Is the digital economy a “bonus” or a “ minus” for cities to save energy and reduce emissions? This paper empirically tests the impact mechanism of the digital economy on urban energy saving and emission reduction from the perspective of technological progress and structural transformation using a panel data of 243 cities in China from 2011-2019. It is found that the digital economy is a “double-edged sword” for energy saving and emission reduction significantly increasing the scale of urban power consumption and CO 2 emissions but reduces the intensity of power consumption and CO 2 emissions. The mechanism test results show that the energy rebound effect of green technology innovation exceeds the energy-saving effect of green technology efficiency improvement. Therefore, the digital economy increases urban power consumption and CO 2 emissions by promoting green technology progress. The digital economy increases urban power consumption by promoting the transformation of industrial structure, but significantly reduces the intensity of CO 2 emissions. In detail, the structural transformation of the manufacturing industry has the effect of emission reduction, while energy saving and emission reduction effects of both agriculture and service industry are not significant due to the low-end industrial structure. In addition, a good environment of government green digital governance can strengthen the energy saving and emission reduction effects of the digital economy. The research conclusions can provide enlightenment for the digital transformation of urban economy and the formulation of energy saving and emission reduction strategies under the “dual carbon” goal.
Cities play a key role in the national scientific development and technological innovation, and we must firmly promote scientific and technological innovation around the development direction determined by the country. In order to build Chinese path to modernization and promote urbanization, innovation in basic theory, basic technology(including underlying technology) and applied technology must be put in the first place to promote the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. It has been the unremitting pursuit of the Chinese people since modern times to help the national rejuvenation with science and technology. Building a modern country is the great awakening of the Chinese nation. We must absorb all the outstanding achievements of human civilization to promote Chinese path to modernization. In the process of urbanization, we should promote organized market-oriented applied basic research to meet the coming intelligent society, create a good ecosystem for organized market-oriented applied basic technology, and pay attention to and grasp the internal logic of the upcoming fourth industrial revolution.
Based on the questionnaire data of Qingcheng Station in Hohhot, this paper uses single-factor analysis of variance, structural equation modeling and modified IPA methods to explore and analyze the public satisfaction with urban toilets, empirically testing the effect of urban toilet revolution. The results show that the average of the public overall satisfaction with Qingcheng Station under the Likert Scale is 3.77, which is above the average level. Differences in individual characteristics significantly affect satisfaction with urban toilet renovation. Functional facilities, planning and layout, management work, and detailed design have a positive impact on overall satisfaction. The impact of architectural landscape on overall satisfaction is not significant. In the future, it is necessary to improve some aspects including humanized design and service, facility management and maintenance, civilized publicity.
High-quality development in the Yellow River Basin is predicated primarily on the development of urban agglomerations. This paper follows the fundamental characteristics of the spatial attributes of urban agglomerations, constructs the index system of urban agglomerations’ high-quality development based on the logic of element-structure-conditions-function, takes eight urban agglomerations, including the urban agglomerations of the Yellow River Basin and other urban agglomerations as case studies and measures the level of urban agglomerations’ high-quality development based on the regional comparison. The absence of high-level urban agglomerations highlights the variable development of urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin, according to the study. By measuring and identifying the industrial division of labor and spatial stratification of each city cluster and empirically examining their effects on high-quality urban development, we find that the dual constraints of the industrial division of labor and spatial stratification are the primary reasons for the lack of high-quality urban clusters in the Yellow River basin. Based on the theoretical analysis, we propose a viable strategy for the high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin to construct a high-level urban agglomeration by overcoming the dual constraints of industry and space.
By using questionnaire data and POI data, this paper analyzes the difference between residents’ demand and supply of public service functional facilities in Shanghai, and calculates the matching efficiency of supply and demand of functional facilities in each street and district of Shanghai. The results found that there are significant differences in the demand preferences of residents with different characteristics for public service functional facilities. The supply mismatch of public service functional facilities in Shanghai is widespread, showing the phenomenon of excess and insufficient supply of service resources. According to the mismatch of resources, streets and districts in Shanghai can be divided into 15 types of public service facilities. The paper puts forward strategies for governance from three aspects which are supply layout, supply information and supply subject. And provides reference frame for the renewal of community life circle and the improvement of the supply efficiency of functional facilities space.
Based on panel data of municipal infrastructure in county towns from 2016 to 2020, this study employs the cumulative distribution curve and Dagum Gini coefficient to assess the distribution dynamics and regional disparities of municipal infrastructure. The study also evaluates the spatial correlation and clustering patterns, and uses the coefficient of variation to analyze their σ convergence. Additionally, the study establishes a dynamic spatial panel data model to test for β convergence. The results indicate that from 2016 to 2020, the level of municipal infrastructure in county towns has significantly improved. The level of infrastructure exhibits a declining pattern, with higher levels in the eastern region and lower levels in the western region. The disparity of municipal infrastructure is generally small, with intra-regional disparity contributing more to the overall disparity and increasing over time. Hypervariable density is the primary source of overall disparity. The study also finds evidence of σ convergence, absolute β convergence, and conditional β convergence in all types of municipal infrastructure at the national level and the comprehensive scores across the eastern, central, and western regions. The convergence rate is fastest in the central region and slowest in the western region, and spatial factors have a positive impact on convergence. Based on these findings, the study recommends increased investment in low-level municipal infrastructure in county towns, improved regional coordination policies, exerted spatial spillover effects, made precise policies for different regions and types of infrastructure, optimized the investment system.
In recent years, urban network relationships based on factor linkages have received widespread attention from economic geographers. Based on the information database of industrial and commercial enterprises, this paper constructs a directional weighted network of investment in four major urban agglomerations in China-Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Chengdu-Chongqing-and describes the spatial structure and evolutionary characteristics The main conclusions of the study are as follows: During the evolution process from 2010 to 2019, the scale and density of the investment networks of the four major urban agglomerations show a certain growth trend. From the perspective of spatial pattern, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei shows a Shijiazhuang-Beijing-Tianjin From the perspective of spatial pattern, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei shows the inverted “V”-shaped structure of Shijiazhuang-Beijing-Tianjin, the Yangtze River Delta city cluster shows a multi-axis development with Shanghai as the core, the rhombus structure of Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Zhuhai-Foshan in the Pearl River Delta city cluster has been stabilized, and the Chengdu-Chongqing city cluster shows the spatial pattern of Chengdu and Chongqing with a double core and Chengdu with a single core. In terms of city level, the investment network pattern of the four major city clusters has a clear “core-edge” structure, but there is significant heterogeneity in the level differences of city nodes.
City is an important carrier of modernization construction. Promoting the modernization of megacity governance is the main content of the modernization of urban governance system and governance capacity, and also the internal requirement of promoting Chinese path to modernization. Megacities have the characteristics of complexity, diversity, fuzziness and vulnerability, and face many governance problems such as governance scale load, fragmentation of management system, fuzzy positioning of urban functions, and insufficient supply of public services. Continuously promoting the modernization of urban governance in mega cities must adhere to the overall planning of the Party and the state and strive to explore new ways of modern governance in mega cities. From the perspective of good governance, examine the problems in urban governance, deeply explore the development characteristics and laws of mega cities, improve the system and mechanism of urban governance, and enhance the scientific, refined, and democratic level of urban governance.
This paper uses the data from the China Household Tracking Survey(CFPS) from 2014, 2016 and 2018 to explore the impact of new urbanization on micro-common prosperity of Chinese households. It is found that new-type urbanization effectively promotes common prosperity and has the most significant impact on the dimension of material affluence. From the perspective of the mechanism, new-type urbanization mainly affects common prosperity by promoting the development of digital inclusive finance, economic growth, consumption level and entrepreneurial activity. The heterogeneity analysis showed that the new urbanization had a promoting effect on the common prosperity of the eastern and western regions, but the effect on the central region was not significant. There is a “Matthew Effect” in new-type urbanization, which has a stronger effect on households with higher levels of common prosperity. This paper provides new ideas and policy directions for promoting common prosperity.
The development of the financial industry is affected by external economies of scale and has distinct agglomeration characteristics, which also leads to the differentiation of financial center cities and non-financial center cities. Within a certain range of time and space, the financial resources will gather in the financial center cities. This aggregation process will bring different benefits to the agglomeration centers and peripheral cities. Variety. Based on the free capital model, this paper simulates the evolution of the geographical distribution of the financial industry and its welfare consequences by introducing external economies of scale. The model deduction proves that: as the trade cost decreases, the financial industry will agglomerate to the central area; at the same time, the welfare of the central area will become better with the agglomeration, while the welfare of the peripheral area will be jointly determined by the size of economies of scale and the level of trade costs. Then, based on the data of 272 Chinese cities from 2005 to 2018, this paper verified the existence of slight economies of scale in the urban financial sector by threshold regression, and verified the welfare improvements for both the center and the periphery of financial agglomeration of China’s financial center cities in the case of only considering distance friction. However, if the institutional cost is taken into consideration, the current institutional cost significantly hinders the spillover effect of the financial center. With the advancement of the construction of a unified national market and the optimization of the business environment in various places, the reduction of institutional costs is conducive to better exerting the potential Pareto improvement effect of financial center city construction.
Most of the existing research is based on the paradigm of industrial civilization, which has not yet reflected the people-centered thought and the requirements of ecological civilization. The results show that: Local quality has become an important factor affecting the individual location of urban talents; The local quality and wage income synergistically affect the location of urban talents, and the local quality affects the location of urban talents by the intermediary mechanism of wage income. The mediating effect of wage income in the eastern region is greater than that in the central and western regions, and the mediating effect in small and medium-sized cities is greater than that in large cities; Local quality and wage income have nonlinear coupling effect on talent location, when local quality crosses a certain threshold value, the positive impact of wage income on talent location will increase to a certain extent. Finally, policy implications are proposed based on the research conclusions and practical needs.
Enhancing the sense of security of migrant workers is a key aspect of accelerating the citizenization of migrant workers in the context of new urbanization. Social inclusion is divided into three dimensions: institutional inclusion, behavioral inclusion, and value inclusion. Based on the comprehensive survey data of China’s social situation in 2021,this paper uses Ologit regression to analyze the impact of social inclusion on migrant workers’ sense of security. The results show that institutional inclusion, behavioral inclusion, value inclusion, gender, and age have significant positive impacts on migrant workers’ sense of security, while housing and income status have significant negative impacts on migrant workers’ sense of security. In the heterogeneity analysis, institutional inclusion has a greater impact on the sense of security of migrant workers who have attended university, owned party membership, and owned housing, behavioral inclusion can more affect the sense of security of migrant workers who are not party members, and value inclusion has a greater impact on the sense of security of migrant workers who have attended university, and owned party membership. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the multi-level social security system, improve the early warning mechanism for discrimination against migrant workers as citizens, and promote the equalization of basic public services in cities and towns, so as to continuously improve the level of migrant workers’ sense of security.
This study examines the impact of afforestation on per capita GDP, per capita disposable income of rural residents, PM 2.5 concentration, and sulfur dioxide emission intensity using panel data at the county level in the Beijing-Tianjin region from 2000 to 2018. The analysis is conducted within the policy framework of the Beijing-Tianjin Sandstorm Source Control Project, utilizing fixed effects and difference-in-differences models. The findings reveal that afforestation in the Beijing-Tianjin region significantly enhances per capita GDP and per capita disposable income of rural residents, while reducing PM 2.5 concentration and sulfur dioxide emission intensity, indicating the feasibility of achieving economic development and environmental protection simultaneously. The robustness tests, which employ the Beijing-Tianjin Sandstorm Source Control Project as a quasi-natural experiment, affirm this conclusion. Strong environmental policy measures can improve regional economy and environmental quality in the short term, but the long-term sustainability of their effects requires reinforcement. Moreover, the impact of strong environmental policy measures on per capita disposable income of rural residents exhibits an evident time lag.
Based on the research perspective of population agglomeration, using the panel data of 113 resource-based cities from 2006 to 2020, this paper empirically analyzes the influence effect and mechanism of quality of place on industrial structure transformation in resource-based cities, and comprehensively investigates its heterogeneous effect by combining urban attributes such as geographical location, development stage and development type with quality attributes such as life, safety, society, humanities and creativity. The results show that, compared with natural quality of place, the improvement of artificial quality of place has a stronger effect on the industrial structure transformation of resource-based cities. Great social quality and creative quality are important factors to promote the industrial structure transformation of resource-based cities. In terms of urban types, the artificial quality of place has a significant positive impact on the rationalization of industrial structure of resource-based cities in the east and south, and has a stronger effect on the advanced industrial structure of mature and renewable resource-based cities, and has a significant promotion effect on the rationalization of industrial structure of coal, forest industry and comprehensive cities. In terms of mechanism, the influence of artificial quality of place on the industrial structure transformation of resource-based cities is mainly conducted through two paths: talent concentration effect and productivity growth effect, and the local market amplification effect has not yet appeared.
Both digital economy and agglomeration economy are included in the theoretical analysis framework of urban economic green transformation. On this basis, the panel data of 284 cities in China from 2011 to 2019 are used to empirically test the impact of digital economy on urban economic green transformation. The research shows that digital economy can promote the green transformation of Chinese urban economy, and the above conclusion is still valid after dealing with endogenous problems and a series of robustness tests. Digital economy has a more significant promoting effect on the decomposition variable of urban green total factor productivity, urban green technology efficiency. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the digital economy plays a more significant role in promoting the green transformation of urban economy in the samples of non-resource-based cities, renewable resource-based cities and cities with high-speed rail service. The mechanism analysis shows that digital economy can promote the green transformation of urban economy by improving the degree of urban economic agglomeration, talent agglomeration and industrial agglomeration. Further analysis shows that the pressure of economic growth target weakens the promoting effect of digital economy on the green transformation of urban economy.
Based on China provincial panel data from 2011 to 2019, this paper empirically analyzes the direct impact and indirect impact path of online public opinion on carbon emissions by using spatial econometric model and chained multiple intermediary model. The results show that there is a significant positive spatial spillover effect of carbon emission intensity in China. From the direct effect, online public opinion can significantly reduce carbon emission intensity; From the indirect effect, environmental regulation and green technology innovation in the network public opinion on carbon played a chain multiple intermediary effect, the influence of network public opinion can be verified by the environmental regulation, green technology innovation, and environmental regulation to promote green technology innovation three path significantly reduce carbon emissions intensity, among them, the Midwest network public opinion influence three path that carbon emissions were significantly, In the eastern region, carbon emission intensity is mainly reduced through two independent mediating effects: environmental regulation and green technology innovation. Therefore, the government should strengthen the importance and reasonable guidance of online public opinion, strengthen the coordination among government, enterprises and the public and the linkage among different regions, so as to effectively play the carbon emission reduction effect of online public opinion and promote the realization of the goal of carbon emission peak and carbon eutrality.
This paper examines the chain and linkage mechanism of the municipal social contradiction resolution system based on the continuous field research of the core city C of J Province, 17 counties(districts) and more than 100 streets and communities. Research has found that the vertical contradiction resolution system with the party and government hierarchy as the central axis, the horizontal connection network for diversified resolution of conflicts and disputes, and the extended structure of technology governance embedded in contradictory governance have surpassed the traditional model of social contradiction resolution. At present, the municipal social contradiction governance mechanism is still at the initial stage of construction. In accordance with the holistic governance paradigm, giving full play to the municipal coordination and link function, creating complementary “policy group”,constructing the technical governance form of “overall wise governance”,will help the city to achieve new breakthroughs in the governance of social contradictions.

Introducing the theory of social interaction into the analysis of the spatial characteristics of urban land supply structure mismatch, the econometric model is used to analyze the existence, specific form and formation mechanism of the spatial interaction of urban land supply structure mismatch. The research shows that: Firstly, the mismatch of overall land supply structure in Chinese cities and the mismatch of land supply in different industries all have spatial interaction behavior, which is specifically presented as an interactive form of competition for the top, and this spatial interaction has obvious provincial boundary effects. With the improvement of urban land marketization, market potential and network connection strength, the degree of spatial interaction between the mismatch of overall urban land supply structure and the mismatch of land supply in different industries will decrease. Secondly, investment competition, taxation competition, floor area ratio regulation, and environmental regulation enforcement intensity competition have all played a role in promoting the spatial interaction of the overall urban land supply structure mismatch. The mechanism of land supply mismatch in different industries is also different, and this effect of the mechanism also has an obvious provincial boundary effect. Due to differences in urban land marketization, market potential, and network connection, the impact of the spatial interaction of the land supply mismatch in the overall and different industries also exist significant differences.
