1Cultural Expression and Semiotic Adaptation: Tarasti’s Framework in the Study of Modern Music
    Triyono Bramantyo

his article applies Eero Tarasti’s semiotic framework to analyze the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic dimensions of contemporary music, demonstrating its relevance in understanding the multifaceted meanings embedded in modern compositions. Grounded in the theories of Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce, and further developed by Tarasti, this study employs a qualitative methodology that integrates theoretical analysis, case studies, and interdisciplinary perspectives. By examining works such as Max Richter’s Sleep (2015), Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace (2000), and John Luther Adams’ Become Ocean (2013), the research highlights how music functions as a dynamic system of signs within evolving technological, cultural, and global contexts. This study explores how contemporary music reflects complex meanings shaped by globalization, technology, and interdisciplinary practices. Using Eero Tarasti’s semiotic framework, it applies a qualitative approach combining theoretical analysis with case studies. Focusing on the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic dimensions, the research examines works like Become Ocean by John Luther Adams and DAMN. by Kendrick Lamar. The findings show how these compositions interact with cultural and technological contexts, revealing the evolving semiotic roles of music in the 21st century. The analysis reveals that syntactic innovations—including minimalist repetition, hybrid instrumentation, and algorithmic processes—challenge traditional musical frameworks, creating new structural paradigms. Semantic exploration uncovers how composers embed cultural hybridity, symbolic narratives, and emotional depth within their works. Pragmatic analysis demonstrates the transformative role of digital platforms, participatory cultures, and globalized performances in shaping audience engagement and interpretation. By situating contemporary music within interdisciplinary intersections of technology, media, and cultural studies, this research underscores the enduring relevance of semiotics in decoding how compositions reflect and influence societal, technological, and cultural transformations. The study concludes that semiotic analysis enhances our understanding of music’s communicative power, affirming its critical role as a medium for cultural dialogue, technological innovation, and social commentary.

2Kazakh Opera in the Dialogue of Traditions: Transformation of National Heritage in the World Academic Vocal Art
    Almat Izbambetov, Toizhan Eginbaeva

Kazakh opera is an original phenomenon in the history of musical art, which arose as a result of the dynamic interaction of the national musical heritage of Kazakhstan with Russian and Western European opera traditions. Starting from the earliest works such as Kyz Zhibek by E. Brusilovsky, Abai by A. Zhubanov and L. Khamidi and Birzhan-Sara by M. Tulebaev, Kazakh composers sought to integrate folklore elements into the academic opera form. This synthesis included not only direct quoting of folk songs, but also a reinterpretation of the Kazakh intonation system within the framework of opera dramaturgy. The influence of Russian opera, especially with regard to the use of folklore material as a dramatic basis, and the borrowing of Western European forms, including the bel canto vocal technique, played a decisive role in shaping the national style. A distinctive feature of this process is the introduction of symphonic thinking into Kazakh opera. Drawing inspiration from Russian composers who expanded the scale and depth of the opera through symphonic development, Kazakh composers combined this structural approach with national melodic and rhythmic features. This combination has made Kazakh opera more accessible to both local, Russian and international audiences. The expressive potential of this genre has been further expanded due to the psychological depth of the arias, where the music goes beyond simple accompaniment and becomes an independent dramatic element. The bel canto technique, adapted to the phonetic, harmonic and declamatory features of the Kazakh language, contributed to the emergence of a national opera style combining European technical skill with the plasticity and emotional richness of the Kazakh melody. In the context of globalization, Kazakh opera serves as an example of cultural hybridity, where traditions are not eroded, but are revived in dialogue with world artistic practices. Modern productions demonstrate the genre’s continued ability to preserve its cultural identity while simultaneously seeking renewal and international recognition, ensuring its relevance in the cultural arena of the 21st century.

3Piano Music and Cultural Identity in Kosovo: from Pedagogical Tradition to Artistic Diplomacy
    Syzana Jakupi

The development of piano music in Kosovo represents both a cultural synthesis and a process of artistic self-definition under complex historical circumstances. This study examines how Kosovo’s pianistic culture emerged as a bridge between national identity and universal artistic values, functioning simultaneously as an educational foundation and a form of cultural diplomacy. Employing a qualitative and historical approach, the research combines document analysis, interviews with ten pianists and composers, and detailed examination of two representative works—Rauf Dhomi’s Kur pranvera vonohet...! and Vinçenc Gjini’s Valle Kosovare. The selection of these works reflects their symbolic use of Albanian folk modes and rhythmic asymmetries to articulate hybrid musical identities that merge national and cosmopolitan traditions. The interviews, analysed thematically, revealed recurring patterns of resilience, creativity, and identity preservation within Kosovo’s musical education and performance environments. Participants emphasised the piano’s dual role as both a pedagogical instrument and a medium for expressing cultural belonging, despite the historical scarcity of resources and institutional constraints. Findings demonstrate how composers and performers together transformed the piano into a channel of national affirmation and international representation, merging European compositional forms with Albanian folk idioms. Through hybridity, pedagogy, and cultural diplomacy, Kosovo’s piano music exemplifies the dynamics of small- nation resilience and adaptation within a post-socialist context. Ultimately, the study highlights how musical creation and interpretation function as complementary acts of cultural memory and innovation, revealing the piano’s enduring contribution to shaping Kosovo’s modern artistic identity, strengthening educational practice, and sustaining its dialogue with the global musicological community.

4The Little Sparrow Affect: Sezen Aksu’s Memorial Time-Space and Anarcho-Feminism in Turkish Popular Music
    Poyraz Kolluoğlu

This article employs affect as a conceptual category to address the question of why Turkey’s pop music icon Sezen Aksu—also known as the Little Sparrow—resonates across a wide audience, including non- local or irrelevant listeners who do not understand the vernacular language. In music studies, affect can be theoretically contextualized and methodologically studied in myriad ways. In the case focused here, I argue that what I define as the Little Sparrow affect manifests itself through three interrelated dimensions: a bodily representation that distorts the time–space configurations of personal and societal memory; a paradoxical political stance blending anarcho-feminism with moralism; and a raspy vocal texture that penetrates the subconscious through paralinguistic timbres. Methodologically, this argument draws on Theodor Adorno’s notion of “negative dialectics” understood here as a heuristic mode of investigation primarily employed within critical theory and cultural studies-oriented approaches. To render such an analysis tangible, I first draw attention to Aksu’s timeless contradictory feminist public persona, intertwined with a bygone Mediterranean spatio-temporality—a theme that frequently reoccurs in her song lyrics, interviews, music videos, and overall album concepts, as will be demonstrated below. Secondly, by drawing attention to the anarcho-humanist themed existential inquiries that particularly stand out in her recent lyrics, I will demonstrate how the feminist representation again transcending both time and space generates affect. Lastly, I examine her vocal technique and characteristics as a physiologically changing bodily component, arguing that it penetrates the subconscious through the paralinguistic qualifiers authentically produced thanks to her raspy nature of voice.

5Historical Performance Practice and Pedagogical Adaptation for Classical Guitar: Ornamentation and Fingering in Sylvius Leopold Weiss’s Passacaglia in D Major
    Jiaqi Wu, Yew Yoong Chong

The under representation of Sylvius Leopold Weiss’s (1687-1750) compositions in classical guitar pedagogy, despite their exceptional musical quality and technical sophistication, presents a significant gap in baroque performance education. This study addresses the pedagogical potential of Weiss’s D major passacaglia from suite no. 13, examining its structural complexity and interpretive possibilities for modern classical guitar instruction. The research aims to demonstrate how this historically significant work can enhance baroque performance pedagogy while providing practical solutions for technical and interpretive challenges. The methodology employs qualitative music analysis combined with practical performance validation. The analytical framework examines harmonic progressions, melodic development, and rhythmic characteristics, particularly focusing on hemiola patterns and their pedagogical implications. Fingering strategies were developed through comparative analysis of existing editions, with particular attention to the Edson Lopes (2012) transcription. Ornamentation practices were investigated based on eighteenth-century performance traditions and adapted for modern guitar technique. Key findings reveal that the passacaglia’s fixed bass structure provides an ideal framework for teaching voice-leading concepts, while its variation form offers progressive technical challenges suitable for intermediate to advanced students. The study identifies specific pedagogical benefits including the development of polyphonic awareness, baroque ornamentation skills, and historical performance practice understanding. Practical fingering solutions address common technical obstacles while maintaining musical integrity and stylistic authenticity. The research demonstrates that Weiss’s repertoire offers valuable alternatives to the commonly used Bach transcriptions, providing music originally conceived for plucked strings. These findings support curriculum diversification in classical guitar education and contribute to the preservation of baroque lute traditions. The study recommends integrating such works into structured pedagogical programs, offering educators evidence-based approaches to expanding student repertoire while maintaining rigorous musical and technical standards.
