AIM: To analyze the relationship of overweight and obesity with fatty liver, and explore the interaction of obesity and other risk factors in the incidence of fatty liver. METHODS: Totally 2 458 community residents were enrolled by means of stratified multistage cluster sampling between September 2002 and December 2004. According to 1:1 matched case-control study, this investigation adopted 425 cases diagnosed as fatty liver by B ultrasound and 425 controls matched by sex, age and inhabitancy. They aging over 18 years all received the personal interview and physical examination. RESULTS: All 850 subjects were involved in the result analysis. The risks of the incidence of fatty liver in overweight and obesity group were significantly higher than that in normal body weight group (OR =4.07, OR 95%CI =2.99-5.54). The odds ratio (OR ) increased with the body mass index, showing the clear dose-response relationship (Tendency χ 2=104.25, P < 0.000 1). The disease risk of abdominal obesity persons with abnormal waist hip ratio was higher than those without abdominal obesity. Interaction analysis suggested that obesity plus drinking habit could significantly increase the risk of fatty liver. Its relative excess risk of interaction was 8.16, and its attributable proportion of interaction was 0.576 7. CONCLUSION: There is a close relationship of overweight and obesity with the incidence of fatty liver, and a significantly synergistic interaction effect between obesity and drinking habit in developing fatty liver. The measurement to control the body weight is essential for decreasing the prevalence rate of fatty liver.
Objective:To investigate the effects of common inhibitors of the antioxidation system and vitamin C on the measurement of hemoglobin (Hb).Methods:Hemolyzed rabbit red blood cell was used as the sample. The interferences of common inhibitors of the antioxidation system on assay of Hb by its absorbance at 540nm,alkalinized Hb by absorbance at 575nm,the azide-Hb complex by absorbance at 542nm were compared. Results:Vitamin C and the inhibitors of superoxide dismutase, catalase exhibited larger interferences with direct assay of Hb by absorbance at 540 nm and the assay of azide-Hb,and inhibitor of GSH and GSH peroxidase showed smaller effects. The assay of alkalinized Hb exhibited the strongest resistance to all these chemicals. Conclusion:The assay of alkalinized Hb shows the strongest resistance to common chemicals used to investigate the mechanism of peroxidative damage and can be applicable to the study of the mechanism of vitamin C-induced hemolysis.
