A spool has a bifilar superconducting winding wrapped around the spool. A cooling unit cools the spool to approximately cryogenic temperatures. A holder secures the spool and cooling unit.
An electromagnetic field generator is provided, also a temp. sensor with an electric current measuring instrument and a quench determination detector for determining when the winding quenches. The spool is further comprised of an S-cut groove in which a portion of the winding is located.
