Due to the influence imposed by religions,customs and geographic environment under English culture and Chinese culture respectively,the corresponding animal words of the two cultures have different national cultural connotations.This paper firstly illustrates the five patterns towards the connotations of animal words with some examples,secondly makes a contrast concerning the distinct meaning of that from the pespective of Metaphor and Symbolism,finally indicates the various characteristics and discrepancies between the two cultures,hence to promote their cross-cultural language study and conmmunication.
