More on Edward Hall’s and John Dewey’s Contributions to the Theory and Practice of Intercultural Communication As a Discipline

Abstract As an extension (Part II) of a previous article written and published in 2016 (Part I) by the author, four more areas of the ideas of John Dewey and Edward Hall will be discussed with the intention of deepening and fine-tuning the theory and practice of intercultural communication as a discipline. These four areas are the following: 1) more on the relationship between definitions and inquiry; (2) further discussion on Dewey’s and Hall’s views on patterns, habits and rules; (3) more support for Hall’s emphasis on nonverbal communication from mother/infant research; and (4) Dewey’s and Bentley’s distinction between interaction and transaction and how this can further help us to understand Hall’s mystifying definition/equation: Culture is communication.
