narrative review is to examine the literature concerning the relationship between autism spectrum disorder and bipolar affective disorder, with particular emphasis on the hypothesis that autistic traits and their associated chronic functional impairments may heighten susceptibility to the development or more severe course of bipolar affective disorder. Epidemiological data, diagnostic challenges, selected neurobiological and genetic mechanisms, as well as practical implications for diagnosis, treatment, and environmental support are discussed. A review of the literature highlights the need for cautious differential diagnosis, longitudinal observation, and interdisciplinary collaboration in the care of individuals with comorbid autism spectrum disorder and bipolar affective disorder. A better understanding of the relationship between these conditions may facilitate earlier recognition of affective symptoms in individuals on the autism spectrum and support more appropriate clinical assessment and management planning.
Objectives The aim of this study was to examine the psychosexual functioning of transgender individuals in Poland, with particular attention to their sexual experiences, partner relationships, and sexual satisfaction in the context of the transition process. Methods The study involved 104 transgender individuals at various stages of transition. Data were collected using a proprietary questionnaire and the Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire (SSQ). Results The results indicate a relationship between the stage of transition and the level of sexual activity, satisfaction with sexual life, and openness in intimate relationships. Individuals at later stages of transition more frequently reported positive sexual experiences, higher levels of body acceptance, and fewer concerns related to physical intimacy. No significant associations were observed between sociodemographic variables and the level of sexual satisfaction. Conclusions The findings indicate an association between the stage of the diagnostic and therapeutic process and selected aspects of sexual functioning among transgender individuals. The obtained results highlight the importance of incorporating psychosexual care into a comprehensive approach to the health of this group and point to the need for further research on transgender sexuality.
Zaburzenia hazardowe (GD) mają podobne mechanizmy biologiczne i objawy do zaburzeń związanych z używaniem substancji (SUD). Podobnie u osób uzależnionych od hazardu i amfetaminy z wyższym poziomem skali cechy STAI i wyższym poziomem Neurotyczności, polimorfizm genu DRD4 Ex3 s/l występował istotnie częściej w porównaniu do grupy kontrolnej z polimorfizmem s/s.
Objectives The aim of the study was to investigate whether three negative symptoms of schizophrenia – motor retardation, emotional withdrawal, and blunted affect – differ in their course over 20 years following first hospitalization. Methods Data from 80 patients in the Cracow Prospective Study of Schizophrenia, assessed at six time points over 20 years using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, were reanalyzed with Bayesian cumulative ordinal multilevel models following the WAMBS (When to Worry and How to Avoid the Misuse of Bayesian Statistics) checklist. Results All three symptoms displayed U-shaped trajectories characterized by early improvement and late-phase deterioration. Motor retardation was less severe at baseline than emotional withdrawal (β = −0.85; 95% CrI [−1.31; −0.39]) and blunted affect (β = −0.99; 95% CrI [−1.47; −0.52]). A preliminary indication, not reaching conventional evidential thresholds, was that motor retardation may be more persistent than emotional withdrawal (β = 0.25; 95% CrI [0.04; 0.45]). No differences were found in trajectory shape. Conclusions Negative symptoms show similar long-term U-shaped trajectories. The lower baseline severity but potentially higher persistence of motor retardation raises the possibility that motor symptoms, once present, may follow a more trait-like course, though this preliminary pattern requires replication. These results highlight the need for continuous monitoring of negative symptoms throughout the illness.
