We decompose population growth in 19th century Liaoning in northeast China into the shares accounted for by different socioeconomic groups, and by time periods with different economic conditions as reflected in grain prices. This decomposition reveals who benefitted the most when social and economic conditions supported population increase. Previous studies of one region for which relevant data are available, northeast China, showed that birth and death rates varied according to community, household, and individual context, but did not investigate differences in growth rates by context, or the shares of population growth accounted for by each group. Using the same dataset, we decompose population growth by synthesizing differentials in mortality and fertility into estimates of implied growth rates of population subgroups and the shares of total population growth they account for. This decomposition framework can be applied in any setting where household registers or other sources allow for the measurement of the mortality and fertility rates of population subgroups at fixed points of time. We show that advantaged socioeconomic groups contributed disproportionately to population growth in northeast China, and that more growth took place when harvests were good, that is when grain prices were low. Even though mortality and fertility responses to grain price fluctuations varied across subgroups, there is no evidence of differential response of growth rates to these fluctuations. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings for our understanding of population dynamics in the late Qing.
In process mining, computational processing of sequential data allows the discovery and analysis of processes followed by organisations. These can be either explicitly understood processes, captured in documents or rules, or implicit process paths known in more informal or emergent ways. This paper examines a long-lived institution of historical interest, the Qing (1644-1911) Chinese civil service, using data assembled by historians on civil officials during the 19th century. Mapping the promotion process by following paths of officials through civil service postings helps illuminate the everyday operation of the institution and the society around it. Two distinctive features of this data set are that it records states, not events, and careers often include holding multiple concurrent roles. The combination is a poor match for existing process discovery techniques. We describe this structure as a state snapshot log, and present a new discovery technique, the State Snapshot miner, for constructing stochastic Petri net models from such logs. A case study shows its use in analysing promotion paths for elite graduates in the Qing civil service.

This monograph chapter includes a study of mortality among 12000 Chinese Han peasants during 1774-1873. The mortality history is constructed from 25 population registers available from the Liaoning Provincial Archives and the California Institute of Technology. Data were adjusted before constructing summary life tables for 16 intercensal periods during 1792 and 1867 for males and females. The peasants all came from four villages in Shenyang county surrounding the provincial capital in present-day Liaoning province. The banner registers were used for military and civilian administration during the Qing dynasty and thus were very reliable but not perfect. Records were linked manipulated and grouped in 5-year periods in this analysis. The data were based on the most consistently reported age. Findings indicate that mortality was moderate. Life expectancy at 6 months was 35 years for men and over 28 years for women. It is estimated that life expectancy at birth was around the high 20s for women and the low 30s for men. Life expectancy at the turn of the 19th century was similar to life expectancy in France at the same time. But Chinese men lived longer than Chinese women and the patterns of mortality differed from the West Model Life Tables. Mortality was lower for both sexes during the 20s and 50s than either before that age or after that age. Women did not begin to live longer than men until around age 30. Male mortality compared to the Model West populations was higher than female mortality up to age 40. For Chinese women mortality levels shifted upwards from the West level one to the West level six and then declined to below one. There were two low and two high mortality periods. Male life expectancy differed significantly by 15 years while for females the 10-year discrepancy was insignificant.
We study the organizational demography of the Qing civil service from 1830 to 1911. Before the 20th century, the Qing bureaucracy was one of the largest non-military organizations in the world in terms of numbers of regular employees. At any given time, approximately 13,000 officials held formal appointments. We present the basic features of its organizational demography using data on nearly all civil officials with formal appointments from 1830 to 1912. We make use of longitudinally linked records of officials in the China Government Employee Database – Jinshenlu (CGED-Q JSL) to reconstruct rates of exit from service, the career lengths of officials, and the number of years since first appointment for currently serving officials. While previous studies of the Qing have examined turnover in specific types of posts, they have not considered the dynamics of complete careers. We find that exit rates in the first year of service were high and then low and stable afterward. While most officials only served for a short time, currently serving officials were relatively experienced. We also show that rates of exit from service declined for much of the last half of the 19th century, and then increased in the first decade of the 20th century. Declining turnover in the last half of the 19th century would have reduced opportunities for degree holders seeking posts and for officials seeking promotion at a time when the number of holders of purchased degrees competing for posts was increasing. We also compare different categories of officials. The results not only illuminate basic features of the organizational demography of Qing officialdom, but also provide a baseline for interpreting results from case studies of specific groups of officials or specific time periods.
We introduce our approach to the nominative linkage of records of Qing officials who were included in the China Government Employee Datasets-Qing (CGED-Q) Jinshenlu (JSL) and Examination Records (ER). We constructed these datasets by transcription of quarterly rosters of civil and military officials produced by the government and by commercial presses, and records of examination degree holders. We assess each of the primary attributes available in the original sources in terms of their usefulness for disambiguation, focusing on their diversity and potential for inconsistent recording. For officials who were not affiliated with the Eight Banners, these primary attributes include surname, given name, and province and county of origin. For the small subset of officials who were affiliated with the Bannermen, we assess the available data separately. We also assess secondary attributes available in the data that may be useful for adjudicating candidate matches. We then describe the approach that we developed that addresses the issues we identified with the primary and secondary attributes. The issues we have identified and the approach that we have developed will be of interest to researchers engaged in similar efforts to construct and link datasets based on elite males in historical China.
The increased availability of quantitative historical datasets has provided new research opportunities for multiple disciplines in social science. In this article, we work closely with the constructors of a new dataset, CGED-Q (China Government Employee Database-Qing), that records the career trajectories of over 340,000 government officials in the Qing bureaucracy in China from 1760 to 1912. We use these data to study career mobility from a historical perspective and understand social mobility and inequality. However, existing statistical approaches are inadequate for analyzing career mobility in this historical dataset with its fine-grained attributes and long time span, since they are mostly hypothesis-driven and require substantial effort. We propose CareerLens , an interactive visual analytics system for assisting experts in exploring, understanding, and reasoning from historical career data. With CareerLens , experts examine mobility patterns in three levels-of-detail, namely, the macro-level providing a summary of overall mobility, the meso-level extracting latent group mobility patterns, and the micro-level revealing social relationships of individuals. We demonstrate the effectiveness and usability of CareerLens through two case studies and receive encouraging feedback from follow-up interviews with domain experts.
The Lee-Campbell Group has spent forty years constructing and analysing individual-level datasets based largely on Chinese archival materials to produce a scholarship of discovery. Initially, we constructed datasets for the study of Chinese demographic behaviour, households, kin networks, and socioeconomic attainment. More recently, we have turned to the construction and analysis of datasets on civil and military officials and other educational and professional elites, especially their social origins and their careers. As of July 2020, the datasets include nominative information on the behaviour and life outcomes of approximately two million individuals. This article is a retrospective on the construction of these datasets and a summary of their findings. This is the first time we have presented all our projects together and discussed them and the results of our analysis as a single integrated whole. We begin by summarizing the contents, organization, and notable features of each dataset and provide an integrated history of our data construction, starting in 1979 up to the present. We then summarize the most important results from our research on demographic behaviour, family, and household organization, and more recently inequality and stratification. We conclude with a reflection on the importance of data discovery, flexibility, interaction and collaboration to the success of our efforts.
This paper examines the consequences of political, economic and social change in mid-twentieth century China for patterns of assortative mating by both education and class. Traditionally in China, marriages were arranged by parents, and ideally matched families of similar socioeconomic status. However, the Marriage Law passed by the People’s Republic of China in 1950 promoted free choice and forbade arranged marriage and other interference by families in the marriage decisions of their children. Later, Land Reform, Collectivization and other movements had profound impacts on rural household organization and social relations. We investigate their effects on assortative mating by using novel linked administrative data compiled in rural Shanxi Province in North China in the mid-1960s. These data record the education and family class labels (jiating chushen) of spouses for 1459 couples in 30 villages. The class labels were assigned in the 1950s based on family landholding before the Land Reform and became hereditary. We find that class label had effects above and beyond those of education, suggesting that assortative mating studies that only consider education overlook an important dimension of social status in marriage patterns, and thereby overstate the overall permeability of boundaries between social groups. Furthermore, by comparing couples according to whether they married before or after 1949, we find that patterns of homogamy and hypergamy remained highly stable in the face of substantial social transformation after 1949.
AbstractWe introduce the China Government Employee Database—Qing (CGED-Q), a new resource for the quantitative study of Qing officialdom. The CGED-Q details the backgrounds, characteristics and careers of Qing officials who served between 1760 and 1912, with nearly complete coverage of officials serving after 1830. We draw information on careers from the Roster of Government Personnel (jinshenlu), which in each quarterly edition listed approximately 12,500 regular civil offices and their holders in the central government and the provinces. Information about backgrounds and characteristics comes from such linked sources as lists of exam degree holders. In some years, information on military officials is also available. As of February 2020, the CGED-Q comprises 3,817,219 records, of which 3,354,897 are civil offices and the remainder are military. In this article we review the progress and prospects of the project, introduce the sources, transcription procedures, and constructed variables, and provide examples of results to showcase its potential.

BACKGROUND There is considerable debate about whether Manchu and associated non-Han ethnic groups in China maintained a distinct identity in the late 19th century or were 'sinicized' and assimilated into the Han majority. OBJECTIVE We assess the boundaries between Han and non-Han groups by examining the determinants of interethnic marriage in China in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a setting where Han, Manchu, and other non-Han were free to intermarry, without being subject to institutional restrictions that limited such marriages elsewhere in China. METHODS We make use of the China Multi-Generational Panel Dataset, Shuangcheng (CMGPDSC), which consists of roughly 1.3 million observations of 107,890 Han, Manchu, Mongol, Xibo, and other individuals who lived in rural Northeast China between 1866 and 1913. We apply logistic regressions to examine the determinants of ethnic intermarriage and contingency table analysis to examine trends over time. RESULTS Marriage between Han and non-Han was not uncommon and increased over time. The chances of ethnic intermarriage were affected by village and family context by and individual characteristics. CONCLUSIONS In a setting where Han, Manchu, and other ethnicities were free to intermarry, they did so in large numbers, suggesting that by itself ethnicity was not a salient boundary when it came to marriage in Northeast China in the late 19th century. CONTRIBUTION This is one of the first quantitative studies of ethnic intermarriage in China before the 20th century and one of only a small number of such studies for historical non-Western populations.
metrical pattern of overlapping memberships in advantages and disadvantages, one that cannot be revealed by conventional quantitative methods (like correlation or multiple regression), but that this coincidence varies by race and gender. While whites are characterized by multiple advantages, the pattern of multiple disadvantages is more prevalent among blacks. This distinction is important because having multiple advantages shields people from poverty, while having multiple disadvantages does not necessarily lead to poverty (with one exception—for black women). Thus, variations in the combinations of advantages and disadvantages expose substantial racial and gender gaps in the casual recipes for avoiding poverty. Intersectional Inequality: Race, Class, Test Scores, and Poverty is not a methods book, per se, because the specifics of the methods are omitted and the interested researcher is directed to Ragin’s previous books. It does, however, provide a hands-on example of using an intersectional approach in the social sciences and shows the potential of this approach to provide a nuanced understanding of the underlying causes for socioeconomic inequality. This book is recommended reading for those who are looking for tools to study intersectionality and/or planning to use fuzzy-set analytic methods. For students who are getting familiar with the core literature on causal inference and matching techniques, Ragin and Fiss’s perspective could provide a different and interesting angle on the pitfalls of the conventional multiple regression method, that is, the inaptness of some of its restrictive assumptions for capturing the complexity of the social world.
In this study, we investigate the effect of early-life coresidence with paternal grandparents on male mortality risks in adulthood and older age in northeast China from 1789 to 1909. Despite growing interest in the influence of grandparents on child outcomes, few studies have examined the effect of coresidence with grandparents in early life on mortality in later life. We find that coresidence with paternal grandmothers in childhood is associated with higher mortality risks for males in adulthood. This may reflect the long-term effects of conflicts between mothers and their mothers-in-law. These results suggest that in extended families, patterns of coresidence in childhood may have long-term consequences for mortality, above and beyond the effects of common environmental and genetic factors, even when effects on childhood mortality are not readily apparent.
Despite long-standing recognition of the importance of family background in shaping life outcomes, only recently have empirical studies in demography, stratification, and other areas begun to consider the influence of kin other than parents. These new studies reflect the increasing availability of genealogical microdata that provide information about ancestors and kin over three or more generations. These data sets, including family genealogies, linked vital registration records, population registers, longitudinal surveys, and other sources, are valuable resources for social research on family, population, and stratification in a multigenerational perspective. This article reviews relevant recent studies, introduces and presents examples of the most important sources of genealogical microdata, identifies key methodological issues in the construction and analysis of genealogical data, and suggests directions for future research.
